With so many choices in life it can be hard to make a decision.  This is where the handy pros and cons list never fails.  (Unless your name is Ross Geller).

We're looking at different hair removal options this week at Beauty Review so we thought we'd give you the pros and cons of the more popular at-home hair removal methods - Shaving, Waxing, Epilating and Depilatory Creams.

Pros Cons
Shaving - Best for legs and underarms

Quick and easy.

Readily available from your supermarket.

You can borrow your hubbie's razor in an emergency.

It's painless.

It actually helps exfoliate dry skin.

Shaving creams can help moisturise your skin, keeping it smooth.

Ingrown Hairs.

The results will only last a day or so before your skin feels stubbly.

Can cause razor burn if you don't use a good shaving cream or gel.

You can cut yourself - scabs do not a smooth leg make.

Over time it's an expensive method, with the ongoing cost of replacing blades and shaving creams/gels.

You need to be in the bath or shower really, or at least have warm water available.

Shaving is the most time consuming at-home hair removal method, with the average shaver spending 5min a day shaving (2.5 hours a month)

Waxing - Best for legs, bikini area, upper lip, underarms and eyebrows
Waxing results can last 3-4 weeks

Hair grows back finer.

After a period of years hair growth becomes sparse.

There's a choice of kits, from roll on waxes, wax strips and microwavable wax.

Waxing is quite a time efficient hair removal method with the average waxer spending an hour a month waxing.

Ingrown Hairs.

Pain - depending on your individual pain threshold it can be quite painful.

Waxing isn't suitable for sensitive skin.

Waxing can bruise and tear skin if improper technique is used.

Waxing can be very messy.

At-home waxing generally requires a 2mm growth of hair.

Epilating - Best for legs, underarms, arms, bikini area and face

Results can last 3-5 weeks.

Hair grows back finer.

After a period of years hair growth becomes sparser.

Hair only needs to be 0.5mm to be epilated.

There are no chemicals/products used so it's great for sensitive skin.

Epilators can be used on most areas of hair growth.

There is no mess nor need for rinsing.

After the initial expense there are no ongoing costs.

Epilating is considered the fastest hair removal method with the average woman spending 40 minutes a month epilating.

Ingrown Hairs.

Pain - depending on your individual pain threshold it can be quite painful.

The intitial outlay can be quite pricey.

You'll need to be near a power point or keep it charged up.

Depilatory Cream - Best for upper lip, underarms and bikini area

Pain free.

Very affordable.

A great method for beginners in hair removal.

It removes hair just below the surface, so can boast longer results than shaving.

It can be messy.

Generally depilatory creams have an unpleasant smell.

You'll need to leave the cream on for around 10 minutes to see results.

Sensitive skin may be easily irritated by the cream.

The results do not last more than a few days.

Will need rinsing off.

So there's our Pros and Cons list for the four main at-home hair removal methods.  Which do you use most often and why?  Are you tempted to switch or are you happy with the status quo?

Shaving is the easiest but I like the results the least. My hair grows back way too fast! In the summer I'm a big fan of hair removal cream! Although when covering large surface areas like my arms and legs its a fair bit more expensive than shaving!

I've used them all. Currently I'm shaving though. really miss my Wellington waxer, but I tried a small town home based waxer & was not impressed. I'd do it at home but my last kit was good, but messy. sigh.

I'd love to keep up with waxing but it's having the time and also the growth, I'm just a shave girl I've never had the guts to try an epilady and the cream just doesn't work on me plus the smell is gag worthy! :)

Shaving is the way for me. Have tried everything else except epilating which does not appeal to me.

Im shaving at the moment. I get threading for my face. Those creams burn my face badly Ive tried so many. I also do love waxing but because its costly I stick to shaving.

A subject I am quite interested in. I hate shaving legs as you have to do it so often. I have an epilator which I have found the more I use it the less painful it gets. I love that it lasts longer than shaving but it really is quite time consuming. I'd love to see a review on all the different products to see which is best in each group. I think about trying the creams but all the horror stories are scary. I have sensitive skin so any method can be irritating.

Hair removal has always been a struggle for me. I have dark hair on very pale skin so when I shave, I have little black dots all over my legs and they are incredibly visible :( I'm also prone to ingrown hairs and I currently have little bumps all over my legs. And as for waxing, I haven't had it done since the beautician ripped the skin off my legs. So in the summer, I cover up completely and allow myself to melt :(

I'm a regular razor user, waxing maybe every 2 weeks? Creams never work and burn on my skin, I am so keen to try an epilator!

24th August, 2014

Depilatory cream gave me a nasty chemical burn, so painful. I've never done waxing other than eyebrows, but that makes me cry LOL So I think I will stick to my razor :D

24th August, 2014

Shaving is the way to go for me. Epilators sound painful and waxing scares me a little!

24th August, 2014

Ive tried all these ways too and on a regular basis. I actually use each method on different areas of my body.

24th August, 2014

Ive tried all of these, Im a big wuss when it comes to epilators, Im a waxing girl mostly apar from my legs I prefer to shave them, as I can't handle having my legs waxed :D

Waxing by my Beautician. She does a fabulous job and I look forward to a regular tidy :-)
