The 6 Breast Questions You Need to Ask Yourself NOW!

I got my boobies, got my heart, got my soul - Nina Simone

Boobies.  Boobs.  Funbags.  Jubblies.  Knockers.  Chesticles.  The girls. Whatever our names for them, our breasts are as unique as they are beautiful.

Yes that's right - your breasts are beautiful!  If there's one part of my body I love, it's my boobies - not only do they nurture and nourish my children, they look darn right fierce in the right clothes.  I always have, and always will be a huge fan of breasts.

It makes me a little sad when women are so hard on their bodies, and boobies seem to be one area destined to cause dis-satisfaction among their owners. Too big.  Too small.  Too saggy.  Too many stretch marks.  Uneven.  Well here's the thing - all of these 'flaws', they are natural.

The Husband's gem of wisdom for women who don't like their breast is simple; "whatever your boobs look like, at the end of the day, they're boobs.  What's not to like?"

If you're not in love with your breasts chances are it's because you are neglecting them.

1.  Are you wearing the wrong sized bra?

Probably!  Most women are currently wearing the wrong sized bra and would be shocked to learn they might be out by several sizes.  Here's the top signs you need to go for a fitting:

  • Bulging out of your cups
  • Red marks from your straps, band or underwires
  • Falling out when you bend over, or raise your arms.

2.  Have you been professionally fitted lately?

Probably not!  For some reason women are incredibly shy about getting fitted for a bra.  Is it because you think you should know your size and feel silly having someone else tell you?  Or is it down to embarrassment?  Bra fitters will not only be able to tell you your size, they will be able to help you select bras that suit your individual needs, and adjust them to the optimum fit.  And most bra fitters actually love their job - they're the fairy godmother of boobies and guess what?  They see breasts everyday - you haven't got anything to be self conscious about!

Get measured during and after weight loss, throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period and at least once a year regardless.  Hey if you're in-store anyway, why not just get fitted and buy the right bra?

3.  Are you looking after your bras?

Probably not!  Do not wash bras in the washing machine! This destroys the elastic, moulding and wires and you will have to replace your bras more often.

All you really need to do is hand wash them with gentle washing up liquid. Fabric softener and other washing powders corrode the material and metal.

Look after your bras and they will look after you!

4.  Are you pregnant or breastfeeding?

Your breasts will grow - do not be fooled.  Get measured in your second trimester, as often as necessary in your third and at least twice post postpartum!

Ditch the underwire (which can lead to plugged ducts and worse, mastitis) and go for comfort.

5.  Do you look after your breasts as you do your face?

No?  You meanie!  Extend your skincare routine down a few inches.  Cleanse and moisturise your breasts daily, gently exfoliate them a couple of times a week.  Hell you can even use a face mask on them once a week.  (maybe when you're not expecting company anytime soon).

Zsa Zsa Gabor used to smear old, dark bananas in an old bra as a home made firming remedy - thankfully nowadays there are also lots of products solely aimed at your breast, including firming lotions and masks, without the need for rotten fruit.

Always protect your breasts from the sun, if you're wearing a low cut top, make sure you apply sunscreen as you would to your face.

Gentle daily massage is great for stimulating the lymphatic system and reducing the build up of toxins in the fatty tissues of the breasts.

6.  Are you breast aware?

Just as you shouldn't be ashamed of getting fitted, you absolutely shouldn't shy away from breast health issues.  Check your breasts regularly, have regular screenings and go straight to your doctor if you're worried about anything.

Love this Nat! 100% check your boobies. Mine are definitely neglected but I do check them over for changes.. Boobs are amazing.... even my saggy, squishy ones still manage to feed and provide the ultimate snuggle pillow for settling my baby son. worth all the stretchmarks, stretching and sagging in the end.

I got my first bra fitting a few months ago at Bendon. It was so great and the lady made me feel super comfy. I walked out with 4 beautiful great quality bras. I love my boobs!

Yes Bendon are awesome -even their outlet shops.m

They are just there, protruding from my chest in a neglected fashion. They are ok, I just wish I didn’t have to wear a bra, I hate them but while not self conscious about my breasts I definitely am about my oversized sticky out nipples!

I do body scrub once a week. I moisturise after every shower. My friends always ask me how my skin is so smooth. Because I spend time caring for my skin. I need more bras. I’ve lost a ton of weight I’ve gone down three bra sizes . I could do with a fitting but I just haven’t found the time.My last bra purchase was online from Rose n Thorne.

Good on you Macs -Take the time and get a good fitting -You deserve it.

I have also found even after getting fitted properly you need to get re fitted each time as like a lot of clothes in NZ same size is not necessarily the same size ! I always get fitted now and my Bras are so comfortable which was not always the case.

It's not the most neglected part of my body but still neglected. I dont think I have had a proper bra fitting since I got my first bra when I was ten. I feel i've put on a bit of weight and the last lot of bras are definitely too tight now. All the wires are gone, I am definitely due for some bra shopping hopefully in the next couple off weeks. I am most definitely self conscious about them but like the rest of my body I have good days too.

I hate when the wire pokes out! I throw them out as don't like wearing with no underwire.

I agree it is so annnoying. I will chuck these out when I get new ones. Bras I had purchased from Kmart and Warehouse pop the wires in a couple of months. I get all my bras now from City Chic. They last me years. Handwashing bras is far better too.

I probably need to look after mine a little more (along with the rest of my body) in terms of skincare. But I always have a properly fitted bra.

nooo my boobies are well looked after, other than my face and knees, they're very spoiled with lotion and regular feel ups, as well as fitted bras. theyre my best asset after all, after my sparkling personality ;-P

I definitely don't care for them as much as I care for my face! Great article though, team.

Fab article! I worked for Bendon for 5 years so I know the importance of great fitting bras! I love my boobs. They are soft and squishy and are great for cuddles. One of the girls I worked with would cuddle me and said my boobs are like her favourite pillow

Bhahahaha her favourite pillow! That is hilarious Kim.

Mine are pretty much the most neglected part of my body I would say but being rather small chested I prefer just to ignore them but I know I should take better care of them with regular checks etc so this article is a friendly reminder to do just that. Thanks for sharing BR xxx

I always see a nice new bra and buy it, then just go back to my old one. I definitely neglect them and need to take better care!

Boobs!! Breasts are amazing things indeed. Love this article for promoting self awareness and breast health <3

I will invest good money in a quality excercise bra that fits. That's the main thing I do other than that they get treated like any other part of my body. I scrub them when I scrub my body and moisturize them with the rest of my body after every shower. I haven't ever gone for a screening I think I'm too young to need those.

I am a bit self conscious about them, because I don't like people staring at them, but I so try my best to take care of them. It's definitely a good idea to go get fitted. I recently got mine professionally fitted and I was surprised that I was wearing the wrong size and it is a very common thing in women. I'm now very happy I did because it's better for them and I didn't often get sore backs. If anyone's looking for a place, Bendon Lingerie are very helpful and friendly.
