To Go Grey or Not to Go Grey? That is the Question.

Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end. We'd sing and dance for-

Hold on, sorry, got carried away there.

Might've shown my age too with my knowledge of old school tunes...Though not nearly as much as my hair's showing my age these days!

Speaking of hair... That was what sparked the tune in my head: recalling the days when my hair was free of white whisps. These days? I wake up and find more and more. To the point that one can no longer hide the lack of melanin production in my follicles. Yes, gone are the days where I could part my head to one side so the average passerby wouldn't see them.

So as my whites (I can't call them greys because they do appear to be white) have made their home on my head, it got me thinking about colouring my hair. And whether I should. As a general rule of thumb, I don't. I like my natural hair colour, it suits my skin tone, and previous at-home colouring experiences have left me looking pasty, or emphasised my yellow undertones and given a jaundiced look. Also, one can't justify the cost of visiting a salon on a regular basis for a colour touch up, which leaves the other option...

Going natural.

So of course the old brain goes into question mode: What will happen if I let my whites fully grow in naturally? Will I look dignified? Will I look dumpy? Will I look wonderfully rebellious? Or will I look like I've given up caring?

And then... why should I care what others think? I shouldn't. Actually, I don't. Which is why my humming and haaing took all of ten seconds. I am embracing my Betty Whiteness.

And then once those strands have minimal melanin, I'm going to attempt to colour my pigmentless hair. Pastel pink. Purple. Maybe even a mint green under-do to give my daily bun a touch of pizzazz. Oh the fun the awaits!

The question is... will you join me in going grey/white naturally? Or are you going to colour your hair all the way?

And if you've gone grey, tell me your experience! Prepare me for the hair ups and downs!

None yet so not sure but I do enjoy seeing various shades of grey/silver

31st March, 2021

I went grey (silver/white) for two reasons - the first being my scalp reacted to the dye I'd been using for years (had a peroxide in it), then I got sick and most of it fell out so there was no use fighting it after that.

It's not growing grey or white, its growing glitter :) I've stopped dying my hair (about 4 years ago) & am letting it be natural and get more sparkle. And I love it. The only down side (especially if you like your hair long) is growing out the previous block colour, so constant trims needed.

I will be covering up, at least in the next few years for sure, turning 33 this year and I’ve found my first grey hair last week, can’t find it anymore, maybe I was just imagining it?

Not yet!!

25th March, 2021

I haven’t spotted a grey yet. Honestly can’t see myself allowing the greys to happen.

I transitioned to silver over a period of about two years. My hairdresser did this through foils that slowly got faded out. The main reason was time and money...regrowth showing up in two weeks! It is quite liberating I kust say. Now I spend money on decent cuts and hair care products. I must say tho, lately I have been getting a bit bored...maybe a purple or pink temporary colour will sort that out.

My journey of going grey is still ongoing, I have not put any permanent hair dye in for about 2.5 years now. Let me tell you something, it has been the most interesting, freeing and liberating journey I have ever undertaken, sure when you start and that demarcation line comes in, you ill get some weird looks, and people asking you " So what are we doing with our hair"? to which I reply "I'm not"! but once you get over that line (pun intended) and get into it you will see the beauty of your natrual hair come in, the way the light bounces off it, how it suits you, the freedom of not being tied to the bottle of dye is really awesome, then keep with it, and it will take a while, but I have found I have inspired several of my co workers to do the same.( am I too old to say "Yeet"!) Granted, you are either ready to take the plunge or not, and that is OK as we are all different, and if it is too much you can always use a cool coloured semi permanent and you won't be undoing your handiwork. Texturally speaking it is a little different though, a bit wiry but that can be managed, and purple toning shampoo can enhance it even more, Silver Sisters all the way !!

Ok so I'm 50 this year and have been "going grey" for a few years now. My hair was pretty dark but i got sick of having to do my roots every couple weeks as my hairs are white more than grey. So I have lightened up considerably and am now blonde - well actually I have about 3 different heads of hair colour wise on my head haha! I work for an organic hair colour company and my boss coloured my hair using our product, but she's just moved away from my town so will have to try and do it myself!!! I don't mind the grey/white though however not quite ready to stop colouring and let it all loose so to speak :)

I’d love to go grey but I’m not grey enough yet. I’ve transitioned to semi permanent colour though after thirty plus years of permanent colour.

I have been pondering this question for a while now. I've never dyed my hair and am quite averse to risk. Having seen the reactions some replies ended up with after using hair dye, I'd prefer to stay safe. I have thought about 'natural' hair dyes, but doubt they'd look natural. I, too, like my own hair colour with its vibrant mix of copper and red natural highlights. a colleague once asked me which hair technician I go to to get such great colouring!!

Interestingly, I was looking at a few of the older tai chi group member's top mops the other day. Those that have let their hair grey naturally look so damned good. They've got great hair cuts (short), which make them look so on trend. Those with longer hair always keep it tied up. Then there's a couple who have obviously resorted to home dying, and the results are pretty alarming. Let's just say, it doesn't look natural.

So now I know which way I'll go - and I'm with you: Grey to a beautiful white all the way!

I’m so lucky that in my mid 40s I can still count the greys on one hand but I’ve never had great experiences with hair dye anyway.

22nd March, 2021

I'm 34 next month and I've got quite a number of grey hairs, I don't always dye my hair, I don't actually mind them as much as a I used to. I started going grey early on. I sometimes dye my hair, sometimes not. It just depends on my mood.

22nd March, 2021

Nah - I'm not ready to embrace the grey. I love the silver (dyed) look but when I mentioned it to hubby he asked if I wanted to look like his mother (who has lovely grey hair btw)... So its carrying on being blue & green for me

22nd March, 2021

About 2.5 years ago I decided to embrace the grey and haven’t coloured my hair since. I’ve got about 1.5cm to get trimmed off next time and then all the hair that’s been coloured will be gone. I started getting greys early and had a Cruella DeVille streak at the front of my head first but now that I’m letting it take over almost everything at the front of my head is grey now. People don’t even really notice unless I point it out. I’m early 30s and I don’t care what people think about allll my grey hair.
