Do You Struggle to Find a Great Facial Sunscreen?

Hello, it's me again - your SPF-obsessed editor.

I get comments all the time about how the boys have 'English Skin' - aka, they're pale.  But here's the thing - both boys are outdoorsy kids.  Jack goes to the park or preschool daily.  I wear Billy every day for a walk.  They're pale because every morning when mama applies her sunscreen, my vampire babies have theirs applied.  And it's re-applied throughout the day.  For us, applying SPF is like brushing your teeth - it's neither a chore nor a burden, it's just part of the routine.  So yes, my little Piwis are pale, but they're still getting their Vitamin D!

The Husband on the other hand - only seems to remember to apply sunscreen when he's rocking the sunburn!  So, assuming we all know the risks of sun exposure (which we do right?) , why are some people not fussed about applying sunscreen?

The common complaints about sunscreen are;

  • It's greasy
  • It smells funny
  • It needs reapplying
  • It stains clothes
  • It leaves youir skin shiny

Well, we've got news for you - yes some products are guilty of all of these things, but many, many products do none of these things.  Just as you can find gorgeous moisturisers out there, you can find fantastic sunscreens too - you just need to find the one for you!

We're putting Cancer Society SPF 50+ Moisturising Face Sun Lotion to the test.  This light-feel sun lotion offers high protection with a dry touch.  There's no shine, oiliness or stickiness, and it won't leave white marks.  The light-weight, easy to spread formula is a cream based sunscreen loaded with Vitamin E.  It offers UVA/UVB broad spectrum, is paraben free and leaves a matte finish.

In short - it sounds like everything you'd want or need from a facial sunscreen.  And with sunscreens like this on the market there really is no excuse not to wear it daily!

We're looking for a team to put this to the test and we're curious as to how many people use sun protection every day - so why not chat to us about your sunscreen habits.  Are you a good girl and use it daily, or are you not particularly judicious about it?  If you don't use SPF every day, why not?

I use a sunscreen in my moisturiser for my face daily but dont feel its enough in the harsh Hawkes Bay sun over the hotter months so would love to trial this as I find most sunscreens rather greasy and feel horrible on my skin

Nightmares!!..that's what the facial sunscreens I've tried have given me :) I have fair skin so really need to wear sunscreen but most of them make me break out so badly I don't want to leave the house. I've also noticed the majority I have tried to use don't smell the best..more like an odour not a scent lol. I would be keen to give this a try so I can go out and enjoy Summer knowing I'm protected.

I'm very pale so sunblock is a absolute must for me, every single day even winter! So it's very important to me to have a great sunscreen, still haven't found the perfect one that isn't too greasy or thick!

I dont even owe a facial sun block! I wear make up most of the time and normal sun blockjust makes it yucky! I would love to try this product!

I've found facial sunscreens really thick and greasy, so I'd love to try this cancer society one!

The greasy feeling is the biggest issue!

I wear sunscreen daily, but find that I have to blot my face before I go any further with my face. Its extremely frustrating when the sunscreen doesn't mix well with my foundation too! Would be great to find and try a product that isn't shiny, greasy or sticky and has the ability to leave a matte finish!

It's difficult for me to find a good sunscreen for my face. I want something more intense than the spray I use on my body.

Yes 100% because I have struggled so much over time and the one I am currently happy to put on my face is only an SPF 15, and yesterday I ended up looking like rudolf! Merry Christmas!

I would love to trial this - I have melasma pigmentation on my face so its so important to keep my face protected - please please please pick me!!

I wear sunscreen 365 days of the year, rain or shine so I would love to trial this sunblock. I only wish my older self had told my younger self to use sun block when I was young.

The common things listed above were so me when I was younger and had oily skin! I would break out too but I had bad acne anyway. Some leave coatings on your face or blotchy un even cream parts. The above brand is trusted I think now that I am older and my skin is more dry I think sun creams should not be as bigger hassle for me but in saying that there are so much make up on the market such as bb creams and moisturizers that have spf built into them and foundations so I think like me many girls skip an actual sunscreen.

I am really fair so sunscreen is essential for me. In addition to the problems the article mentions, I also find a lot of sunscreens irritate my eyes. I don't get it in my eye, but just having the sunscreen on my face, near my eyes, makes my eyes water. I have trouble finding sunscreens that do not do this.

OMG this product looks amazing!!! I am a ginger so I NEED my sunscreen! SPF 50 is a dream come true!! At the vitamins and everything else - I need this! I use sunscreen every single day - I fear getting burnt as I've gotten older - I don't want skin cancer and I also don't want my skin unnecessarily aging because of our harsh NZ sun! I always always apply plenty on my face, shoulders, ears, chest and back - those are the places that love to get burnt. I reapply every couple of hours because I worry it might have faded off. If I am out somewhere and I don't have any sunblock on me I will be covering up as best as possible and hiding in the shade! I love finding out about great sunblocks! It is often hit and miss! I hate the greasy smelly stuff!!! It's not nice at all.

I always like to wear some sort of sun protection. I've seen too many cases of metastatic melanoma, or dodgy looking skin growths being cut out. I'm super pale and I end up a not-delightful shade of pink if I burn. I would be interested to try this because I rate the body sunscreens in this range. I'm a bit of a combination skin type, so anything light and easily absorbed is the way to go for me.
