Do You Know How Long Sunscreen Will Protect You For?

Do you know how long a SPF 30 sunscreen will protect you for?

I've been quizzing my family and friends as part of my 'wear-sunscreen' nag-a-thon.  No one has answered correctly thus far.

Not to sound like a nagging nelly but our little pop quiz shouldn't have you stumped. SPF is a DAILY ESSENTIAL for everyone in your family.  Why?  Because it is quite literally life-saving stuff.  And not in a 'there's a small chance it could save your life' way.  Sunscreen is hugely important.  90% of skin cancers in NZ are caused by excessive sun exposure.  And skin cancer rates in NZ?  High.  Really, really high.  We have the highest incidence rate of melanoma in the world.

So, back to that burning question.  Do you think 'the higher the SPF number, the longer I'll be protected?' Uh-uh.

SPF is directly related to the individual's burn time.

So if you burn within 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure, when applied correctly, SPF 30 will protect you for 20 minutes x 30.  So 600 minutes.  If you burn within 10 minutes of sun exposure, a SPF 30 will only protect you for 300 minutes - a HUGE difference.

Minutes to burn without sunscreen x SPF = Maximum sun exposure time

But always err on the side of caution, and reapply regularly.  Slip, slop, slap!

We're looking for 60 reviewers to put a sunscreen from a renowned brand La Roche-Posay to the test.

La Roche-Posay's Anthelios XL Ultra Light SPF50+  is a with broad spectrum SPF50+ facial sunscreen containing an innovative UV filtering system to provide the highest UVA and UV protection.

It's ultra light with a non-greasy texture and is absorbed instantly - leaving a finish that is...invisible.  Like all La Roche-Posay products, Anthelios XL is specially designed for sensitive skin - it's fragrance-free, paraben-free, non-comedogenic.

We know - it sounds FANTASTIC.  If you want to be one of our reviewers on this Trial Team, put your hand up by commenting below and chatting to us about all things sunscreen.  Did you pass our pop quiz at the beginning of the article?  Do you regularly use sunscreen, or are you a bit hit and miss?  Maybe you have sensitive skin and struggle to find the right daily sunscreen?

I try to use sunscreen everyday but tend to forget when it’s cloudy or raining though I know you still need UV protection on those days. I’m quite picky with my sunscreen because I need to like the feel, smell and texture so I will apply it and the higher the SPF the better!

This is an awesome sunscreen. I have already reviewed this one...i look forward to hearing how everyone else finds it.

Wow well I definitely don't much about sunscreen.. I've found it so hard in the past to actually find a sunscreen that does what it says and actually works.. I've reacted to a few sunscreens in the past and spent a fortune on some over the years.. I'm a big believer in making my family wear sunscreen all the time in the summer as we are always out and about having fun.. I'd love to try this it really does sound terrific..

The struggle to find a genuinely non greasy face sunscreen is real! I’ve yet to find an SPF50 that works with my oily skin!

I'm very conscious of sun damage and skin cancer... would love to find a new great sunscreen and at 50+ it's a lot better than my usual 30+ sunscreen!

I so wish I needed sunscreen lol freezing cold and dark down here!

I tend to only wear sunscreen when I know I'll be outdoors in the sun for a period of time, particularly in the summer. I'm pretty good at remembering to apply it in those situations. I usually find sunscreen greasy though and it can easily stain clothes, particularly white ones. However, that's better than getting burnt!

I use to work as a pharmacy assistant in Australia years ago. It is very handy to know. If it's spf 15 it means you need to apply is every 15 minutes; spf 50 means you need to apply it again every 50minutes. =)

Being a redhead, trying to get a tan without getting badly sunburnt has been the bane of my life. I also live in Hawke's Bay so it's a very fine line between getting a bit of a tan, and ending up sunburnt, sore and peeling. As I've aged, I've realised the importance of sunscreen on both my face and body, and I always try to use 50+. I'm so surprised to see that the higher SPF doesn't actually mean higher sun protection! Who knew! I've love to try out the La Roche-Posay sunscreen, and embrace my pale skin.

Still looking for the ideal sunscreen that won't give me a rash, break outs or make my make-up slide off! This could be the ticket. Gosh, I wish I had known the damage I was doing when I was a teenager baking in the sun all those years ago.

As someone who burns super easy i know the importance of using daily sunscreen, however I find it super hard to find a sunscreen that agrees with my skin the majority of them are so thick and feel so yuck on my skin that it puts me off using it. I’d love to be able to give this one a try as it states it is ultra light and fluid which is something that is definitely important to me when looking for sunscreens and can’t go past an SPF 50+ !

Is there an option for - even thinks about sunshine and burns? Haha because I swear that is often me! I have super sensitive skin and have always struggled finding something suitable for my face and not just my body. I've tried adding it to moisturisers over the years but I'm still yet to have success! I'd love to try the La Roche-Posay brand. I've read only good things on BR from them xxx

I have always worn sunscreen for as long as I can remember and credit it with keeping my skin in super condition. Its hard to find a really good one that doesnt leave your skin oily and clogged or leave white marks on it. Its the one product I pay top dollar for.

Now it’s spring time, the days are getting longer. It will be great if I can try this product. My skin is thin and burns very easily, so will definitely need sunblock for my everyday ise.

I had no idea about this formula for working out how long sunscreen lasts, especially as many products recommend to reapply after a set amount of time. I'll be telling everyone about my new found knowledge. Our whole family use 50+ sunscreen as I grew up in the era of 'no sunscreen' and therefore suffered from severe sun damage to my skin as a child. My children (much to their annoyance) are now smothered in 50+ but they also have sensitive skin so it' can be tricky finding a sunscreen that works well, but also doesn't irritate their skin. This sounds fabulous!
