Argh sorry BR! Sorry Trilogy!

I almost don't want to write this review because it feels ungrateful... but I genuinely can't warm to this product :(

The Trilogy Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm was the item I was probably the most excited about in the September BRBB - and the one I had been dying to buy and try.

It comes with a neutral coloured facecloth for wiping away the oil post application, which is unremarkable - it promptly became obvious that I could interchange it with any of my face cloths for the same result.

The product comes in a brown plastic screw top jar with a white and red label, in keeping with the theme of most of the brands packaging. It's a classy enough product in terms of aesthetic appeal - though I will add that the concept of a cleansing product you need to dip your fingers into isn't my fave.

The balm is really quite solid - think coconut oil - in it's consistency and so you need to actively scrape out an amount to use. You then melt it in your hands and apply it to your face once it has liquified - making it hard to put the lid back on the jar until after you're done!

The reasons I don't really like this product (and it's totally a personal thing, I'm not for a second trying to imply it's not worth a go, simply that it doesn't suit me) come in with application. I find that compared to liquid oil cleansers this is very heavy, and sits on my skin feeling a bit gluggy no matter how little I use. I find that it doesn't remove my eye makeup well, and I need to go in after with micellar water etc... I *do* wear some pretty intense blacks on my eyes sometimes but this struggles even with my lighter gel liners etc.

It doesn't rinse away as cleanly as the liquid oil cleansers, and when I wipe it away it leaves a film - I find that it definitely needs to be followed with another cleanser, which - when there are products which handle both tasks - seems like a flaw in a comparatively expensive product.

Post application my skin retains a slightly oily feel - not excessive, but it doesn't feel 100% clean, which is disappointing.

The positives are the blend of ingredients = rosehip, mango, coconut, sunflower, olive.... clearly Trilogy have gone out of their way to source and combine the current list of natural 'in-products', which shows an attention to current research and trends, as well as a market awareness that I love seeing from brands. Trilogy are kiwi too, which is always great, and they're natural. The product is a generous size, so if you love it then the steep pricetag becomes more affordable worked out on a cost-per use basis. Also, it smells divine!

Conclusion: this product and my skin (which tends towards oily at times and is much less acne prone lately but broke out like mad using this) don't agree, but that doesn't mean it's not worth trying as there are so many positives.

Tips: See if someone will siphon you off a sample of theirs before you commit to buying. Mum is going to try mine before opening hers and I totally recommend this as opening and using mine was an expensive mistake, unfortunately.

Great, balanced review Trudi. Sounds like it might be worth a try for someone 40+, dry skin, who just wears mascara or a light foundation/BB cream and is looking for some fab ingredients?

yup we must just have very different skin hey soozie? Your reply clarifies why I'm trying NOT to be like 'it's cr*p, don't buy it' - because clearly its not the product at fault, just it's interaction with my face!

Just goes to show how different we (and our skin) all are. As you know, I hate micellar and have to go in with an oil balm cleanser afterwards and here you are having to do the complete opposite lol. For me, hot facecloth, rinse and repeat is the key

Not be gone! More like go, go, goooo

I was super lucky to win this on a instagram comp. I was screaming with excitement as my love for trilogy is HUGE. No mega huge! Then I got another in the BRBB

So this box arrived (surprised at the size and love the decoration) inside is the balm in a screw top jar that looks like it is made of glass. It's a plastic. There is also a tiny wee face cloth.

The product is hard like coconut oil. You scrap 1/2 a teaspoon into your hand, rub the hands together to turn it to a liquid and rub onto your face. I turn on the hot tap now to let the oil soak into the makeup. Run the cloth under the water and try to remove. I expected a rub rub, makeup be gone! Well nope! It was rub rub rub rub reapply rub rub rub and reach for another makeup remover! Now makeup be gone!

So now I have used the face cloth I throw it into the wash as I'm a 1 use wash girl.

My face feels ok. Not dried out. Now I have to wait for my washing to be done to get the cloth back again.

I try using it again with full makeup again. Again same results and I'm not happy or singing or excited. In fact I wanna bin it! Again I try but this time with bb cream on only and a normal face cloth. Well hello. Now I'm happy. It came off easier. I try again with full makeup but with a normal cloth again and it comes off alot easier.

So perseverance is key! If I was trilogy I would ditch the cloth, save a dollar to pass onto the customers. It is highly priced for not a huge wow kind of a product.

It is fine on my sensitive skin. Doesn't react and is gentle. I really like that. I also like using it then followed up with a nice bedtime moisturiser.

Tips: Ditch the trilogy cloth and use a normal face cloth

LOVE!!!

i was so super stoked to get this in the BRBB!! it was the one thing i had my eye on at the time. I am a huge Trilogy fan, and expected this to impress me to no end, and it did! you only need a little bit, warm it up in your fingers then massage your face to emulsify the makeup off your face! its amazing! it smells really good, and does not leave my face feeling oily like other cleansing balms ive used. I dont break out with this either, and its not harsh on my cyst acne, which im super happy with!!

the ONLY thing i did not like, it the cloth that came with it, i mean, its a good cloth, but it stains SO BAD! i have to soak mine in sard just to get the mascara stains out!!

but other than that....INCREDIBLE!

its in my top 5 Makeup removers!!

Tips: warm in your fingertips, and massage into your face to get the blood flowing and emulsify the makeup!!! xx

Love at first sight

I think this is the product that I was most excited about receiving in my BRBB. I have tried the Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm and it was amazing. So to have something from Trilogy in a similar type of product would have to be amazing!

This comes in a wee box with the jar and a wee organic cotton cloth. The cotton cloth is really soft. I have heaps of white facecloths I usually use though from Kmart ($6 for 5 I think). The jar itself is nice too. Thick brownish plastic with a black lid, seems secure enough which is great. The Trilogy packaging is lovely though. I just think it looks so classy.

So obviously this is a thick balm product. I usually keep these types of products on the windowsill in my bathroom and find that they can sometimes melt in warm weather. This smells really nice, somehow a mix between rosehip and coconut. I can't really smell the mango that is in it. It is incredibly thick so it does take a wee bit of force when digging your finger in. You only need a tiny bit to put all over your face and as it warms up with the heat of your skin it really melts over which is really nice. You do need to use the cloth or a facecloth and hot water to remove this as it is quite sticky otherwise (I advise using your own facecloth as the one they provide is far too soft). But I really don't mind because afterwards my skin feels fantastic and smooth and clean. It doesn't dry my skin out at all. This also managed to get rid of my waterproof mascara which is pretty impressive!

I know that this wee tub will last me a really long time but when it has run out I will definitely be off to the shops to buy myself a new one (I'm eyeing up the ones in the vault)! Great formulation and does everything for my skin that I want it to.

It's gone alright

When I saw this in the September BRBB I was so excited, I wanted it from the day I saw a photo of it on Instagram.

It came packaged beautifully in a nicely decorated box with an organic cotton face cloth that is oh so soft, I'm picky about face cloths and normally only buy and use baby ones

The jar is plastic frosted brown with a black screw top lid, And once that lid comes of I can smell a delicious scent of sweet coconut.

The product itself is quite hard and rather than digging round using my fingers to scoop some out I use a teaspoon because ewww germs! So I scoop almost a teaspoon out and start rubbing it over my face and feeling it turn from a solid chunk to a liquid oil, quite fun really. I then massage it over my face and hold my fingers with a bit of the oil on them Over the eye area to remove stubborn mascara.

I wet the facecloth with warm water and gently wipe away the day, I am amazed at how quickly this melts makeup away and leaves no trace of anything not even mascara, it even got rid of the Halloween makeup in one go.

After I'm finished and have patted my face dry my skin looks and feels soft and glowy, I have dry skin and this seems to be making it feel so much softer. Even on non makeup days I'm still using it just because it makes my skin feel superb!!

No love hearts in these eyes :(

I too like most of you received this in the September BRBB. I have to say I have never been a fan of anything Trilogy and nor has my skin. This one makes the blacklist as well I am sorry to say.

I do like the packaging. It's simple but elegant. It is in sticking with the Trilogy branding. It comes with an organic basic washcloth to wipe away the balm after use. It really adds no value except to make it appear better value than it is. I could achieve the same with my own flannels. It smells quite floral which is how most of the Trilogy products smell. It's quite rosy smelling which isn't my cuppa tea and vegemite toast. The consistency I would liken to dripping or coconut oil. I found it to be very greasy!

I wish that it had come with a tool to get the product out of the jar. Instead I am forced to used my fingers which leaves them oily and greasy. I have to scrub my hands afterwards just to get the product out from under my fingernails. I take a sufficient amount and rub my fingertips together and smooth over my full face of makeup. I concentrate on heavier areas of makeup like mascara and eyeshadow. I rub in circular motions to spread it evenly while still being kind to my skin.

I use a flannel soaked in warm/hot water and wipe away all the excess balm. It comes off easy enough but it leaves a greasy sheen on my face. Normally I would think that it would be perfect for dry skin but it's quite the opposite! My makeup is mostly removed but my eye makeup is still there and noticeable. It takes me another two-three goes with the balm and abrasive rubbing to get it off.

After using this for a period of time my face broke out in pimples everywhere! I haven't had that much acne on my face since I was a pubescent teenager. The only thing I did differently was to use the Trilogy Cleansing Balm. I can only assume it injected too much oil in to my skin! I wouldn't leave the house unless it were for work after that. I was that embarrassed about my skin.

It claims to remove makeup like no other. I actually prefer liquid oil cleansers and this confirms that I must stick with my liquid oil cleanse rather than this. I am highly disappointed considering the price. i thought this may be the one that would change my mind about Trilogy products but it just seals the deal really. Besides the cute packaging and the idea behind it, I'm not convinced.

Not for me

I was sent a generous sample size of this balm by my beautiful friend and I was super excited to try it as I had heard good things and always wanted to see what the fuss was surrounding cleansing balms. First off packaging - for a sample this has great packaging, it's sturdy, the lid is secure and you get a decent amount of product. I just wish they would have included the ingredients on the bottom but it's not hard to find them online. But that's as far as the positives go for this product. The scent is the first thing I experienced when I opened the jar, it's awful. Describing it is hard because I can't quite place my finger on what it is but it has a milky fragrance, laced with herbs and light florals. It's not at all pleasant in my opinion and is quite off putting. The balm is quite solid so it's harder to get out of a small pot and it doesn't melt quickly when it touches your warm skin. This is a pro and a con - the stiff consistency works in favour for people who travel and for when it's shipped but it is definitely harder to work into the skin as it does take a few minutes to completely melt. The texture is terrible, once smoothed all over the face, melted and worked in, it just feels down right waxy. The balm is thick and quite viscous whereas I was expecting it to turn into a liquid oily texture - that would have made it much more pleasant to use. The next thing that bothers me is that this does not emulsify and for me that is a huge no-no. I need my cleansing oils/balms to emulsify because it means that every trace of the cleanser is removed, it means that there is no residue and all makeup has been cleaned off. An emulsifying oil/balm cleanser also means that you can go in with your second cleanser much more easily, so I was not impressed with the fact that this is emulsifier free. I am not a fan of having to use a cloth on my face, I think they are too harsh for the skin, so having to use one to remove this balm absolutely sealed the deal for me - I will not continue to use this and I will not recommend it. As for it's overall cleansing ability, it's very average. It takes a lot of work to remove eye makeup and concealer which in my opinion it should do easily. Definitely not a product for me, I will have to try out some other cleansing balms but will make sure it has an emulsifier in it first!

Move over oil cleansers!

Its fact, humans don't like change. So when I saw this balm arrive in the Sept BRBB I thought, how could something that's not liquid remove makeup, surely it cannot be better than my oil cleansers?

I really didnt enjoy the first few uses but I persisted as I didnt want it going to waste and now would you believe its my new holy grail.

Due to its a waxy like texture its water resistant until its heated up. Its difficult to know how much to use but a little goes a long way, so I get a finger nail size, rub it between my fingers to warm it up (due to its firm texture) and then smooth and massage it all over my face and eyes, which I find super relaxing as it warms up and I spread around my face. Paying extra care to my eyes Ive found it removes even the most stubborn of my makeup. How? I don't know, but its Amazing.

After a wipe off with a warm wet face cloth my face feels super clean and cleansed, with not a trace of make up to be found.

This is so much more hassle free than micellar waters or wipes and I find it doesn't make my eyelids super red like everything else that I've been trying, and my oily skin doesn't mind this product at all. Plus being Trilogy I know its only full of all the good things and nothing bad. This jar will last AGES.

This is going to be perfect for travel as it cant leak and even for a late night Ive no excuse not to take my make up off - its just too easy. No more messy makeup removal with cotton pads and wipes.

Tips: Be patient, it can take awhile to get use to a different form of make up removal.

Wonderful Balm!

I was super excited that this Makeup Be Gone Cleansing Balm was included in the September Beauty Box.

It comes in a plastic jar with a little unbleached Organic Cotton Cloth. I love the packaging. The balm contains mango butter, coconut oil and rosehip oil, making the balm smell so natural and delicious. The texture of the balm is very similar to coconut oil, you have to scoop it out with a teaspoon or a little spatula.

I scoop ΒΌ teaspoon of the balm and rub it all over my face. I could feel it melting into my skin beautifully and dissolving my makeup. I then wet the cloth with warm water, and gently wipe the balm off along with the makeup.

When it comes to eye makeup like mascara and waterproof eyeliner, it needs a bit of work to remove them completely. I apply more balm and keep rubbing using the cloth. By the time I finish, I end up having a really dirty cloth.

Overall, I am quite amazed at how the balm can naturally dissolves makeup without leaving my skin feeling dry or stripping it. There is also no oily residues left on my skin after using it.

Although I find it does not remove eye makeup as much as I would like, the balm smells and feels amazing on my skin. My skin feel clean, hydrated not dry like some cleansers can do to my skin. Oil is the best makeup remover. I love the fact that the balm is made with natural ingredients that do not irritate my sensitive skin. However, for the price of the product, I would love if it come in a bigger jar.

Make-Up Be (Almost) Gone

I received this cleansing balm in the BRBB and wondered, was this the answer to my longwear makeup removal woes? Well, almost!

It comes packaged in a cute little pot and with its own face cloth (which was appreciated, I didn't really want to mess up my other cloths!). The fragrance is lovely, not too strong but still enough to make it feel that extra bit special.

The instructions say to just use a tiny bit, but I found that wasn't really anywhere near enough. Perhaps I have a huge face or something! I tried to get by without adding more the first time (I always follow instructions exactly when using products the first time, then improvise from the second time onwards if needed) but it wasn't melting it as much as needed, and I struggled to remove my mascara with it. I hoped that the cloth would take care of it though and for the most part it did, but when I went back over my skin with makeup remover on a tissue there was still very clearly foundation left on my skin.

Since then, I've been using quite a bit more product and massaging it quite liberally all over my face and into my lashes (be careful, it's not so fun on the eyeball!) which does help to melt it, but even then there is still foundation on the tissue afterwards. And this is regular foundation, not longwear.

I'll keep using it, but at this stage I don't think I'll be repurchasing.

Tips: Use a bit more than the instructions suggest, and go over your skin with a gentle makeup remover afterwards to be sure all traces of makeup are gone.
