Straightened your smile? 5 tips for retaining your Retainer!

3 March, 2024 - 01:16pm by - BR-Queenie | 6 Comments

Remember that feeling when you got your braces off or were handed your new retainer? That "hello beautiful smile" moment? But let's face it, maintaining that gleaming retainer takes some TLC, or you’ll be back at the Orthandondist handing over the readies sooner than you can say ‘retainer;!

Here are 5 tips to look after that expensive investment be it yours or someone else in your family.

1. Regular Cleaning Routine

Make cleaning your retainer a part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild soap or retainer cleaner to scrub away plaque and bacteria gently. Avoid harsh cleaners or hot water that could damage the retainer.

2. Keep It Hydrated, Not Dry

Retainers can warp or crack if they dry out. When you're not wearing your retainer, store it in a designated case filled with a bit of water or a recommended soaking solution. Keeping it hydrated prevents it from becoming brittle and maintains its shape.

3. Hands Off!

Avoid handling your retainer too much. Touching it frequently with dirty hands can transfer bacteria and germs. Before handling your retainer, make sure your hands are clean to avoid introducing unwanted bacteria.

4. Explore Modern Cleaning Techniques

There are a lot of modern retainer cleaning solutions to keep the grim away, now available.

Sonic cleaners use high-frequency vibrations to reach into every nook and cranny, banishing bacteria and buildup. The best part? It’s super gentle, so no worries about damaging your retainer. One of the Beauty Crew has this Zima Dental Pod and swears by it. At around $150 it doesn’t come cheap, but then again neither does a new retainer.

5. Avoid Heat and Harsh Chemicals

Retainers are sensitive to heat and chemicals. Avoid leaving your retainer in hot places like your car or near heated surfaces, as this can cause warping. Additionally, steer clear of harsh chemicals like bleach or alcohol-based mouthwashes, which can damage the retainer's material.

Your retainer isn’t just an accessory; it’s an investment in your smile. Taking care of it ensures not only its longevity but also the effectiveness of your orthodontic treatment. A well-maintained retainer means a healthy, aligned smile for years to come.

Your retainer deserves as much care as your teeth do. By following these simple yet crucial tips, you're not just protecting your retainer investment, but you're also safeguarding your oral health. Remember, a little effort in maintaining your retainer goes a long way in preserving that radiant smile you've worked so hard to achieve!

I'm still wearing my aligners, but once I am at the point where I have my retainers I might investigate in something convenient like a sonic cleaner as I will have to wear them for a few more decades...

I didn't have braces but had to pay for my son's (ouch). His teeth moved after a few years and he needed a night brace. The care tips are great. Braces/retainers certainly are an investment.
