Beauty Subscription Boxes - What's important?

Four months ago we asked for your opinion on Beauty Subscription Boxes - are they great, or a great waste of money?

Just in case you're not familiar with Subscription Boxes, here's a quick recap:

Beauty subscription boxes are a (normally) monthly box of goodies that are delivered direct to your door, for a fee. They'll generally be a mix of samples, 'generous samples' and even full sized products.  There are boxes for just about everything, from beauty products, fashion accessories, crafting, food and kids clothing.

Some beauty boxes focus on a specific area, ie, cosmetics or skincare; others will contain a mixture of products.  The key to subscription boxes is that you do not know what you're going to receive, only that it's value will be more than you've paid for it.

Well we're curious about just what it is people love (or indeed loathe) about Beauty Boxes - so let's get right to it.

Is it the box or the products that you look forward to the most?

By the box, we mean do you relish the thought of getting a gorgeously packaged box in the mail, like a present from a secret admirer?  Do you enjoy opening a beautifully wrapped parcel and exploring what's inside? Would you feel a little disappointed if you received just a basic courier package, no matter how much you enjoyed the products enclosed?

or;

Do you only really care about the products inside, and no matter how sumptuously packaged a subscription box is, can you not help but wish the provider had paid more attention to the products inside? Would you be happy to receive a no frills courier package with a surprise mix of full sized products?'  Especially if the RRPs genuinely exceed what you paid for it?

We really want to hear your thoughts on Beauty Boxes - what ideas / features would make your ultimate Beauty Box?  And what are Beauty Box no-nos to you?  Do you tire of products you can't readily buy in NZ or does it excite you to trial products from far-away lands?  Does it rub you the wrong way when you read RRPs on products you can find no further information about?

I haven't purchased a goodie box before more because I worry I will get a bunch of products that are of no use to me. The packaging is of no concern I am more interested in what the products are and how they can be used. If trialling a product I would want to be able to buy it here in NZ or at least have easy access to it via the internet.

Pretty boxes and packaging is awesome, but products are definitely the deciding factor for me. :)

I haven't had a subscription to sample bar for a while. The boxes ended up being annoying because I had no idea what to do with them all. Also the products weren't what I would like so I ended up with useless products and feeling like I was wasting my money. Love the idea of simple packaging. But would love even more the idea of a subscription service that actually supplies us with things we like. Eg sample bar gave me so many black eyeliners, but I'm not a fan of black eyeliner. And so much fake tan that I'd never use! You guys have access to so much information about what we like it'd be great to see you use it. Also would be great to receive more things to review!

I voted for the products but really as i donot received subscription boxes i am only thinking it would be the products i would like>

I think the gifts inside are the most important but the business women inside me screams at least a logo on a plain box because everyone will get to see there neighbors get a gift regularly and they might just be snoopy enough to have a look and subscribe to if they know where its coming from :)

Foe me it's definitely about the products but a cute box is always nice too. I love being able to try products from around the world but do prefer to support NZ. I currently only subscribe to Lusthaveit which I so far have been enjoying and I give away the products that I know I won't use/don't suit. I'd love to subscribe to more monthly boxes but can't afford it right now.

Definitely agree with Kellie about "it's what's on the inside that counts" lol. Haven't had the pleasure of receiving one before but the packaging generally gets tossed to the side and the products are what are the most impressive. I am really looking forward to hearing more about this ... sounds like another awesome idea. (Must confess though it is always great to receive something that is beautifully wrapped).

I voted the box!! Ever since I was a little girl I have been obsessed with presents, the pretty paper enticing me on what is in the inside ( I have also been known to open this beautiful paper to peek inside, actually a very norty habit so bad my husband resorted to hiding my Xmas presents in the shed inside a suitcase last year!!! I found it!!!) I also love nothing more than checking the mailbox (look out anyone in the house that brings the mail in).. I'm also on a first name basis with our local courier and he knows when I'm home for lunch and brings the packages then!!! So that being said my obsession is more to the beautiful box, All that aside the products still need to be good for me to keep purchasing :)

It's all about what's inside I believe it's what your paying for not a pretty box although a pretty box is a bonus I am yet to purchase a box yet but heard agree disappointment

While I love a pretty package and the fun of opening a beautifully-wrapped gift, it's definately the products themselves that matter most for me! I stopped my Goodiebox subscription after receiving several boxes of less-than-ideal products - sanitary products, multiple hand-creams, underwhelming $2 lip glosses.

I would much prefer to get an awesome boxes of goodies in a plain box. It would be even better if it was eco-friendly and easy to compact for recycling :) Something good for me and the environment!

22nd October, 2014

A nice box would just be a bonus! but definitely the main focus would be on the products and the quality of them :) its so nice to get a surprise with all the products but honestly the main thing is quality over quantity. id rather have a smaller amount of products that are high quality that i know i would use rather than a whole bunch of cheap products that aren't worth using that could just end up sitting there !

22nd October, 2014

I'd be lying if I didn't say both are important!!! I don't get them cos I don't have a credit card (and that's why - I'd buy all of them) but I'm dead envious when I see other people with them :(

22nd October, 2014

Don't you know it's what on the inside that counts? ;) I'm not one for foofy packaging - I mean, it's nice and all, but I'm much more interested in what you find inside. I've had a number of boxes, and while they look pretty and it's exciting to unwrap them, it's the lack of interesting contents (and their relation to my needs/requirements) that has seen me hit the unsubscribe button. Brown box me up - then hit me with the awesomeness of BR Beauty! xx

I definitely vote products although I do use my boxes. Mostly the goodiebox ones because they are more practical. I use them to store all my makeup and stack them up. Having a basic package with awesome products would be great to have!
