Everything You Need to Know About Lash Serums!

Eyelash serums.  You must have heard of them - those nightly treatments that promise longer, thicker, fuller lashes.

We're constantly reading fantastic reviews and hearing amazing success stories about these so-called miracle products, but we were a little bit mystified with just how they achieve these incredible results.  It's time to spill the magician's secret with the help of BR's Beautician Zoe.

How did it start?

Like so many amazing things, lash serums were developed by accident; as a side effect to glaucoma treatments.  Glaucoma patients using eyes drops containing synthetic prostaglandins noticed their eyelashes growing faster and longer.  And naturally, as with anything coveted, beauty companies began to create and test formulas for use on the lash line.

Lash serums are can be used in two main ways:

  1. To amplify the growth of your lashes
  2. To condition your lashes so they grow stronger and last longer through their cycle.

Most lash treatments and serums come in a three month supply which is the average growth cycle of eyelashes.

What are my options?

Prostaglandin based serums provide the most dramatic results, with the ingredient stimulating hair follicles into growing faster, lengthening the growth period of the eyelash cycle.  Some brands are only available on prescription, but there are also many over the counter products to choose from.  Prices do vary but you can expect to spend at least $100-140 for around a three month supply.

Keratin lash treatments strengthen your existing lashes.  Now while keratin doesn't have a direct impact on the growth of your eyelashes, it can help condition your lashes, resulting in less breakage as they withstand the daily rigours of mascara, eyelash curlers and makeup removers.

Biotin Arginine lash serums are packed full of essential vitamins (like Biotin) and Amino Acids (Like Arginine).  The formulas deliver these key growth ingredients at a cellular level.  Again they won't directly cause your lashes to grow, but they do help you to grow stronger, thicker lashes, which in turn will last longer through the growth cycle.

Natural Oil lash treatments work in the same way as oil treatments for your hair.  The natural oils help retain moisture within the eyelash shaft, giving you conditioned healthy lashes.  These will be the cheapest option, but its worth remembering these will not amplify the growth of your lashes and results are anecdotal.

Are there any side effects?

With synthetic prostaglandins some glaucoma patients noticed their irises darkening (if they were light to begin with) but as lash serums are applied to the lash line, not the eye itself this shouldn't be a concern.  Pigmentation changes along the lash line have been noted, however these aren't going to be so dramatic that they'd be noticeable under eye makeup.

A few glaucoma patients also suffered from swelling of the retina which blurs vision, but as no eyelash serum should be applied to your eye it shouldn't be an issue.  If it is sheer growth/length you are after then the best results seem to come from products containing prostaglandin.  However conditioning treatments that do not have a direct affect on the rate of growth are producing impressive results, so if you're concerned about side effects there are many other options available.

Obviously the eyes are a very sensitive area, and while these products have been designed with the eye area in mind, you'll want to stick very closely to applying as directed.

How long does a serum last?

Well it depends, but usually 2ml is about 3 months daily use.  Opened shelf life is around 6-9 months, BUT remember, this is a product similar to mascara, every use pumps air into the bottle, and the dark, moist inside is prime bacteria land, so we'd recommend committing to daily use and changing your product every 3 months.

It's also worth noting that cheap serum deals on daily deal sites etc, might contain stock passed it's 'best before' and although technically safe to use, the active ingredients in a lash serum are only good for 2 years (unopened) post manufacture date, if stored correctly.

Is there anything else I need to know?

The cycle of your eyelashes is on average 3 months.  This means whatever you do to them, be it stimulate the follicle or strengthen the strand, the effects will only last as long as your eye lash cycle.

No matter how miraculous the results you may have read about are, you're only going to achieve maximum results from your lash serum if you are judicious about using them.  You need to be both consistent and persistent in applying the serum to your lash line every evening.  Only when the serum is regularly stimulating the hair follicles will it begin to enact its lengthening and strengthening properties.

I have tried one, and got really long lashes. I ended up being irritated with the length of them as they would tickle above my eye, and hit my reading glasses. I prefer to stick with mascara & use falsies on a special night.

I have heard of lash serums and now other people to rave about them but I don't have a problem with my lashes, I like them just the way they are. However if something were to change with my lashes, I would consider looking into it and purchasing.

I have never tried a lash serum and can't say that I ever would unless I had something bad happen to my lashes. I have quiet nice lashes naturally and for the cost I can't say that its a product that I need. I can see how it might appeal to some people though.

I've used Flash and it really helped and it's one of the cheaper ones. I wouldn't pay big bucks for a product that is essentially a lash conditioner because then you might as well just apply a little rosehip or jojoba or any oil blend to your lashes that is non-irritating for eyes.

I use Li Lash and love my long lashes now. The only downfall of using these products is once you start using these serums, you can't stop as your lashes go back in size without the serum. So for me its an ongoing thing now. I don't have to always use a mascara with my long lashes which is am added bonus. I have had no issues with this product, happy customer.

The one thing that's keeping me back from splurgin out on a lash serum is the fact that once this cycle of lashes fall out, your lashes are back to normal. I've seen reviews where people got super long lashes but once they stopped using it, it just went back to how they normally were.

I haven't ever heard of this but I have very thin eyelashes so could be a really good product for me to look at. Who would have quessed?

15th August, 2017

I've never tried a lash serum because the price is too high. I'd rather try a lash lift.

I have to hold my hand up to trying this in the past. As a contact lense (rigid) wearer, my lashes get a bit of stick from the solution and should I ever get something behind them, an awful lot of rubbing. (A tiny speck of dust can feel like a rock on a windy day!) when I first used it I found it ok, but over the period of a fortnight noticed that the synthetic base started to build up on my lashes (as noted above, it was designed to do this to strengthen) but, that was the start of the end. The build up irritated my contacts and eyes - I have found this in the past with some mascaras that have fibres to dramatically lengthen too. I ended up using the rest of the serum on my eyebrows to help keep the shape, so it wasn't a complete loss.

I have no issues with my lashes so would not use this but would be keen to see before and after pics if someone used it

I'd love to try a good lash serum. The price can be a little scary though.

14th August, 2017

I have not tried them as I don't really know how they or if they worked this is an interesting read makes me want to try them more but where to start

That's interesting. I had no idea the serums were supposed to create a build up. I thought it was just supposed to be absorbed into the hair follicles at the base and then the rest gets rinsed/washed off the next day when you wash your face.

Yes, lash lifts are great and been around for eeeeeever! Its like a wee perm (but not the frizzy, curly kind lol) and gives a beautiful curl to the lash!

I agree so you need to pick one that you can afford to repurchase every three months. If you can afford to save up a bit, I'd recommend Flash it's one of the cheaper ones but it's one that works really well and isn't some overhyped lash conditioner.

I saw some fLASH on trademe at a discounted price but even then makes me wonder is $50 bucks every three months realy worth it? If I did ever try lash serums though it would be Flash, all the other ones are skyscraper prices.

Oh I so agree on the price factor...I guess if you can keep it up AND if your lashes are in good health already then its perfect.
