Makeup Names – The Lip Curling

By BR Kellie

I went years without bothering with lippy, partly because I was a bit lazy but mainly because I was quite happy with the natural dusky pink tinted colour of my lips (vain!!! Hahahaha), but something has changed since age has marched over my body, the old lippyloos seem to have faded in colour and I find myself reaching for lippy on most days to give them a boost.

Revlon’s Rosy Nude, L’Oreal’s Rose Crème, e.l.f.’s Rich Red. I love the names of these lippies because I know what I’m getting when I reach for them. However, there are some lipstick names that just leave me going ‘huh’ and wondering how the heck the names came about.

Take for instance, MAC Twig. This colour is my absolute favourite lipstick colour in the whole entire world (and let’s not talk about how distraught I am after having lost it recently…). It can go from day to night with ease, it’s creamy, and it fades evenly. But yeah, it’s called ‘twig’, which makes me think of little bits of stick underneath trees that really hurt if you stand on them the wrong way.  A beautiful lip colour, yet the name’s not so appetising. (Doesn’t stop me planning on buying a replacement though…)

Jeffree Star’s Drug Lord leaves me a big head scratchy. An amazing matte white lipstick, which can be used as an eyeliner (!!!), with a name that as far as I can see doesn’t relate to anything? Or does it and I’m a bit too innocent to know!?

Colourpop have some super cool lippies – and some super cool names. Although how a lipstick called Peppermint isn’t green is a bit confusing. As for a plum coloured lippy called Tiger? It should so be orange. Unless there are plum coloured tigers?

Of course, there are also lipsticks with interesting names that initially see you shrugging the shoulders, yet when you stop to think about them you end up having a big old light bulb moment.

Too Faced’s Marshmallow Bunny is a delightful name – especially when the colour is so similar to the inside of a chocolate marshmallow bunny.

Poe by Kat Von D saw a questioning look flicker through my eyes until I realised it must be named after Edgar Allan Poe and once the brain made the connection it so worked. Poe is a divine navy colour as brooding as Poe’s work and as stunning as the portrait Kat Van D did of the man himself.

Yep, lipstick names are a funny old thing. I think I’ll always first reach for the colours that tell me what I’m going to get, yet I do appreciate the thought that goes into the less traditional names – and if anything, it’s always worth investigating what’s inside the tube because you never know what Twig-gy gem you’ll find.

So what do you think? Are you a fan of obvious lipstick names? Are you attracted to lipsticks with names that are less traditional? Do you not care about the name as long as what’s in the tube looks and feels good on your lips? Get chatting!

I think it gives them the edge they deserve by namely them with weird yet wonderful names plus you can read the description of many good high end shades which give you a bit of direction if not there's reviews & swatches....

I just got mad twig! I laughed at the name but I like unique names.

Hard to excited about something called twig.

I never looked the names, just the colour. I will start to do it now, I never thought it could be fun. ;-)

I like Maybelline totally toffee and hint of spice. Some times lipstick name are attract me to buy.

I am a real sucker for colour names. I used to check balls of wool while my mum did the boring stuff like work out how many balls etc... sadly now, they only have batch numbers :-( so I get my fix from lipstick names AND nail polish. Love OPI and Essie. So creative.

Mac Twig is my favorite Mac Lipstick too. I'm assuming the name has to do to with Twiggy, you know how she was famous for the big doll eyes and a nude pinkish sort of lip, maybe it's just the shortened version of her name. Druglord probably referring to the crisp white suits, druglords are depicted in being incredibly rich. I didn't really have it for lipstick names though oddly I really like the name Untold that Elizabeth Arden picked for the perfume, which is odd since I'm not crazy about the perfume, but it makes me think there's a story or wealth of something good behind it so that's why I like it.

Alan Parsons Project made a lot of hit songs based on Poe's work. The music is amazing so the name has positive connotations for me!

I like obvious lipstick names, as well as clever ones. It's obviously not as important as the lipstick itself though. One weird one is 'Oxblood' from the MAC x Toledo collection - it's a pink nude!

I love the Marshmellow Bunny name. I prefer lipstick names that sound like the colour they are but at the end of the day the shade is what matters most.

Oh no, still no sign of Twig? Not even on the driver's seat? The pain of a lost Mac lipstick is real!

I love the strange names that are popping up for all Make up products! I love a bit of imagination... there are some that have me wondering "why?!" I'd love to know the Marketing conversations behind them! I think 'Drug Lord' is named as such because Cocaine is white....

I like some indication of the colour in the name as it saves a lot of time when you are looking for a pink for example to have pink somewhere in the title.

Some of these names are so funny! I think the stranger the name, the more I will remember the shade, like unicorn blood from Jeffree star, it is a dark red shade. I have my eye on Twig, great article Kellie <3

I spose Drug Lord is called that cos the white would be the same color as cocaine or some other pure white drug. Poe looks gorgeous, but I don't honestly know if I'd wear any of them!

Genius! It all makes sense now. You'd think I'd have put two and two together since I watched Narcos...

Haha well that's what I'd assume, but I don't know. I'm not a drug lord myself ;-) I tried to watch Narcos but I just couldn't get into it :-\

I thought that too! The name was easier to figure out than the lipstick itself. Not a fan of that colour.

Yes that is true and the blood does indicate red
