Lush Herbalism Cleanser Review

Purifying and exfoliating herbal cleansing roll wash. Best used on oily and problem skin. Herbalism is a green, squidgy, putty-like paste made from powdered herbs, which are actually perfect for the skin. Herbalism cleanses with China clay, exfoliates with ground almonds, revives the skin with rosemary, uses nettle powder to purge dirt and chamomile to soothe the surface. Please also drink two litres of water a day, go for a three mile walk, don’t smoke and eat your five helpings of fruit to keep your skin looking fantastic. Herbalism can do magic, but you’ve got to do your part.

Too Impractical

I was recommended this product by a sales assistant, after I went in looking for something to help my breakout-prone skin. The lady recommended Herbalism, saying it was a great cleanser to help clear up skin. Unfortunately, however, this product did nothing for me.

This product comes in a squidgy, green lump in a pot. Haha - it sounds so terrible like that! But since Herbalism is a cleansing roll, it doesn't have the usual consistency you'd expect from a cleanser. The idea is you take a pea-sized amount, add some water, and work it into a cleansing paste for your skin. I had a couple of issues here - firstly, I found a pea-sized amount wasn't nearly enough to cleanse my face properly, and secondly, I found the overall consistency simply didn't feel very good on my skin! It always came out very lumpy and grainy, and didn't really leave my skin feeling very cleansed. It didn't seem to improve my skin while I used this product, either. Won't be repurchasing.

I will absolutely continue to love and purchase from Lush, however! They're probably my number one favourite beauty store, due to their awesome policies on animal testing, ethical beauty, recycling, etc.

Love Herbalism

I put off buying this for ages maybe due to the fact it looked like something that had come out of someones nose lol. But I was lucky enough to receive this as part of a gift awhile ago and must say was pleasantly surprised.

It's great for dry, sensitive skin and the pot I find is quite generous as you don't need a whole lot. The fact it comes in a user friendly pot which is also recyclable and able to be traded in for a free mask once you have 5 pots is even better.

It doesn't really have much of a smell like most of the Lush products do, well if it does, I can't really smell it lol. It's like a bitty dough type texture and the only down side to this is that it can be a little hard to spread on your face without making a mess, so I recommend doing it over a sink. I was concerned the green may stain my face but it doesn't which is great because I don't really want to look like The Grinch going out my door.

It cleanses really well and it doesn't leave my skin red or itchy, it leaves it feeling fresh, clean and smooth once it has been washed off.

Tips: I recommend using a hot cloth after washing off to remove any residue left behind.

@Designer-mic - yep it is more for those with oily skin which is why I found it strange that it worked well for my dry skin. It really is good for breakouts though. Congrats on your pregnancy and would love to know whether it worked for you :-)

Not pleasant

Well after trying and falling in love with Buche de Noel I wanted to try another cleanser similar, so I picked this one while I was doing an online order.

Excitement brewed when I opened the box to revel a black pot with what I thought would be another amazing cleanser. I unscrewed the lid and didn't even need to put my nose to it as I was hit with the scent....... The very basil pesto smelling scent arghhhh I couldn't take it so back on the lid went.

I got over the fear of the scent to try a second time and ready to use it. I admit I do love the colour a deep green that has teeny looking gritty bits. I break a small piece off and place it in my palm and add a couple of drops of water to mix to a paste, the whole time with my nostrils twitching at that scent.. the basil pesto, I belong on a Margherita pizza scent! I know right, I'm probably making more of a deal out of it than I should but honestly I can't stand it on my face.

I quickly smoosh it all over and around my face then quickly wash it off before I turn blue in the face from lack of oxygen. Afterwards my skin felt clean and soft.

Really not a fan though purely because of the scent and I have other cleansers that do the same job that smell good.

Works averagely well..

I used this as recommendation by the sales assistant. I discussed my oily/combo skin type that is acne prone and she recommended this to me. It comes as a gritty lump, and you use a bit of water to make a paste. I don't feel that this is particularly effective since sometimes its too watery.

I also feel that it cleans really well since it is quite abrasive and exfoliating. It didn't leave my skin particularly tight, and leaves the skin soft and new. I don't however, notice any changes or particular improvements in my skin condition so would not repurchase this.

Lush Herby, Gentle Scrub for Oily Skin

I loved Angels on Bare Skin so I really wanted to try this. This is made of completely natural ingredients which being someone that loves my skincare and cosmetics as natural as possible really liked. This one just seems a bit more scrubby than Angels on Bare Skin. Probably because this has more kaolin than Angels on Bare Skin and plus other extracts for more exfoliation whereas the other cleanser has more moisturizing ingredients. Like the name suggests it has a herbal scent, not a favorite scent but not one that bothers me either. This makes a nice bright green paste. I don't find the scrubby particles too rough on my skin but it's not a scrub I would use every day either. After using this, my skin feels smooth. Not as smooth as some other scrubs and exfoliators that are faves. But still my skin was smoother and cleaner than it was previously but not completely dried out. I don't use this when I have breakouts because it doesn't help them heal quicker. But when I don't have any breakouts this is an overall nice scrub. I haven't quite decided if I would repurchase since there are other scrubs I prefer but this fairly decent.

Tips: Don't take the whole pot in the shower with you because once this gets wet then it's game over. Instead store the whole pot somewhere dry and put a bit in a container the sample pots you get from Lush are ideal. If break off a piece and take that in the shower with you to make a paste. Save the pot when you're finished and bring back into Lush to exchange for a face masque. Once a year on Boxing Day Lush has a big sale, save up beforehand and do a Lush haul to get the most for your buck.

Does the job

I tried this cleanser when my skin was at it's worst and it cleared up pretty good however I was also on a medication for my acne at the same time. It made my skin feel so soft while exfoliating it I personally like the colour of it but not so much the smell. It's also pretty expensive for how much you get and is hard to keep up with buying if your on a budget. The staff will suggest just a small pea size but I felt this was not enough and I chomped through it pretty quick as I used it everyday. It's good if you prefer to only use natural products on your face but i found supermarket cleansers did the same thing but for much cheaper.

Holy grail cleanser

I have been using this for awhile now, and I tried other drugstore cleansers before this and many of them broke me out. But this has saved my skin and it has cleared up significantly. It comes in a small black container, is green in colour and it looks similar to a putty. You only need a small amount. Place a small amount on your palm, get a bit of warm water and mix it in until it makes a paste.

However, the smell is off putting at first as it is not a pleasant smell. But I have gotten used to the smell now so this doesn’t bother me. I use this morning and night. Overall I love this one and will continue to repurchase.

Tips: Mix with water Only use a small amount

Fantastic

I loved this product and had bought it many times. It does what is says it does and does it well. I have combination skin and I found that tied with the right moisturizer it is a combo that is almost magic. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Great at first...

The first time I used this cleanser I actually fell in love with it. It got rid of a whitehead I was battling with for weeks after just one use! After using it for about 2 weeks I started breaking out and in areas I normally wouldn't (like my cheeks). I do have normal skin and the lush assistant recommended I try this product but I now know that this product is meant for more oilier skin. If you aren't familiar with lush cleansers, they are a bit frightening at first. Herbalism is basically green mush in a pot and it doesn't have the most pleasant smell. To use it, you're supposed to take a pinch and a few drops of water in your palm and massage it into a milky paste then use that on your face. While using it you don't feel like it's doing much, but you'll be pleasantly surprised at how soft and supple your skin feels afterwards. Overall I liked this product and it works well, I just don't think it's for my skin type.

Pungently Herbal

I went into the Lush store in Wellington, specifically to get a cleanser. I was after Angels on Bare Skin, as I'd read good reviews on it, but while I was in the store, I was approached by one of the Lush Ladies, and she asked what I was looking for, and what my skin type was. I told her I was looking for the Angels on Bare Skin cleanser and that I have very oily skin, as was immediately told to forget Angels on Bare Skin and to try Herbalism instead.

And this is where I made a huge mistake. I knew nothing about Lush Herbalism. I hadn't read any reviews, but was informed that it was great for oily skin and that it would suit my skin so much better than Angels on Bare Skin. So, I bought it, without even thinking about asking if there was a tester in store that I could see or smell.

I got home, climbed into the shower (with a shower dome), and opened the pot of Herbalism. Gag! This cleanser stank! And, it was a ball of paste, totally not what I had been expecting. I closed the tub and opened the shower door (for some fresh air to circulate) while reading the label to see how I was supposed to use it, and what on earth was in it.

Lush Herbalism contains nettle, rosemary, rice bran vinegar, chamomile blue oil and rose absolute, and ground almonds. This combination of ingredients helps to cleanse and balance the skin, while gently exfoliating it. To use this very thick paste, I had to pinch off a pea-sized amount, place it in the palm of my hand, add a little water, and then mash the water and paste together with my thumb, to create a thin paste before applying the gritty, smelly, green mush to my face. It was so difficult not to gag. This stuff smelled awful, although now that I knew it was just nettle and a few other ingredients, it was a little more tolerable, but only barely.

Yes, it cleansed nicely, and left my face feeling smooth, clean and soft, without being completely stripped of all natural moisture. It was a little bit of a pain to use in-shower because of the screw top tub and having to pinch out a small amount each time I needed to use it, but it exfoliated gently and was fine to use every day. My skin even started to look a lot better after two weeks use, but that smell, I really didn't like it. It was very pungent.

Sadly, I won't be purchasing another tub of Lush Herbalism, purely because of the smell. It was really quite unpleasant, and I didn't look forward to cleansing my face each night. I couldn't wait until the tub was finished and I no longer had to hold my breath while cleansing my face each night.

Tips: If possible, smell a tester pot before purchasing to see if you can handle the smell.
