Are Your Eyes Giving The Game Away?

Many a wordsmith has waxed lyrical about a woman's eyes.  The windows to the soul.  Shining bright like the stars. All that kind of stuff.

As lovely as that sentiment is, I'm guessing that these poets didn't look at our eyes after a heavy night, a tiring week or 5 years of being a parent. They certainly wouldn't be seeing windows or stars, more bags big enough to carry our groceries in, and circles so dark they'd be comparing us to a black hole in space.

If there's any part of your face that'll give the game away it's your eyes.  Whether you're tired, stressed, ill, dehydrated, hungover or just getting older, your eye area will show it.

"Late night?", "You look tired", "What were you doing last night?"  Three sentences guaranteed to make you curse your preorbital dark circles.

What are dark circles?

Simply put, dark circles are the blood vessels under your skin.  Blood pools there for a number of reasons (commonly due to slower circulation, especially when you're tired) and the blood accumulation will eventually cause the capillaries to stretch and leak.

What causes dark circles?

Genetics. If you've inherited fair or thin skin under the eyes, it’s more obvious when blood pools there.  So thin skin + tired girl = major dark circles.

Age.  Aging causes skin to lose collagen, sag and thin, so veins show through more prominently.  Exposure to sun speeds up this process by breaking down collagen and mottling skin color.  (In case you needed another reason to slap on the sunscreen!)

Seasonal allergies. Allergies trigger the release of histamines in the body, which in turn inflame blood vessels and cause swelling.

How do I know the cause?

Look at your relations - it should be easy to tell if they're inherited.  A simple test is to gently stretch the skin under your eyes. If that area becomes darker, the circles are probably due to genetics or aging. If the color doesn’t change, UV rays or allergies are probably the cause.

We're putting the Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream to the test.   It promises the results of a prestige eye cream, without the hefty price tag.

This hydrating product will instantly help reduce the appearance of dark circles, wrinkles, and puffiness to reflect the beauty of younger looking eyes..  It also acts as a light  concealer that matches most skin tones, evening and brightening the undereye area.

And the most awesome thing?  charged with peptides, Vitamin B3 and Olay's colour-correcting technology, the cream renews skin surface over time, leaving your skin smooth, even and bright.  Be gone dark circles!

If you'd like to take this out for a spin, get chatting to us about your dark circles.  What do you think is causing them?  Do you usually use an eye cream for them?  What would you like a spot on this trial team?

I'm always tired with dark circles under my eyes. I use serums. I really think for me its the lack of sleep I did

oh god, my eyes have crazy dark circles, mostly from being exhausted tbh. I used to use eye cream but stopped after a while because it wasn't helping. I'd love to try this!!!

Dark circles are part of my everyday life and something I'm quite conscious of. Since having a baby and having broken sleep most nights I feel like I often look older than I am due to the large circles under my eyes. I would love to test out a product that could combat this.

I would love to give this product a go. I don't usually do anything about my under eye area apart from patting on a little extra foundation there. I do have darkness and puffiness, especially when I first wake up. I'm not sure if it is genetics, middle-age, stress or lack of sleep. I do have a full time job and a high maintenance child though - so it's probably a mix of all four!

OMG YES PLEASE! I try not to wear thick makeup at work but since I'm doing both studying and working my dark circles are just way too obvious right now! It would be nice if I could try this so that my workmates can stop asking "if I were feeling OK"!!!

Omg would love to try this. My dark circles are so hard to cover up. Ive tried so many correctors, concealers, primers, you name it and either it covers it but i look like an inverted panda, or i look like a dried up waterhole otherwiseit doesnt cover anything lol

In the last few years, I have tried quite a few under eye products. Some of them are quite good and have helped in reducing wrinkles and firming the skin. But one thing I can't get rid of are the dark circles. If this product can get rid of my dark circles, this will be my hero product. Would love to give it a go.

This would be awesome to try as I constantly have dark circles under my eyes, due to very little sleep with my wee Nephew teething.

Would love to try this out! Been trying heaps of eye cream but haven't found my holy grail yet. If this work wonders then it will be a game changer for someone who have dark circles like me.

Working shift work means my under eye circles are BAD! I'd love to try this and see if I can trick my friends and family that I didn't just work some night shifts!

It seems to have become my new look, tired eyes with dark circles. I'm sure the fact I'm falling asleep into my coffee in the mornings is a dead giveaway to my lack of sleep, there's no need for the dark circle that just seem to rub it in. I would love to hear if this product fulfills it's claims as even my kids are starting to tell me i need more sleep!

This sounds amazing. As I've gotten older, (4mumble) things that my mother has that I always thought made her look older are things I now notice if I look in the mirror. Help me, I'm turning into my mother!!
