What drives you to buy a new fragrance?

As an avid shopper I spend a lot of time down the local high street, browsing, checking out new releases, looking for bargains.  And yet the one place I seldom loiter is the fragrance section of my local Farmers, department store or pharmacies.

Other than my signature scent Dolce Vita, all of the fragrances I own, I've been given.  I wear them, some I really like, and yet, when it comes to shelling out my own money, I stick with what I love.  Which means I only buy fragrance when it's on special.  Because Christian Dior is a lot of things, but wallet-friendly is not one of them.

Knowing I have two back ups in my sock drawer, last night I decided I was in the mood to purchase a different fragrance, so I sat down and read reviews.  I started with other Christian Dior fragrances, because, well, stick with what you know right?  An hour later and I'm considering buying Taylor Swift.  (A part of me died inside admitting that.  Lets not dwell on it).  I now have a short list I'll head into store with, and after that...I have no idea what will happen.  I'll probably come out with a third bottle of Dolce Vita, because true love lasts a lifetime.

Imagine we gave you a blank cheque and told you you had to buy a completely new fragrance.  Something you'd never owned before.  What would drive you to your choice?  Do you see an advert and have to try it?  Or maybe you catch a whiff on a friend and based on that you seek it out?  Do you read reviews and think 'that sounds like me?'.  Or are you a fragrance browser, lingering around the testers in the department store?

Is it the price that motivates you?  Do you have a top price that you won't go over, or for your ultimate gotta-have-it scent will your budget flex?

And - have you ever bought a fragrance blind?  (Let's skip right on passed that mix-metaphor)

Share your fragrance shopping habits with us - we'd love to read about them!

I don’t tend to wear perfumes at work.. but i love soft but sweet subtle fragrances. I love fruity floral notes especially with a hint of raspberry.. blackberry... musk.. or vanilla. The type of perfume i would love to wear would have light and fruity scents such as the light musky raspberry scent of the Coach’s New York Eau De Parfum. I don’t tend to wear very strong perfumes.. but i do get attracted to the sweet caramelly or creamy vanillary smells such as Juicey Coutures Viva la juicey Sucre... Everytime i go past a tester bottle.. i would take home the testing paper with a spray of ‘Sucre’.

Normally when there's a sale! I'm a huge perfume gal. Long lasting, slightly musky is what makes me go for it,

I normally only have two perfumes on the go at a time. One for day and one for night. Once I get close to the end of a bottle I will head out to find a new one. Normally I start smelling perfumes that are in the same fragrance family as the one I am just about to finish and then go from there. I am currently in love with Giorgio Armani Si.

I am one that drinks with the eyes first, if the bottle is stunning I generally want to smell it AND I will admit that I have in the past purchased a bottle of purfume based soley on the bottle and later learnt to love it. However the main driving force for me is the smell, I spend a lot of time in the fragrance department (im sure the women hate me there) testing anything I have seen released lately, but it has to smell amazing on me to buy it & once I smell something I love I obsess about it until I own it. I also like to read reviews (I wont promote another website here but I use one for the sole purpose of talking about and comparing perfumes) to help me decide what I want to get my hands on. My collection is a tad out of control, but I am smart about how I buy, the small bottles (unless the bigger looks more amaxing -hello DOT) sales or b-day/xmas wish lists.

I would most likely go into a department store and try a few fragrances first - I don't really like the thought of blind buying (I'm a wimp). However my Mum recently gave me a bottle of Elizabeth Arden Mediterranean and I thought that I wouldn't like it (haven't liked any EA perfumes in the past), but I actually love it!! So you never know

The scent has to entice me and I like something long wearing.

Ooh, this is a good one. I only buy fragrance that I love the scent off. When purchasing, I will smell a couple of different ones and compare it to my tried and true fav. So far my fav always wins out.

It use to be the bottle to start with if it didn't stand out I wouldn't really test it. Now I just have a couple that I won't change from too in love so I always smell the same. God forbid they discontinue them

In a heartbeat I would buy the Estee Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia - it's a whooping $350 and I've admired it from afar (and will continue to do so ha!).

My fragrance purchases are based on the notes I love (tuberose, bergamot, wood musk and amber), reviews and what I detect on others.

Adverts have never convinced me to buy a perfume except be made aware of it. I've seen the ads all over the place for YSL Black Opium but it was the BR reviews that convinced me to buy it. It's absolutely divine!!!

I've blind purchased once and I'll never listen to the adventurous side of me when it comes to perfume again. I'm very lucky that a lot of the gifts I receive are perfumes so I don't tend to shop for them. If it's a perfume I love then my budget will flex but for the past 3 years I haven't been able to justify $350.

I find perfume is quite overpowering and makes me sneeze lol so I usually wear Kama love oil. I love it! If I was to venture into the perfume world it would be a Dior Poison. Not sure which one as I have not smelt them all....but perhaps hypnotic :-)

I bought Gucci Rush because I had smelled it waft from a work mate so I ditched my usual Chanel 5 and love it totally.

5th June, 2017

I definitely need to smell it in-store on myself though I do take an initial whiff and see if I like it, I sniff a few and then try out the one that I want to the most. Spray it on and wait a few hours and then if I can still smell it hours later and it smells nice than I'll consider it. I do that test with some fragrances and then wait for the one that I like the most to be on sale. I do have my signature default fragrance that I love so if I run low on that one then the next sale I'll repurchase. If I was given the opportunity to buy any fragrance without worrying about the cost then I'd go for a YSL fragrance like Manifesto (the purple bottle, loved it, not the price though).

I love musky, sweet, fragrances so that's what I'm always looking for.

5th June, 2017

I've never been a huge perfume person mainly because of the price tag that comes attached to them, though i have a couple that i am definitely considering making the investment in when my current runs out, if anyone has any affordable recommendations i'd definitely be open to them!! I love anything fruity and flowery.

I struggle to commit. I simply cannot bring myself to like a celebrity fragrance... although fashion designer yes. I too love Dolce Vita, haven't owned one for some time though. The last spray fragrance I had bought for me was Vera Wang, it was lovely too. We chose it together, I find fragrances can smell so different once they hit your skin.

I'm going to have to note those down so I can smell them - they must be divine to be that expensive!!
