I bought the refill of this in the universal translucent shade. Now having used a loose powder for years. The last time I used a pressed powder it was a foundation that I caked on with a sponge when I first got into makeup. So I was worried this would make me look cakey but surprisingly it doesn't. It actually sets my makeup really well. I do have some oil coming through at the end of the day and I can see the shine but I haven't had any caking with this. I would say the finish I get when I use this as a setting powder is not quite the level of Hourglass but not too far behind for a luxury powder. I haven't had any flash back or white marks since I have a medium tanned skin tone. I don't have the compact so I can't comment on that. But as far as that mess you get from setting powders I haven't found it to give a lot of kickback considering I'm coating my powder puff all over in the powder. I can't believe I'm typing this but I would consider repurchasing considering the convenience and lack of mess. It's been my staple setting powder for a couple months and I've just worn out the design so it may last me awhile. The only con I can think of is the price.
Tips: I like to apply it with a powder puff in a patting, rolling motion over my foundation. I do like to give my face a fine spritz of Mac Fix+ at the end of my makeup but I did that before with my former setting powder.
