I’ll Tell Ya What I Want! What I Really Really Want!’ Spice Girls – Wannabe
Ah the 1990s. I remember you well. A mash up of grunge and pop, bodysuits and A-line dresses, overalls and checked shirts. Not to mention boppy-poppy high ponytails and grungy straggly long hair. You were a good time. You were also a scary time, with loads of beauty and fashion trends this admitted offender would gladly never see repeated. But you had your moments. Oh yes you did, and those moments are coming back!

Deep, dark and totally divine, berry lips are back! (Although, really, did this gorgeous look ever totally go away?) Drew, Jen An and Liv Tyler were seen rocking the look back in the day and now it’s looking just as scrumptious on the faces on today’s hottest songstresses and actresses, including Riri, Selena, Lily and so many more. If you’re looking to update your look this is an easy way to do it.
It’s not just berry lips that were big in the 90s, nude lips was hot too and we’re seeing it everywhere, with K-Jen being the number one proponent of the look. Easy to wear, with a shade to suit everyone (check out this tutorial from Wayne Goss to find out which nude shade would suit you), nude lips can be fresh and fantastic or bold and beautiful.
When Benefit said they were coming out with a range of coloured mascaras I had a totally ‘Really? Truly? Are you for real?’ reaction. Part of me had relegated coloured mascara to the ‘never again’ corner of my brain where piles of glitter gel roller ball contraptions sit. Then I saw this photo:
of Beauty Review member Sophie and totally changed my mind. (Seriously, is there a look that woman can’t rock!?*). While black mascara will always have a place, if you’re wanting to make your peepers pop coloured mascara is a fun way to do it. Almay’s Intense iColour Volumising Mascara is a great place to start with blue, green, brown and hazel. Want to amplify the colour? Check out Avon’s SuperShock Brights Mascara.
The 90s glittery eyeshadows are back, but now they’re super sophisticated while still being fun. Metallic eyeshadows add intense colour and tonnes of drama. We’re huge fans of the Australis Metallix range, with the Lana Del Grey being a cool updated mish-mash of blue shadow, which was so hot way back when and the glittery trend. Want the look but a toned-down version? Check out Stila’s Jewel Eyeshadow range. This is one trend we’re loving playing with and we hope it sticks around for a while.

Remember how sophisticated a French manicure seemed? Those stunning nude nails with elegant white tips. Then all of a sudden it became a beauty oh-no. Well, it’s an oh-yes again! Although it’s a little more fun, with different colours and textures coming into play. Even the basic French manicure is fun with the tips being wavy or angled. The only limitation on this look is your imagination.
It’s not only beauty that’s seeing the best of the 90s, fashion is too. From belly baring crop tops to those fab checked flannelette shirts, Dr. Martens to ripped jeans, we’ve even spied chokers and peace signs popping up. It’s a stylista’s dream!
So are you or will you be rocking some of these fashion flashbacks from the 90s? Which looks are your favourite? Which aren’t? And is there a particular look or style you’re hoping will make a comeback? Chat away…
*Answer: No. She rocks them all.
I'am absolutely blown away by this article!
The 90's was such a cool decade! I love seeing how all trends come back changing or developing the same idea over and over aging.
Nothing is more nineties than a good matte nude lip.
