Fed Up of Matte Lipsticks DRYING You Out? Check These Out!

The perfect lipstick is like finding the right pair of jeans - it takes a lot of ticks to fulfill all of your wants and needs.  The right shade, the right formula, the right finish, the right price.

I reckon the one thing we can all agree on is that a moisturising formula is simply a must - there's nothing more unattractive than a faded, cracked and dried lipstick finish right?  Which is why the current trend for matte lips is a tricky one to nail.  With moisture naturally comes sheen or shine so it's actually pretty difficult to create a matte finish that is pigmented, stays put AND has enough moisture to last more than an hour.  Yes, to rock the matte lip look we have to compromise and put up with at least a slight drying sensation, if not full on Sahara mouth.

And let's just stop for a minute and appreciate the prep and after care that goes in to wearing a matte lip.  Prep.  Scrub-a-dub-dub.  One lip flake and the look is ruined.  Lip balm.  That can send your matte lipstick slip-sliding across your face as you apply it.  Touch ups through the day aren't simple either - you can't pop another layer of matte over a dried out finish - I can't count the number of times I've removed my matte lip look half way through the day and slicked a simple lip butter on instead.

If you haven't tried a matte lipstick yet, I bet I've totally sold you on it right?  Haha.

Fear not, today's trial product is set to revolutionise the matte game, with a well, revolutionary new formula.  Lean closer and listen my precious.

The problem with matte lipsticks comes down to the logistics of making a matte finish in general.  Matte products need to diffuse light, not reflect it.  In matte lipsticks this is achieved by having more large particle powders in the formula to create an uneven surface and prevent the finish from reflected light.

The Max Factor Velvet Mattes Lipstick Collection promises a densely mattefied finish, but with a creamy, moisturizing formula.  You see, instead of filling up their incredibly moisturising Color Elixir formula with large powder particles, they've used finely milled natural mica, which has an irregular structure that will diffuse light giving a matte effect, without the need for a powdery and ergo, drying product.

And just look at those shades!

So what do you think of the matte lip finish?  Are you a regular mattifier?  Any tricks to prevent drying?  Or perhaps you've tried it once or twice but decided the dryness wasn't for you?  Or do you just think a little sheen on your pout looks better?

Get chatting to us - we're looking for 20 reviewers to form a trial team to put these - and the new Max Factor Colour Elixir Universal Lip Liner to the test.

I really struggle with my matte lipsticks drying me out, even more so when it's liquid. I have tried everything including a lip scrub right before application and a balm underneath. Im sceptical about this, but would be happy to give it a try.

Yes I definitely prefer my lipsticks to have a matte finish. I find that they last longer and their colour is more intense. I agree that they can be quite drying, some more so than others. I would love to trial this range to see if they're as moisturising as they claim to be!

Ooh I love the idea of these! I truly do like matte lipsticks, but I've always found them to be super drying. I'd be super keen to hear the reviews for this to see if it would help.

I like matte lipsticks, but unfortunately I don't like the drying effect that have on my lips. If I could find a matte lipstick without the drying effect that would make me happy!

I've yet to be convinced by matte lipstick. I've only tried one brand but I didn't like the dry sensation on my lips. It also showed up the lines in my lips. I prefer something with a bit of sheen to plump them up a bit. These sound much better so I'd like to give them a go. The colours look great.

I love lipstick . I use matte for special outings and save glossfor day wear. I would love to be on this trial.

I'm definitely a mattifier!!! Hadn't gotten the hang of it until recently (though can't say I know all the tricks of the trade just yet). A big must for me is to use lip scrub. I would love to try my hand in this trial! Especially the dusky pink on the far right.

I have a few matte lipsticks but I neve apply them as a full on colour, it's usually only a light dab like a tint. I still haven't really found the perfect everyday matte colour as nudes and dark colors look really striking on me. Would love to try this!

I love Matte lipsticks - I love the finish, the wear and the colours. What I don't like is that awful dry, cracked feeling. I've tried using a lip balm underneath but I find that's reduces the length of wear, and using a balm over kind of defeats the purpose of matte right?! I'd love to try this new line!

I'm definitely a matte lipstick girl. I used to like a bit of shine and when I was much younger frosted lipsticks. But lipsticks I have mainly been reaching for have all been matte ones. I don't have any tricks to prevent drying just a good scrub and balm to soak in before you start doing your face. Even then I have to blot or wipe off the balm or my lipcolor doesn't stay on. I would love to see how comfortable and long wearing this new lippy creation is.

A universal lip liner sounds interesting. And if anyone can get comfortable and long wearing right, based on the products currently out, I'd say Max Factor has a pretty good shot. I often use matte lipstick because it's the best for work, but how it dries out can drive you crazy. Look forward to having a look at these lippies.

I have never worn lipstick so don't know what I would prefer. I have dry lips so just use lipbalm daily. Would love to try this and perhaps be converted to a lippy lady. If not am looking forward to reading the reviews.

I dont wear lipstick. I buy them in nude colours but never actually wear them. I dont think I suit lipstick, some people do some dont. I prefer a lip balm.

12th June, 2017

I definitely go through stages of loving then hating matte lips. After you wear them for a solid month theres nothing better than wearing a gloss or balm everyday. It's hard to find a really good matte formula wanting both matte, long wearing, transferproof and not too drying on your lips. Using a lip scrub does the trick before wearing a matte lip since it makes your lips a little bit more smoother. Would love to see if these a gonna be a favourite or if they're just like the other ones.

I like matte lipsticks and it will take a lot to beat my favourite chanel. This brand is long lasting and keeps my lips moisturised so I'm keen to do a comparison with Max Factor ones, the colours look awesome.
