Do You Know How Long Sunscreen Will Protect You For?

Do you know how long a SPF 30 sunscreen will protect you for?

I've been quizzing my family and friends as part of my 'wear-sunscreen' nag-a-thon.  No one has answered correctly thus far.

Not to sound like a nagging nelly but our little pop quiz shouldn't have you stumped. SPF is a DAILY ESSENTIAL for everyone in your family.  Why?  Because it is quite literally life-saving stuff.  And not in a 'there's a small chance it could save your life' way.  Sunscreen is hugely important.  90% of skin cancers in NZ are caused by excessive sun exposure.  And skin cancer rates in NZ?  High.  Really, really high.  We have the highest incidence rate of melanoma in the world.

So, back to that burning question.  Do you think 'the higher the SPF number, the longer I'll be protected?' Uh-uh.

SPF is directly related to the individual's burn time.

So if you burn within 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure, when applied correctly, SPF 30 will protect you for 20 minutes x 30.  So 600 minutes.  If you burn within 10 minutes of sun exposure, a SPF 30 will only protect you for 300 minutes - a HUGE difference.

Minutes to burn without sunscreen x SPF = Maximum sun exposure time

But always err on the side of caution, and reapply regularly.  Slip, slop, slap!

We're looking for 60 reviewers to put a sunscreen from a renowned brand La Roche-Posay to the test.

La Roche-Posay's Anthelios XL Ultra Light SPF50+  is a with broad spectrum SPF50+ facial sunscreen containing an innovative UV filtering system to provide the highest UVA and UV protection.

It's ultra light with a non-greasy texture and is absorbed instantly - leaving a finish that is...invisible.  Like all La Roche-Posay products, Anthelios XL is specially designed for sensitive skin - it's fragrance-free, paraben-free, non-comedogenic.

We know - it sounds FANTASTIC.  If you want to be one of our reviewers on this Trial Team, put your hand up by commenting below and chatting to us about all things sunscreen.  Did you pass our pop quiz at the beginning of the article?  Do you regularly use sunscreen, or are you a bit hit and miss?  Maybe you have sensitive skin and struggle to find the right daily sunscreen?

Get chatting below - we might just pick you!

Yes please I use spf all year round. With Irish English skin I burn beautifully. I also use it on the wee people four of them to sunscreen means we go through it

So wouldn’t it be more helpful to call it SPF 50x rather than 50+? I always feel like the thick, horrible, ghosting, gluggy white sunscreen protects better because it feels (and looks!) like there is an actual barrier between your skin and then sun! My kids hate that! Would be great to get an ultra light one that works well.

I am constantly slathering my fair skin with sunscreen...in summer. That's the problem in a way as I should be using it EVERYDAY. It is well-known that sun protection is paramount to your skin's health and appearance. I use 50+ as I am insanely sensitive to the sun. I reapply as often as I see the sun- feels like I am getting paler in summer rather than sunkissed- fine with me as skin cancer is a trend I'd rather skip. I get acne so the non-comedigenic properties of La Roche-Posay would hit the spot for me! no more ghostly sheen and super protection!

I was wrong on that quiz. I am always interested in sunscreen stories and new products. I have very fair skin, red hair and work outside in the open for a large part of my week so it's an important essential for me. But my skin is sensitive and it's hard finding sunscreen that doesn't clog my pores or cause reactions. This sounds perfect though

Having really acne prone skin as well as eczema makes finding a face and body suncreen that doesnt break me out and irritate my skin really hard! I dont wear suncreen as much as i could and am looking for a good one so i can begin to use it more regularly as it is so important

This would be great to trial, i always use sunscreen as i have fair skin and burn easily, i also have sensitive skin and cannot use a lot of sunscreens, so would be interested to see if this one would be better than the one i use.

I would love to give this a go im in me late 20s and im trying to save what youth my skin has.

I had no idea about the times! I have been really bad with sunscreen but have been better in the past year

I have always found it a hit or miss with sunscreen. I am in sheep and beef farming with my husband so am always in the elements. I have found alot of sunscreens to be greasy and thick or they don't protect like they say. Would love to find one that isnt greasy and has great protection.

I wear makeup with an SPF every day. I have facial burn scarring and have to protect my skin from the sun at all times. I won't leave the house without protection on my face, would love to try this :)

Wow I actually had no idea that that's how sunscreen works! I just assumed the one product worked the same on everyone, so that is suuuuper interesting! I always struggle to find a sunscreen that isn't greasy, especially if wanting to wear it under makeup!

I have relatively sensitive skin and finding a sunscreen has been challenging. I like that this is light and easily absorbed. I'd love to try this, especially with summer just around the corner and I'd be curious to see how it sits under makeup.

I have pale skin so I know how important it is for me to regularly use sunscreen as part of my skincare routine. However I've yet to find a product that's 50+ SPF and doesn't get too greasy on my oily skin. I would love to trial this product and see if it really has a non greasy texture like it claims.

I have lots of freckles and moles so I need to be extra vigilant with sunscreen. I often just don't go into the sun just to avoid getting burnt because I haven't really found a sunscreen that I can trust. I'd really like to trial La Roche-Posay's Anthelios XL Ultra Light SPF50+ though!

I don't burn that quickly normally but immune suppressants drugs make me particularly susceptible to burning from prolonged exposure to sunlight. Sadly I find most sub screens give me a reaction or the smell is off putting.
