So here I am trawling the internet for no reason in particular, 12 tabs open, trying to wind down.  And I see the headline; "I'll never buy shampoo again, Baking Soda saved my hair."  Yeah, my mind isn't going to shut down anytime soon!

Often on the BR forum members swap recipes for face masks and share home remedies for a variety of beauty issues, from coconut oil for split ends (and about a squillion other things) to Listerine for your feet.  To be honest I never thought much of the work involved, I just kind of thought, oh yeah, that'd be handy if I ran out of x, y or z.  But to purposefully make what I can grab easily from the supermarket or beauty department?  This is a concept that's quite alien to me when I break it down.

You need to buy ingredients, mix ingredients, find something to store the ingredients in.  And then there's things like the smell - a lot of home remedies call for things like egg, beer, vinegar.  And never have I gravitated to a shampoo with 'eau de egg'.

So beauty DIY-ers, I want to know - is making your own 'beauty products' really quick and easy?  Does it work out cheaper, more economical or even easier than grabbing a bottle or tube from the store?  And do the results really compare?

Get chatting below, and feel free to share your recipes if you have them!

I used to do home made masks but decided they weren't cutting the mustard. Do my own sugar and salt scrubs with oils, they don't take long to make up, are definitely cheaper than store bought and very effective. Used to do lots of diy beauty stuff, had books on it. but too lazy and ingredients are usually expensive.

I make my own sugar scrubs :) So far the people who have tried them love them so that's a confidence booster for me :) I make them in all sorts of flavours too :) Caramel, strawberry, raspberry and bubblegum seem to be the most popular.

I did that when I first arrived in NZ and was too poor to buy beauty products. I turned to the pantry and fridge and actually I had some amazing results with my skin. But I haven't done a lot of DIY recipes lately because I'm trying to project pan off the stuff I have and also I've gotten lazy. Mixing stuff does take time and you need to have the ingredients. If you're on a student budget then you don't always have the fresh fruit you need in the fridge for that papaya or pineapple or fresh lemons face masque. But you might have some honey in the pantry or baking soda or perhaps some greek yogurt or tea to concoct something with. I do want to have a bigger budget so I can buy certain groceries weekly and have fresh ingredients to make face masques with but until then it's easier and quicker to buy face masques that will stay fresh in the tube or packet or jar than to go buy a host of those ingredients. But for the person living with their parents or a partner that pays for groceries and has a well-stocked fridge or pantry DIY is perfect.

I only make my own oil cleanser. It's easy as there are only two ingredients. I hate the thought of wasting a whole ripe avocado to make a face mask, I'd rather eat the avo! Raw egg in my hair - no thank you! I haven't attempted making a body scrub yet, maybe one day.

I have never tried making my own beauty products, but some of those body scrubs look easy to do.

Id love to learn

Yea I'm not into DIY products. I don't really see the value in it to be honest. The cost of getting the ingredients will be about the same as just buying the shampoo or mask etc.. and nothing beats a pretty bottle!

I usually only make body scrubs, because of how in love with the Lush one I am, but at $15 (product + shipping) I can't afford to keep buying it, so I just make it myself. It doubles as a lip scrub and makes my skin glow. I love it.

I don't but I have some family that do it for a living. I have always wanted to make a sugar scrub to exfoliate my face. Reading this I might just do that and look in to making my own beauty products more often

I made a body scrub once .... once. It was lovely and all, but there was time and effort involved, and well, to quote a fantastic woman 'ain't nobody got time for that!'. I figure sometimes you have to let people do what they were born to do, I was born to write, other people were born to make fabulous body scrubs/moisturisers/serums/makeup for me to apply on my various body parts :)

I make a delicious body scrub. It's REEEEALLLY cheap, easy and lovely. We had crafty Christmas this year: only home made gifts allowed. One of my favourite discoveries was cinnamon, sugar, vanilla body scrub. I used brown sugar, coarse salt, mixed it with cooking oil, vanilla essence and cinnamon. You can add/take away whatever you like, add more expensive oils and fragrances, tailor to suit yourself. I use it in the shower, a teaspoon at a time, to exfoliate and moisturise the small spots I get on my arms. I really love it, it's all natural, my sisters all loved getting it - even the boyfriend is using it! A real hit. And super easy to whip up as a last minute present for someone - just need a nice jar or make some cool labels from arty magazines. I recommend it.

I make soap, bath bombs, bubble bars, solid body butter scrub bars, body scrubs and bath salts. Some of it is kind of expensive to get the ingredients together but then once you have them it makes each item cheaper than if you were to buy them. I usually give the stuff as gifts so it works out cost effective and people seem to love the gift packs I make up but I still usually buy myself Lush treats :)
