What do you use under your foundation?

No two ladies are the same when it comes to makeup.  Products that are perfect for you don't always work on a friend and sometimes you'll try a much raved about product only to be left underwhelmed.  Then there's the seemingly endless number of ways to apply your makeup and infinite combinations in which to use your products.

Since the whole 'prepping your skin' revolution took off it became clear that there were several different techniques for creating the perfect canvas for foundation. The most common options are;

  • Primer - it's a crime not to prime!  Primer lovers like the smooth and even canvas created by skin primers, that are created to create the perfect surface for foundation to adhere to.
  • BB Cream - for some they offer the perfect level of coverage; for others, BB Creams create the base for foundation.
  • Moisturiser - lots of people do nothing except moisturise before applying foundation.  It can help prevent flaking.
  • Blur Cream - designed to be used solo or under foundation, blur creams give an airbrush effect, blurring fine lines and blemishes.
  • Powder - powder? Under foundation?  Yes some ladies prefer to use powder first and then apply their foundation!

So what do you use under your foundation?  Are you a primer convert or do you use something else?  Why do you prefer your go-to method over other options and could you be swayed to change?

I use either a primer or a bb cream depends on how my skin is feeling, dry then maybe a bb cream, fine or a bit oily then a primer don't know why but this is what works for me :)

I've never used a primer of any sort. I just moisture and apply BB cream under my foundation

I use bb cream I like having a bit of extra coverage

I normally just use moisturiser as I have really dry skin.. haven't wanted to fork out and buy a primer in the past as I don't wear foundation that much. But when I do I have used friends MAC strobe cream and also the smashbox primer before and both are amazing. Probably should read the primer reviews on here and purchase one me thinks!

I tend to use my elf mineral primer in tone adjusting green, however I found out this morning it's almost empty so I'm in need of a new one! It's the only downside to the primer, you don't know you're almost out until it's too late!

I use moisturiser usually.

I've only ever tried one primer, the elf primer, and I don't really like it so I usually just use moisturiser/sunscreen then bb cream or foundation. I haven't heard of putting bb cream UNDER foundation, I suppose it would give a lot of coverage on bad skin days :)

I was told to use primer and I do what I am told (well when it comes to makeup)

Moisturize then prime! I feel like I've missed a crucial step when I forget primer, I'm convinced it makes my foundation glide on just that much smoother - constantly on the hunt for the perfect primer!

Don't think I could ever use a BB cream under foundation, that seems like just too much!

I've heard of the powder before foundation trick, have yet to give that one a try!

I just use powder and that's it! I would love to try a primer

I've been doing the moisturizer, then primer, then blur cream, then foundation. I stopped doing the primer when I got Porefessional, but I think I'm going to see what it's like to re-introduce primer to the equation.

I always apply moisturiser, because otherwise my dry skin does not thank me! But in the last few months I've been using primer also, which has made such a difference to how my makeup lasts. Definitely a primer convert!

2nd September, 2014

I just use moisturiser, not even a tinted one. It would be good if my foundation lasted a lot longer during the day
