Would you like a peel with that?
Oh yes, peels are now considered a staple on the salon treatment menu. For some of us they're a treat, something we do before a big do, or going away on our holiday. For others they're a regular appointment - an essential to their skin care routine.
If you're wondering what exactly a peel is, well, there are different kinds of peels, with varying degrees of strength. But in a nutshell, a peel removes the outermost layer of skin cells, revealing fresh, new skin below. Peels are very effective in treating a large range of skin concerns. They can help reverse, reduce and even remove the signs of aging, acne, scars and sun damage. It's pretty much a given that post-peel your skin will be brighter, with a much more even tone.
It's important to realise that a peel alone won't save your skin, it provides a fresh starting point for tackling ongoing issues. Regular peels and a well considered skin care routine will keep your skin healthy and prevent your skin problems slipping further back.
Whether you peel at home, or in the salon some things do not change.
- There may be tingling. Peels are essentially a 'controlled wound' which means there may be a slightly hot or burned feeling. This is normal.
- The skin will be shiny, tight and pink, maybe even red after a peel. There may even be...peeling.
The most important tip to remember!
You must (absolutely, 100% MUST) use sunscreen whenever you go out. You've just revealed a layer of fresh skin - it is super sensitive to the sun, and if you don't protect it, it will burn easily. If you can't commit to daily sunscreen, seriously reconsider peeling!
