1 Thing You MUST Do If You're Peeling...at the salon or HOME

Would you like a peel with that?

Oh yes, peels are now considered a staple on the salon treatment menu.  For some of us they're a treat, something we do before a big do, or going away on our holiday.  For others they're a regular appointment - an essential to their skin care routine.

If you're wondering what exactly a peel is, well, there are different kinds of peels, with varying degrees of strength.  But in a nutshell, a peel removes the outermost layer of skin cells, revealing fresh, new skin below.  Peels are very effective in treating a large range of skin concerns.  They can help reverse, reduce and even remove the signs of aging, acne, scars and sun damage.  It's pretty much a given that post-peel your skin will be brighter, with a much more even tone.

It's important to realise that a peel alone won't save your skin, it provides a fresh starting point for tackling ongoing issues.  Regular peels and a well considered skin care routine will keep your skin healthy and prevent your skin problems slipping further back.

Whether you peel at home, or in the salon some things do not change.

  • There may be tingling.  Peels are essentially a 'controlled wound' which means there may be a slightly hot or burned feeling.  This is normal.
  • The skin will be shiny, tight and pink, maybe even red after a peel.  There may even be...peeling.

The most important tip to remember!

Check out this one - the number 1 sunscreen in NZ!

You must (absolutely, 100% MUST) use sunscreen whenever you go out.  You've just revealed a layer of fresh skin - it is super sensitive to the sun, and if you don't protect it, it will burn easily.  If you can't commit to daily sunscreen, seriously reconsider peeling!

So tell us - are you a regular peeler?  Do you go to the salon and if so how often?  Or have you never peeled?  What's stopping you?  Is it the expensive salon trips, or do you just not think they'd work for you?  Would you consider peeling at home?  Or maybe you have peeled at home?

I don’t go to salons to get peels, but I have toners and creams with chemical exfoliants in them like glycolic acid, salicylic acid and lactic acid and I noticed my face gets red fast outside, so I started using a higher spf sunscreen and it helps a lot.

I should treat myself but I never have facials/peels.

I tend to prefer a glycolic toner to exfoliate rather than peels now. I’m fairly pale so sunscreen is a must in my routine anyway - but a must with lots of acid treatments

I have never had a facial or facial peel due to facial burn scarring (and don't like people touching my face!), I would try it at home though!!

I’m happy to say I’m a scaredy-cat. You won’t see me peeling at a salon lol

Not keen on this, prefer scrubs and masks.

Hmmm not keen on the idea I must say. I like a gentle exfoliation but that's enough for me

No I'm not a regular peeler but I think I should get a product to be!

Haven't tried a peel but not keen on the idea.

I've used a perl from The Ordinary......I didn't love it. Not something I would do again.

I haven't tried a peel. My beauty therapist told me not to.
