Is the cost of living impacting your beauty spending?

Is the cost of living impacting your beauty spending?

There is no getting away from it, and It’s a hot (hot!) topic at the moment. The price of just about everything, mortgage payments, rent, groceries, insurance, and your morning coffee, is only going one way, skyward!

But, how does this translate to our beauty spending? For many, it means making strategic choices at the grocery store, perhaps opting for promotions on essential items like body wash and deodorant, even if it means switching from our favourite brands to an untried one. The allure of salon-quality products may lose its lustre as more people turn to budget-friendly options found on supermarket shelves.

What’s your take on this?  Do you find yourself switching brands on essential items like Body Wash and Deodorant in the grocery shop to buy products that are on promotion? Changing from salon to supermarket Shampoo? Moving supermarkets from a full-service offering like New World to a discounter like Pak n Save?

When it comes to those coveted "non-essential" beauty treats, such as that irresistible Tom Ford lipstick or the latest Mecca Beauty Loop perk, the decision-making process becomes more nuanced. Are you still indulging in these splurges, or are you thinking twice in the face of tightening budgets?

It's a balancing act between satisfying our beauty cravings and being financially prudent in uncertain times. For some, the allure of that perfect shade or exclusive offer remains irresistible, leading them to maintain their beauty spending habits and save money elsewhere. For others, at this time it might be more serious…food or foundation.

Tell us your thoughts below on if your beauty spending habits have changed over the last 6 months and how, and you’ll go in the draw to win one of two $300.00 Beauty Packs each worth $587.00.**

I buy similar items to the past that are readily available.. generally at farmers. I’m a sucker for a new item and generally in the price of olay, garnier, trilogy, antipodes… love Estée Lauder but out of my budget. Intend to stick to brand I know and have used before having sensitive skin. I wouldn’t say I’m spending less but I m probably spending similar amounts as I don’t buy when I have an item already and I just don’t buy a lot of stuff that will sit in my draw. Makeup wise I spend more on less products, but I know I will use those products, versus owning 50 eyeshadows.

My spending habits for beauty items has definitely decreased over the past few years. We are on 1 wage with an 11 year old daughter. I really have to search out the bargains

I've definitely changed my impulse buying habits. I'm trying to use up everything I have before buying something new, and I'm finding I'm using products even after I know that my skin is not happy with them because I don't want to feel like I've wasted the money.

The cost of living has definitely impacted how much I spend on beauty items. I have had to cut back on items, if a product has run out and it’s not an absolute ‘essential’ then I won’t repurchase. My essential beauty products and routine have minimised as there’s too many more important costs that my money needs to go towards.

The cost of living has definitely made me change to the cheapest products. Which is a bummer but we can make it work

Over the past six months I have been even more conscious of looking our for my favourite items on special and not buying extras just because they look appealing.

11th March, 2024

In the past six months, I've had to review my beauty spending habits due to the increasing cost of living. While maintaining a skincare routine is essential for me, I've found ways to adapt without compromising quality or breaking the bank.

Essential Products:

Cleanser: Opt for a gentle, affordable option like Cetaphil or Cerave. Moisturizer: Look for a hydrating lotion or cream that suits your skin type, such as Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream. Sunscreen: Protecting my skin is non-negotiable, so I invest in a reliable sunscreen like La Roche-Posay Anthelios. Lip balm: Keep lips moisturized with an affordable option like Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm.

Quality Products on a Budget:

Drugstore Brands: Many drugstore brands offer high-quality products at a fraction of the cost. Look for trusted brands like Maybelline, L'Oréal, and NYX. Multi-purpose Products: Choose items that serve multiple purposes, such as tinted moisturizers with SPF or cream blushes that double as lip color. DIY Treatments: Explore DIY options for masks and treatments using natural ingredients like honey, yogurt, and oats.

Saving Money:

Sales and Coupons: Keep an eye out for sales and coupons from both drugstore and higher-end brands. Loyalty Programs: Take advantage of loyalty programs and rewards offered by beauty retailers. Sample Sizes: Purchase sample sizes or travel-sized products to test before committing to full-sized versions.

Tips and Hacks:

Use Less: You often need less product than you think. Start with a small amount and build up if necessary. Proper Storage: Store products properly to prolong their shelf life and prevent wastage. DIY Tools: Get creative with DIY tools, like using a spoon to depot products from tubes to get every last drop. By prioritizing essential products, finding budget-friendly options without compromising quality, and implementing money-saving tips and hacks, I've managed to maintain my beauty routine while adjusting to the current economic climate.

Amidst the escalating cost of living in the past six months, I've found it imperative to reevaluate my beauty spending habits. To adapt, I've implemented a more strategic approach to budgeting and saving money while still prioritizing self-care. I've become more mindful of my purchases, focusing on essential items like skincare basics and multi-purpose makeup products that offer quality at a reasonable price. I've also started exploring alternative options such as DIY beauty treatments and homemade skincare remedies, which not only save money but also allow for a more personalized approach to my beauty routine. Additionally, I've taken advantage of sales, discounts, and loyalty programs to stretch my budget further without sacrificing quality. By being proactive and resourceful, I've found ways to maintain my self-care routine while effectively managing the impact of the high cost of living on my beauty spending.

Over the past six months, I've had to reassess my beauty spending due to the rising cost of living. Essential products like a gentle facial cleanser, moisturizer with SPF, and a multipurpose tinted lip balm remain non-negotiable. To maintain quality without overspending, I've opted for affordable yet effective options like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30, and Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm. While it's been a challenge to adjust, prioritizing these essentials while being mindful of cost has allowed me to maintain a semblance of my skincare routine without breaking the bank.
