Do You Struggle to Find a Great Facial Sunscreen?

Hello, it's me again - your SPF-obsessed editor.

I get comments all the time about how the boys have 'English Skin' - aka, they're pale.  But here's the thing - both boys are outdoorsy kids.  Jack goes to the park or preschool daily.  I wear Billy every day for a walk.  They're pale because every morning when mama applies her sunscreen, my vampire babies have theirs applied.  And it's re-applied throughout the day.  For us, applying SPF is like brushing your teeth - it's neither a chore nor a burden, it's just part of the routine.  So yes, my little Piwis are pale, but they're still getting their Vitamin D!

The Husband on the other hand - only seems to remember to apply sunscreen when he's rocking the sunburn!  So, assuming we all know the risks of sun exposure (which we do right?) , why are some people not fussed about applying sunscreen?

The common complaints about sunscreen are;

  • It's greasy
  • It smells funny
  • It needs reapplying
  • It stains clothes
  • It leaves youir skin shiny

Well, we've got news for you - yes some products are guilty of all of these things, but many, many products do none of these things.  Just as you can find gorgeous moisturisers out there, you can find fantastic sunscreens too - you just need to find the one for you!

We're putting Cancer Society SPF 50+ Moisturising Face Sun Lotion to the test.  This light-feel sun lotion offers high protection with a dry touch.  There's no shine, oiliness or stickiness, and it won't leave white marks.  The light-weight, easy to spread formula is a cream based sunscreen loaded with Vitamin E.  It offers UVA/UVB broad spectrum, is paraben free and leaves a matte finish.

In short - it sounds like everything you'd want or need from a facial sunscreen.  And with sunscreens like this on the market there really is no excuse not to wear it daily!

We're looking for a team to put this to the test and we're curious as to how many people use sun protection every day - so why not chat to us about your sunscreen habits.  Are you a good girl and use it daily, or are you not particularly judicious about it?  If you don't use SPF every day, why not?

I have had good service from Daylong liposomal sunscreen and that has been my daily go-to for the past couple of years, turning those rays away till sundown. But it does have the dreaded greasy feel. Wearing my Daylong means my makeup isn't day-long :( Looks like the NZ Cancer Society may have the answer - would love to try it out.

I would really love to try this as I tend to avoid putting sunscreen on my face as I hate the greasy shiney feeling and what's more then that as I've never really found one that has sat nice in my skin and soaked in like it should. Wit hout fail if I put spf on my face because it never soaks in like it should it always ends up in my eyes and I end up with watery stingy eyes and mascara run all down my face resulting in me looking like a shiny hot mess literally which is not cute, would love to thoroughly put this one through its paces in the hopes that it's different

I want to use sunscreen daily but find it so hard to find the time to apply the right amount everywhere. Reapply throughout the day? Hardly ever. It also feels heavier on my skin and I have to be careful not to accidently smear it on my clothes. It can be real hassle, so I often find myself just trying to stay out of the sun if I've forgotten to put on the sunscreen. A lot of skincare products and makeup have SPF but I don't put much stock into them because the SPF is so low and I'm unlikely to slather it on my skin like my sunscreen.

I'm not fussy when exercising but have to say anytime I want to dress down my makeup really can't find one that sounds so versatile as this Cancer Society cream, I'd love love to try it and good on the Cancer Society to introducing more products. I trust them over other brands :)

I'd like one that works under my makeup as I've noticed I still get sunburned

A light formula facial sunscreen sounds great. I use a combined moisturizer/ sunscreen daily and apply addition sunscreen in the summer months. I do find it is hard to find non-greasy sunscreen - zinc oxide products were my preference but notice they are not as common as they used to be, and those that use it in the products charge an arm and a leg for it.

I find it hard to find one thats not too greasy and to thick. Nothing worse than trying and trying to rub sunscreen onto your face and it feels thick and yucky..

I'm quite hit and miss with sunscreen leaving it to any product that I wear like foundation. This is poor really because not all products have a built in sunscreen. The reason I am so chatty with applying sunscreen is because so many if them are greasy on my face. Therefore I would love to try the cancer society face sunscreen as it says it's non greasy.

As a fellow vampire (along with my children) - I hear you! We're a sport-loving family too who struggle to find a really good, comfortable sunscreen that we're confident will do the job of protecting us. There have been many times when I've refused to go out to the beach because I couldn't bear to smear that stuff all over my skin. My son plays cricket and is out in the sun all day, so he needs something he can trust while also not adding to the normal woes of teenage hormone-driven skin with an oily base.

I'm probably in between, although now that I am a mum, I always use it when I'm outside with my daughter to set a good example and it gets her excited to put it on like mummy! I do hate the way standard sunscreen feels on my face though! I didn't actually know you could get "facial" sunscreen so would certainly be keen to give this a go!

2nd January, 2017

It is super hard to find decent facial sunscreen! I always end up with a burnt face because I hate putting smelly greasy sunscreen on my skin. It would be so good to find sun protection that doesn't make my face look like a greasy teenager! Lol.

2nd January, 2017

My skin burns very easily so I have to apply a heavy amount of sunscreen everyday, which amplifies the issues you listed; smells weird, makes me shiny, stains clothes etc... So it would so amazing to find a sunscreen that doesn't do these things! I'd love to try this product.

I've wasted a small fortune trying to find the perfect sunscreen for the face. They are always too greasy and never deliver the claims on the tin..e.g non greasy/Matt finish. It seems the higher the spf the higher the grease factor.

I always try to find a moisturiser that contains sunscreen as often I forget to reapply during the day due to beING a busy mum, I would love to try this sounds amazing and it ticks all the boxes that i look for in sun protection

My problem with sunscreen is somehow they always end up in my eyes even when I deliberately don't apply it too near - and it stings like mad! One that doesn't sting would be heaven!
