Black Eyes - epic or epic fail?

In a world of many choices sometimes it's nice to bring things back to basics.  Yesterday we asked you your thoughts on the barely-there eye makeup trend, and today we're going to the polar oppostie look. Black eyeshadow.

We don't mean a hint of black in a dark smokey eye, we mean blacker-than-black.  Black-black.  Panda-on-purpose.

Think heavy, rock-metal chic.  This look is definitely only for the brave and the bold.  It's a force to be reckoned with.  It walks the fine line between good and bad, between vampyric ethereal and forced Goth,  between epic and epic fail.

Here's our tips for wearing black eyeshadow:

1.  Focus on the lid.  This doesn't mean you can't blend out , but don't go too far above the crease.

2.  Prevent fall out.  Just as you don't your mascara anywhere but your lashes, you don't want black eyeshadow falling on to your cheeks.  Either do your eyes first, then your foundation or use a damp brush to apply.

3.  Black out your base.  You know how for a nude lip, it helps to use a concealer first?  Same principle, different product. Use a black eyeliner to draw the shape you want on your lid and fill it in.  Then press your eyeshadow on to the liner and finally blend out with a fluffy blending brush.

4.  Choose the right lip.  Let your black eyes to the talking.  Choose a nude, natural or frosted pastel lip.  TRUST US - black eyes do not need a red or bright lip!

What do you think of the black eye look?  Could you pull it off, or is it best left on someone else? Is it a look you love or do you honestly just not get it?

Love the look but not confident I could pull it off. In saying that every time I wear mascara my eyes look a bit like that.

This used to be my look in my late teens and early 20s..it went well with my grunge style. Not so sure that I could pull it off now, as with something so dramatic you have to dress to match your eyes. Young rock chick I no longer am lol

I think it looks amazing on the right person! But personally I don't think I could carry it off... I spend way too much time every morning concealing the darkness under my eyes to be piling on black shadow anywhere near them haha. It's definitely not for the faint-hearted :)

Love it! I wear it quite a bit, but definitely with a pale or nude lip, and flawless skin! x

I actually really like it, I haven't been able to do a perfect black eye yet without looking like a panda! But when it's done right, it looks stunning

It's not my personal style, but I love the way it looks! Super dramatic and cool.
