Are Your Eyes Giving The Game Away?

Many a wordsmith has waxed lyrical about a woman's eyes.  The windows to the soul.  Shining bright like the stars. All that kind of stuff.

As lovely as that sentiment is, I'm guessing that these poets didn't look at our eyes after a heavy night, a tiring week or 5 years of being a parent. They certainly wouldn't be seeing windows or stars, more bags big enough to carry our groceries in, and circles so dark they'd be comparing us to a black hole in space.

If there's any part of your face that'll give the game away it's your eyes.  Whether you're tired, stressed, ill, dehydrated, hungover or just getting older, your eye area will show it.

"Late night?", "You look tired", "What were you doing last night?"  Three sentences guaranteed to make you curse your preorbital dark circles.

What are dark circles?

Simply put, dark circles are the blood vessels under your skin.  Blood pools there for a number of reasons (commonly due to slower circulation, especially when you're tired) and the blood accumulation will eventually cause the capillaries to stretch and leak.

What causes dark circles?

Genetics. If you've inherited fair or thin skin under the eyes, it’s more obvious when blood pools there.  So thin skin + tired girl = major dark circles.

Age.  Aging causes skin to lose collagen, sag and thin, so veins show through more prominently.  Exposure to sun speeds up this process by breaking down collagen and mottling skin color.  (In case you needed another reason to slap on the sunscreen!)

Seasonal allergies. Allergies trigger the release of histamines in the body, which in turn inflame blood vessels and cause swelling.

How do I know the cause?

Look at your relations - it should be easy to tell if they're inherited.  A simple test is to gently stretch the skin under your eyes. If that area becomes darker, the circles are probably due to genetics or aging. If the color doesn’t change, UV rays or allergies are probably the cause.

We're putting the Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream to the test.   It promises the results of a prestige eye cream, without the hefty price tag.

This hydrating product will instantly help reduce the appearance of dark circles, wrinkles, and puffiness to reflect the beauty of younger looking eyes..  It also acts as a light  concealer that matches most skin tones, evening and brightening the undereye area.

And the most awesome thing?  charged with peptides, Vitamin B3 and Olay's colour-correcting technology, the cream renews skin surface over time, leaving your skin smooth, even and bright.  Be gone dark circles!

If you'd like to take this out for a spin, get chatting to us about your dark circles.  What do you think is causing them?  Do you usually use an eye cream for them?  What would you like a spot on this trial team?

Oh that makes sense now... it is blood pooling under the eyes. I never knew that. My dark eyes are definitely caused by a mix of thin skin and tiredness! I habe never found a product that can do anything about it though - I just cover with concealer.

If only you could see my under eyes right now! Allergies, stress, travel and air conditioning have played a very relevant part in ensuring I look tired, crepey, flakey, puffy and old. Help!

I would love to try this eye cream, and although the effects don't come through right away, I would love to try and it compare to other eye creams I've used, including high end ones.

Have been an under eye dark circle sufferer for what seems like forever... Lack of sleep and not enough hydration would be the major contributors to a condition I feel is somewhat genetic also. Would love to trial this product to test if it really can make a difference :o)

I regularly wake up with dark circles, puffy eyes most mornings so this product would be a god send to bring my eyes back to their once youthful glow.I am not sure if genetics play a role with me but definitely is seasonal related and too much coffee lol.

I seem to get dark and puffy eyes at the moment mostly due to being tired. I am a full time nursing student and teach taekwon-do 4 days a week after uni, so I feel like I always need to put concealer on underneath my eyes to stop them looking so bad! Id love to try this product.

Age is definately not good for my eyes and I would love to trial this product ppufiness in morning and wrinkles are always apparent.

I have had dark circles for as long as i can remember. If I am not wearing a good concealer (and sometimes even when I am) people often comment on how tired I look (even when I am feeling great! sure fire way to bring a girl down). I have tried so many cream and 'tricks' but nothing has really worked. I would love to trial this product so I can look bright eyed and bushy tailed :)

If I'm tired I definitely get the dark circles, but covering them with concealer just highlights the wrinkles, and drys out my eye area, which just makes the issue worse. A hydrating eye cream with a little concealer coverage would be fantastic to try!

I'm always so tired that dark circles are becoming a part of my face. I don't use a specific eye cream and generally just use some of my regular moisturiser in the area but would be keen to see whether a specific eye cream helps out.

Yes please! This has ALWAYS been my biggest problem and have been hearing "you look tired" for many years. Yes, I quite often AM tired with five children and early starts but the dark circles under my eyes have always been there. I remember being desperate for eye cream at 14, and at 37... well, lets just say age hasn't done me any favours.

Dark circles are DEFINITELY a thing in my family! Me and my brother suffer from the worst of them all - no matter how much makeup i put on or water i drink (the number of times i've heard that my dark circles are cause by lack of drinking water you dont even want to know) they still never disappear. Am always skeptical about under eye creams because who knows if they are ever going to truly work, but i would love to give it a go and test it out for my self! I have even contemplated under eye filler as i have heard it totally works a charm! Before i take these drastic measures i would definitely like to try out the more safer option first haha x

Between allergies and constant sleep problems, it's usually pretty obvious around my eyes when I'm not feeling 100%. So this product sounds like a life saver!

This sounds just what I need to reduce the darkness , and wrinkles around my eyes which nothing to date has helped . So if you are looking for an older trialist I would be keen .

Panda eyes have been the feature of my face always. Please let me try and cure my dark craters under my eyes.
