Give Aging Lips the Kiss Off!

When you stop to think about the signs of aging one of the last spots you tend to consider are your lips. Usually you think about the lines on your neck, on the back of your hands, and around your eyes as slowly but surely etching their way into the landscape of your body. But your lips? They tend to be forgotten, and yet, they too change as we age, losing plumpness, with fine lines occurring around them. Sometimes this is a genetic issue, other times it’s exacerbated by our lifestyle. So what can we do to hinder the lip-aging process?

First or all, always, always, always pop sunscreen on and around your lips as the suns rays can contribute to the breakdown of collagen, which then goes on to thin your lips, making them appear less youthful.

It’s also important to keep your lips moisturised, so keep a balm on hand at all times and remember to reapply after eating and drinking. Bonus points for choosing a balm with an SPF included, such as Clarins HydraQuench Moisture Replenishing Balm, which has an SPF15 as well as other nourishing ingredients like Shea Butter and Essential Rose Wax. Or for the budget conscious, Chapstick’s Lipbalm Conditioner offers SPF15. Before choosing a lip balm though, have a read of this article, which explains what to look for in a lip balm so you don’t end up drying your lips out.

As for dealing to those pesky wrinkles? First of all think about all the puckering you’re doing. Of course we’re not going to tell you to stop kissing, but smoking? That’s an easy way to age your lips (and the rest of you!). Prone to pouting? It may look fab in a selfie, but it’s another way to line yourself before time, so make a point of catching yourself in the act and adopting a less line-inducing mouth pose.

Once you’ve busted those lip-inducing habits, find a product that’s especially designed to beat the wrinkles back. La Mav Tinted Lip Treatment is not only certified organic, but it also contains CoEnzyme Q10, Argan Oil, Vitamin E and Sea Buckthorn Oil, clinically proven Bio-Active ingredients that offer anti-ageing benefits and work to reduce fine lines.

If fine lines have already started to make themselves known, pick up Elizabeth Arden’s Advanced Lip-Fix Cream. This little gem’s unique formula helps to minimise lipstick bleeding and feathering all while conditioning lips and softening the appearance of those vertical lines.

So do tell… have you noticed the march of time on your kissers? Are you already one step ahead of the game and working hard to ensure they stay as lush and youthful as you feel? What are your favourite lip protecting products? Chat away!

I love the Elizabeth Arden lip protectant stick, it goes on like butter and you do not need to constantly reapply, really good for putting on at bedtime, and I highly reccomend, its bliss at the moment with the changing seasons.

I used to smoke, gave up 4 years ago and never will start again, but smoked for quite a long time and did start to notice lines in my pout - they have definitely diminished since giving up! I actually don't really look after my lips as good as I should, the lippies I wear have SPF in them though so a good start I guess

Im addicted to lip balm and lip gloss , constantly applying it (even keep some beside the bed) . can't stand dry lips . my lips are still soft and full (excluding the lines from smoking :-0 ) @ 45 so it works .

I haven't found my favourite lip protecting product yet. My tip is drinking enough water to stop my lips from being dehydrated and dried, applying lip balms consistently and use a natural lipstick like Karen Murrell. "NOTHING NASTY TOUCHES MY LIPS" :)

The Trilogy lip balm is nice to wear at night time. I still find it on my lips in the mornings :).

The Elizabeth Ardens lip fix cream looks and sounds like something I need. Being a smoker for 15 years its paid its toll on a lot of things including my lips, I am on my 2nd Bossy lip balm and I also have some Chapsticks in my car incase I forget my favourite lip balm :)

I havent noticed much change in my lips of late. I quit smoking 12 years ago but I do have some deep lines, I am using a balm at night time because I always wear lippy during the day.

My beauty therapist told me the smokers lines above the lips are caused by lack of estrogen, so an estrogen cream applied regularly should solve the problem. Or botox.

I don't really think about SPF when it comes to my lips, I don't even condition my lips for the purpose of fighting against aging. I "look after my lips" because of the kind of lipsticks I prefer to wear which are matte and often drying. I use the combination of ELF lip exfoliator, Blistex Lip Conditioner and Lucas' Papaw Ointment.

I haven't gotten to that stage in my life where my lips are thinning but I do faithfully reapply spf 15 lipbalm before I go outside and at the start of the day after I eat breakfast. I also apply it under lipstick. My favorite is Hurraw Sun Protect Balm with an spf of 15. I've gone through three tubes at least since my discovery of this little gem and I don't plan to stop repurchasing it anytime soon.

My lips are terrible! I have e Claris lip balm but I haven't noticed it doing any good for my old crepey lips!

1st March, 2016

Had never thought about it. I use lip balm all the time, don't smoke and don't really pout so hopefully I should be alright.

1st March, 2016

I'm often balming my lips. But recently I've also been using a lip scrub which is also helping maintain my youthful lips

1st March, 2016

I have to admit I haven't noticed but I do try and take care of my lips already apart from lip biting... I am sure that's not good for early aging? :/

That's amazing eh Macs? Genes and other things like nutrition, skin care and sun exposure all play a part as well. I thought my skin was great for my age until my graves disease happened and my skin really suffered from that.

And I smoked for 30 years. My mother smoked for 45 years and she still had really good skin until she got sick.
