Argh sorry BR! Sorry Trilogy!

I almost don't want to write this review because it feels ungrateful... but I genuinely can't warm to this product :(

The Trilogy Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm was the item I was probably the most excited about in the September BRBB - and the one I had been dying to buy and try.

It comes with a neutral coloured facecloth for wiping away the oil post application, which is unremarkable - it promptly became obvious that I could interchange it with any of my face cloths for the same result.

The product comes in a brown plastic screw top jar with a white and red label, in keeping with the theme of most of the brands packaging. It's a classy enough product in terms of aesthetic appeal - though I will add that the concept of a cleansing product you need to dip your fingers into isn't my fave.

The balm is really quite solid - think coconut oil - in it's consistency and so you need to actively scrape out an amount to use. You then melt it in your hands and apply it to your face once it has liquified - making it hard to put the lid back on the jar until after you're done!

The reasons I don't really like this product (and it's totally a personal thing, I'm not for a second trying to imply it's not worth a go, simply that it doesn't suit me) come in with application. I find that compared to liquid oil cleansers this is very heavy, and sits on my skin feeling a bit gluggy no matter how little I use. I find that it doesn't remove my eye makeup well, and I need to go in after with micellar water etc... I *do* wear some pretty intense blacks on my eyes sometimes but this struggles even with my lighter gel liners etc.

It doesn't rinse away as cleanly as the liquid oil cleansers, and when I wipe it away it leaves a film - I find that it definitely needs to be followed with another cleanser, which - when there are products which handle both tasks - seems like a flaw in a comparatively expensive product.

Post application my skin retains a slightly oily feel - not excessive, but it doesn't feel 100% clean, which is disappointing.

The positives are the blend of ingredients = rosehip, mango, coconut, sunflower, olive.... clearly Trilogy have gone out of their way to source and combine the current list of natural 'in-products', which shows an attention to current research and trends, as well as a market awareness that I love seeing from brands. Trilogy are kiwi too, which is always great, and they're natural. The product is a generous size, so if you love it then the steep pricetag becomes more affordable worked out on a cost-per use basis. Also, it smells divine!

Conclusion: this product and my skin (which tends towards oily at times and is much less acne prone lately but broke out like mad using this) don't agree, but that doesn't mean it's not worth trying as there are so many positives.

Tips: See if someone will siphon you off a sample of theirs before you commit to buying. Mum is going to try mine before opening hers and I totally recommend this as opening and using mine was an expensive mistake, unfortunately.

Great, balanced review Trudi. Sounds like it might be worth a try for someone 40+, dry skin, who just wears mascara or a light foundation/BB cream and is looking for some fab ingredients?

yup we must just have very different skin hey soozie? Your reply clarifies why I'm trying NOT to be like 'it's cr*p, don't buy it' - because clearly its not the product at fault, just it's interaction with my face!

Just goes to show how different we (and our skin) all are. As you know, I hate micellar and have to go in with an oil balm cleanser afterwards and here you are having to do the complete opposite lol. For me, hot facecloth, rinse and repeat is the key

Not be gone! More like go, go, goooo

I was super lucky to win this on a instagram comp. I was screaming with excitement as my love for trilogy is HUGE. No mega huge! Then I got another in the BRBB

So this box arrived (surprised at the size and love the decoration) inside is the balm in a screw top jar that looks like it is made of glass. It's a plastic. There is also a tiny wee face cloth.

The product is hard like coconut oil. You scrap 1/2 a teaspoon into your hand, rub the hands together to turn it to a liquid and rub onto your face. I turn on the hot tap now to let the oil soak into the makeup. Run the cloth under the water and try to remove. I expected a rub rub, makeup be gone! Well nope! It was rub rub rub rub reapply rub rub rub and reach for another makeup remover! Now makeup be gone!

So now I have used the face cloth I throw it into the wash as I'm a 1 use wash girl.

My face feels ok. Not dried out. Now I have to wait for my washing to be done to get the cloth back again.

I try using it again with full makeup again. Again same results and I'm not happy or singing or excited. In fact I wanna bin it! Again I try but this time with bb cream on only and a normal face cloth. Well hello. Now I'm happy. It came off easier. I try again with full makeup but with a normal cloth again and it comes off alot easier.

So perseverance is key! If I was trilogy I would ditch the cloth, save a dollar to pass onto the customers. It is highly priced for not a huge wow kind of a product.

It is fine on my sensitive skin. Doesn't react and is gentle. I really like that. I also like using it then followed up with a nice bedtime moisturiser.

Tips: Ditch the trilogy cloth and use a normal face cloth

Make-up Be Gone? hmmmm..

When the last beauty box was announced, I was hoping this product was in it. It had been released around the same time, and the feedback I had heard made me really excited to try this product. So when I opened the BRBB and found this in there, I was over the moon.

This cleanser comes in a brown tub (very similar packaging to the rest of the trilogy range, with a brown jar and a white and red label). This product also comes with a small face cloth, a nice touch but personally, this doesn't add any value to the product for me... and I also wish the face cloth wasn't a cream colour because it got dirty once, and never looked clean again.

The lid twists off the tub to reveal a solid product, which is a yellow colour, with an organic smell to it. It is a balm in all senses of the word, and it pretty easy to scoop out to use. However... I hate putting my fingers in products. I prefer pumps although this would clearly not work for this product but I would have preferred this product to come with a spoon or spatula instead of a face cloth because once my hands go in (even though they are clean), all I can imagine is the germs in the little tub, and it’s off putting.

This balm melts quickly upon touch, and is easy to smooth over face without the mess of it running down your arms (like oil cleansers can do). I find it is pretty effective at getting off foundation, but it does struggle with eye makeup, especially liquid eyeliner and mascara. After rubbing, rubbing and rubbing some more, it does remove most of it. But it takes a long time, and a lot of product... and when I use it on my eyes, it does seem to irritate them, so it’s just not worth the hassle for me personally.

Overall, this makeup cleanser is nice at removing foundation, but doesn't do a great job at removing long-wearing eye makeup, and can cause irritation for me. I also find I have to use quite a bit of product to get the job done, and find this product leaves a greasy feeling that is heavier than other cleaning balms I have used, so I won't be repurchasing this product again

I really disliked this

Usually when I write reviews, I like to give products a really good use of at least a few weeks before reviewing. This though, I could only bare to use twice. I tried to tell myself to use it a couple more times at least but I was dreading it. This product really irritated my eyes for hours afterwards and even a little the next day. I don't think it was an allergic reaction, more having to use the product right around my eyes and it got in it.

This does come nicely packaged in a thick plastic jar. It's quite small for the price I feel though. It only has 80mls and retails for almost $40. This does come with a cloth but I've misplaced it somewhere so I'm not sure how great it works with the product.

This has a very thick consistency, it's solid but squishy as well. It reminds me of a coconut oil texture and I assume it goes harder in cold weather and may melt in really hot temps (it says to store under 30° temps). It has an interesting fragrance, really natural and herby, it's not perfumed at all. The scent isn't super strong but it's not faint either.

Now this says you only need 1/4 teaspoon and it will melt off any makeup. I found this was not enough product at all. You need at least double that to do anything. Also by melting, they really mean you need to work really hard to get eye makeup off. I had to rub quite vigorously to get my mascara off and I still had to go over it again with a new lot of balm. It works OK with face makeup but I did find I was still left with a bit of foundation still on my face.

I was happy to at least give this a go and it was what I was most excited about trying from the beauty review box. I'm actually using a trilogy night cream at the moment that I'm loving so this product hasn't put me off the brand at all.

I think if you only wear very light makeup and have dry skin, then you might like this. Might Anyway!

It's a miss for me

I will start out by saying I LOVE this type of product for makeup removing/cleansing. I adore the Clinque Take The Day Off Balm & The Body Shop Sumptuous Cleansing Butter so I wanted to love this product, I mean really really wanted to. Sadly it didn’t live up to the hype and I definitely dont love it.

Like many others I found a quarter teaspoon not quite enough product. I do like the consistency and application of the product. It feels lovely to gently massage around and dissolve makeup while cleansing.

I found it really doesn’t remove my eye makeup AT ALL though! In which case I find myself having to remove my eye makeup before using this item and this just means more effort.

I don’t have sensitive eyes but find my eyes feel blurry and watery after using this also. So those would sensitive eyes probably wouldn’t enjoy this product at all for eye makeup removing. I find the skin around my eyes gets really dry/flaky using this also – quite the opposite to what I thought would happen.

The packaging is simple and elegant, not a fan of the smell and although the cloth that comes with it is a nice touch, I threw it away after a week. It stains so badly and ends up just looking manky (even when it’s clean).

Overall this is just so-so for me. I would rather use one of the earlier mentioned products that does the whole job perfectly!

Disappointed

I received this product in one of the beauty boxes and I was pretty disappointed. The product is difficult to get out nd it didn't really remove my waterproof eye makeup. I use makeup remover mainly for my eyes as I use a makeup cleanser for my skin. I was disappointed as it didn't remove any of my eye makeup. It does however remove makeup swatches on my hand howver

So pointless.

Removes makeup but leaves a film on the skin after. There are so many better alternatives than this for a balm makeup remover.

Nope Nope Nope

I did not like this at all. The process of smearing my make up all over my face was not nice, I also didn't like the feel of the product wile rubbing it in. It just felt wrong. Using the cloth to wipe it off was the best part, but unfortunately getting the make up off the cloth was more of a mission than getting the make up off my face (because its mixed with the oil in the product). The whole process took twice as long as it usually takes with other products AND when I then when over my face I still had product on my face and had to use my normal remover as well ( this is probably my fault as I haven't had much practice with such a thick make up remover product- maybe if I give it another go it will be more effective). The one positive is that my face felt good afterwards and someone also made comment saying it looked good, but I really didn't like the process and the 'thick' feel of the product on my face (particularly around my eyes).

No love hearts in these eyes :(

I too like most of you received this in the September BRBB. I have to say I have never been a fan of anything Trilogy and nor has my skin. This one makes the blacklist as well I am sorry to say.

I do like the packaging. It's simple but elegant. It is in sticking with the Trilogy branding. It comes with an organic basic washcloth to wipe away the balm after use. It really adds no value except to make it appear better value than it is. I could achieve the same with my own flannels. It smells quite floral which is how most of the Trilogy products smell. It's quite rosy smelling which isn't my cuppa tea and vegemite toast. The consistency I would liken to dripping or coconut oil. I found it to be very greasy!

I wish that it had come with a tool to get the product out of the jar. Instead I am forced to used my fingers which leaves them oily and greasy. I have to scrub my hands afterwards just to get the product out from under my fingernails. I take a sufficient amount and rub my fingertips together and smooth over my full face of makeup. I concentrate on heavier areas of makeup like mascara and eyeshadow. I rub in circular motions to spread it evenly while still being kind to my skin.

I use a flannel soaked in warm/hot water and wipe away all the excess balm. It comes off easy enough but it leaves a greasy sheen on my face. Normally I would think that it would be perfect for dry skin but it's quite the opposite! My makeup is mostly removed but my eye makeup is still there and noticeable. It takes me another two-three goes with the balm and abrasive rubbing to get it off.

After using this for a period of time my face broke out in pimples everywhere! I haven't had that much acne on my face since I was a pubescent teenager. The only thing I did differently was to use the Trilogy Cleansing Balm. I can only assume it injected too much oil in to my skin! I wouldn't leave the house unless it were for work after that. I was that embarrassed about my skin.

It claims to remove makeup like no other. I actually prefer liquid oil cleansers and this confirms that I must stick with my liquid oil cleanse rather than this. I am highly disappointed considering the price. i thought this may be the one that would change my mind about Trilogy products but it just seals the deal really. Besides the cute packaging and the idea behind it, I'm not convinced.

Not for me

I was sent a generous sample size of this balm by my beautiful friend and I was super excited to try it as I had heard good things and always wanted to see what the fuss was surrounding cleansing balms. First off packaging - for a sample this has great packaging, it's sturdy, the lid is secure and you get a decent amount of product. I just wish they would have included the ingredients on the bottom but it's not hard to find them online. But that's as far as the positives go for this product. The scent is the first thing I experienced when I opened the jar, it's awful. Describing it is hard because I can't quite place my finger on what it is but it has a milky fragrance, laced with herbs and light florals. It's not at all pleasant in my opinion and is quite off putting. The balm is quite solid so it's harder to get out of a small pot and it doesn't melt quickly when it touches your warm skin. This is a pro and a con - the stiff consistency works in favour for people who travel and for when it's shipped but it is definitely harder to work into the skin as it does take a few minutes to completely melt. The texture is terrible, once smoothed all over the face, melted and worked in, it just feels down right waxy. The balm is thick and quite viscous whereas I was expecting it to turn into a liquid oily texture - that would have made it much more pleasant to use. The next thing that bothers me is that this does not emulsify and for me that is a huge no-no. I need my cleansing oils/balms to emulsify because it means that every trace of the cleanser is removed, it means that there is no residue and all makeup has been cleaned off. An emulsifying oil/balm cleanser also means that you can go in with your second cleanser much more easily, so I was not impressed with the fact that this is emulsifier free. I am not a fan of having to use a cloth on my face, I think they are too harsh for the skin, so having to use one to remove this balm absolutely sealed the deal for me - I will not continue to use this and I will not recommend it. As for it's overall cleansing ability, it's very average. It takes a lot of work to remove eye makeup and concealer which in my opinion it should do easily. Definitely not a product for me, I will have to try out some other cleansing balms but will make sure it has an emulsifier in it first!
