If you don’t already know me (I’m off to a good start right!) I’ve build a bit of a reputation for myself as the bold lipstick girl. I’m a long time Beauty Review member, blogger, avid instagrammer and I was on TV once so, you know, kind of not a big deal at all. While bold lippy may seem like it’s came inbuilt in my DNA it hasn’t always been this way.
A few years ago I owned six lip products in total. That was a couple of lip balms, a few glosses and one lipstick. Now I have upward of 70 lipsticks and I am obsessed with them and at this point, addicted for life. I could probably never buy another lipstick in my life, wear it everyday and never run out. My question is though it it really worth the risk? No, no it’s not. It was a bit of a leap to go from wearing my one netural pink Avon lippy to the shades I wear today so I thought I’d give you some tips on how to make the leap to the bold side.
1. Buy a shade you LOVE
I don’t mean go and just pick a colour, pick the one that jumps out at you, the one that is abso-freaking-lutely amazing that you’re not sure if you’d ever want to put it on (from fear of messing with perfection. Of a brand new lippy) You need to be a bit scared by the shade but be so in love with it that you can’t imagine living life without wearing it. For me this shade was MAC Girl About Town. It’s a beautiful fuschia pink and it’s bright!
2. Wear it around the house to begin with
Now, the first time you put a super bold shade of lippy on you will feel like a bit of a clown. You will get a fright every time you look in the mirror and you will realise how bad your lipstick application technique has been in the past. The flipside of this is you will get used to it quickly and you will find your lipstick application technique will dramatically improve over the next few applications.
3. Now wear it out of the house
Gasp! This is the big moment. You should be comfortable enough seeing your reflection in bold lippy but this is still going to be a bit nervewracking. You are going to get people’s attention (no you don’t have something on your head) and people who know you well are going to comment. Mentally prepare yourself for this and I promise you will get through the day. From this point it’s onwards and upwards!
I used to only wear my bold shades about once a week when I first started out with bold lippy. It takes a bit of getting used to in terms of not touching your lips and getting used to eating and drinking in a way that preserves the lippy as much as possible. You will probably touch it up more often that you would a nude or neutral colour because with a bold it’s really obvious when it’s not perfect.
For me now my bold lipstick is just a way of life. If I want to feel particularly confident or assured or need a bit of a boost in the morning on goes some bold lippy. Bold lipstick is my armour that turns me into a girlboss and it instantly helps me feel more confident. One of my life mottos is, “Fake it till you make it,” and somehow in my mind this directly relates to the confidence you portray when you first start wearing bold lippy in public.
You will get awesome comments from other ladies while you’re out. I like to think that really it’s my confidence and self expression through the bold colours I choose that’s being acknowledged when I get those comments. I think there’s lots of laides out there who want to wear bold lippy but think they would feel like a bit of a dork in it. If you want into this club step up and join in the fun!
So have I convinced you? Are you going to go and find that bold shade that screams your name and convert yourself from nudes and neutrals only? Do it and then post a photo on the BR photo wall so I can admire the beautiful shade you pick!
