X N Makeup: My Beauty Fails

My Beauty Fails

by Sarah Carter of X N Makeup

I’m sure we have all had a beauty fail or two over the years. Here are a few of my best (or worst!) beauty fails! Thinking about these again made me cringe. Warning: they're not very glamourous.

1.  DIY waxing. Ok, now I don't exactly have a beard or anything. But, I do get concerned about the little tiny bit of hair above my upper lip. So why not wax it? It seemed like a good idea. How hard can it be? Turns out it isn't hard, but it is easy to wax off a chunk of skin from your lip. Oops. It essentially looked like a giant red peeling cold sore. For a week. Moral of the story, absolutely do not accidentally get the wax strip on your actual lip (or any sensitive area for that matter!).

2. DIY hair dying. The title of this one probably says it all already. I had dark blonde hair and wanted to go platinum. I had two choices. Pay about $10 for a box of dye from the supermarket, or about $100 to go to a hairdresser. I was in high school, so you can guess what I went for. My first mistake was thinking that one box would be enough for my thick waist length hair. My mum proceeded to dye my hair over the kitchen sink. After waiting 40 minutes for it to develop, I washed it off with high hopes. Not only did it come out super patchy, it came out orange. ORANGE.

3. The blunt razor. As a young teen, I thought that applying more pressure when shaving my legs would give me a better, closer shave. It certainty did give me a closer shave when it took off a massive chunk of skin above my ankle. I have a phobia of blood. It was a traumatic experience.

4. Fake tanning. My favourite way to fake tan in high school was using the Dove gradual tanning lotion (actually, I should start using this again - it is a great product!). I thought I was doing a great job at applying it. No awkward lines or patchy areas. One day my friends were asking me about it and what I used and telling me it looked nice and natural. I was feeling really happy, until someone came up from behind me and said that the back wasn't good though. Everyone suddenly said "shhhhh! don't say that!". I twisted around to see what she meant and saw the backs of my calves were so badly done it looked like I had dirty water drips going down them.

5. Pedicure nightmare. Not going to name any names here, but there was a certain nail salon that I used to go to all the time. I was always a little bit cautious of them, because I didn't think their hygiene standards were as good as they should be, but a family member and a few friends used to always go there and loved it, so I kept going too. Until one day. A few days after getting a pedicure, I noticed something weird on the bottom of my toe. At first, I thought it was just dry skin and ignored it. A few days later I discovered it was something MUCH worse. I had gotten warts. Three horrible, nasty little things taking over my toe. It took (no kidding) about 4-5 frequent trips to the doctor to have them dry iced before they went. I haven't gone to that nail salon, or any other one since #scarredforlife.

At least all of these things have taught me to be much more careful and to go to a professional if its something I don't know how to do myself and could turn out badly! But if you do go to a professional for something, make sure you do your research - no one wants the "situation" in #5!

Ouch the waxing experience sounds painful! Thanks for sharing your stories.

Good article I have experienced the razor cuts and had two botched pedicures resulting in bleeding cuticles, never again.

I winced and giggled reading the beauty fails which we've all experienced at some stage haha. Oh DIY waxing is an absolute nightmare, I recall my first and LAST experience, it took me 10 minutes to brace myself for the 2nd strip; it's worse when you KNOW when it's going to happen. Not going to lie, I had a little giggle at the orange hair hehe. To this day I just don't understand the complexity of hair dye - it seems so simple but First Lady's hair dye mission proves otherwise. A great read and reminder of what not to do haha thank you for sharing!!

My horror story is a home dye job gone wrong. I was at high school and thought I would go a bit red (hair). Always in a rush and of course knowing everything! I didn't read the instructions probably and raced through the process and didn't rinse probably and so the next day it rained on the way to school and I had red hair dye running down my face! Fail...

I remember using a blunt razor and nicking the skin off my ankle. For such a tiny cut theres a lot of stinging and bleeding! Been pretty lucky with diy waxing. But I did have patchy orange highlights in school.lol

Great post Sarah, 2, 3 & 4 I have suffered myself, the shaving one multiple times. Number 5 terrified me, luckily I've never experienced this, but it's scary to think you can catch warts from getting a pedicure!!

Great article Sarah :)

I so relate to most of these! The skin chunks from blunt razors, ouch, I do not miss that feeling!

I've had the waxing problems before. But I found that when I changed brands, the other brand removed the hair more efficiently so I didn't need to rip off my skin unnecessarily. I was really lucky I never had any problems, I used to get manicures occasionally at dirt cheap places overseas with people who had no experience whatsoever and definitely didn't have any knowledge of the importance of keeping tools clean.

thanks for sharing Sarah! I've definitely been there with the razor cuts - why do they bleed so much?? The first time I "Super Blonded" my hair, it went Cindy Lauper Orange - luckily my friend knew this was likely & the box included the purple toner. so then it went white. I actually liked both colours - my hair was very short at the time so no big deal.

Sarah you're so gorgeous! Im one of your fans on Instagram <3 You have had your fair share of beauty fails, the tanning experience sounds so dreadful! Such a great article, thank you for sharing :)

I can sympathise with the razor incident ... I, too, did that as a Teen and took a 3cm strip of skin off my shin. I still have my "battle scar" from that one! I also made the mistake of passing a sharp razor from one hand to the other behind my knee, while sitting in the bath (with my foot on the side of the bath) ... needless to say I put a decent sized slice in the delicate, vein-rich skin behind my knee. I didn't feel the cut and only noticed when the bathwater turned pink. I thought I was going to bleed to death! It eventually took an hour for the bleeding to stop (after trying everything from aftershave to pouring white pepper on it) and the only thing that really worked was to tie a clean cloth around it and I sat very still with my knee bent to put pressure on the cut. It was very scary!

This made me laugh so much! I cringed at the blunt razoe part!!!! OUCH

3rd June, 2016
