How do you choose a scented product?

Imagine, if you will, sending a stranger to do the groceries.  You tell them you need a new shower gel, bubble bath or soap.  Chances are they're going to ask you one question - "What smell?"  (or scent, fragrance, type, flavour - depending on the person.)

We all know scent is a personal thing - what smells great on one person, might not smell so yummy on another.  And what sounds like the best scent ever to you, may have another question your scent-sanity.  When we hit the beauty aisle in the supermarket The Husband goes in to sniff test overdrive.  He will not buy a personal care product unless he has sniffed it first.

When these amazing Essano Body Washes arrived at BRHQ the crew was divided, between those that absolutely had to sniff-test a product, and those that could go based on the name.  Tabby was set on the importance of smelling first.  Sure she loves the scent of Jasmine, and she quite likes figs, but was 'adore' the body wash for her?

Me? Yeah, I just go by reading the bottle.  I know my pick is Bliss.  Coconut, Frangipani and Paw Paw - it's going to be tropical-fruity right?  And I'm going to love it!

Like all Essano products these body washes are free from everything you probably want a body wash to be free from.  Cruelty, parabens, sulphates, silicones, GMOs and mineral oil among many other things.  Another huge benefit to Essano products?  They're readily available at your local New World and Countdown, who doesn't love it when you can write a beauty buy off as a grocery?!

There's three beautiful variants to choose from in the Essano Body Wash range:

Calm Manuka Honey Sensitive Body Wash - Active New Zealand Manuka Honey is blended with exotic Australian rainforest botanicals to deliver a soothing, gentle formulation, perfect for even the most sensitive skin.

Bliss Coconut Oil Lightly Moisturising Body Wash - The uplifting fragrance of Coconut, Frangipani and Paw Paw will leave you feeling like you’re on holiday, every day!

Adore Rosehip Oil Repairing Body Wash - Infused with the luxurious scent of Jasmine and Fig, this formulation will leave your skin feeling soft, refreshed and nourished.

So why not tell us - when it comes to scented products how do you pick the scent?  Is giving it the sniff test a must or do you go simply on the name?  Do you know what scents you like and stick to them?  Or do you live life on the edge and opt for something completely unfamiliar to your nose?  If given the choice - which Essano Body Wash would you choose?

I usually give it a sniff but sometimes packages are sealed so the name will usually do. I always go for the more subtle scent though if its a brand I've never tried and depending on what product its for I'll have to decided which one I'd go for as well. I usually gravitate towards more fruity scents compared to florals ones for general products especially perfumes.

I have to do the sniff test but I always feeling a but naughty doing that in the supermarket. Bliss sounds like me as I love anything coconut or mango. These scents can vary greatly across brands though so a sniff is still necessary before purchasing.

I'm the person sniffing all the deodorant cans at the supermarket hoping I can get an idea of the scent- or dining all the bars of soap- or anything that smells- boxes of washing powder- fabric softener- I love a good scented product!

I love Essano, how exciting that they are doing body wash too - I din't know that. A sniff test is usually a must for me, but when it comes to body wash or shower gel, I do tend to go on name alone - and Calm sounds divine to me right now!

They all sound gorgeous but anything with coconut will usually win my vote so I'd choose Bliss :) and Bliss sounds, well, blissful!!!

A sniff test is a must, but if that's not possible, going my the ingredients / scent is the next best thing. I'm torn between the sound of Bliss and Adore, but I think the Coconut & Frangipani in Bliss definitely makes me lean more towards that one, although they both sound nice.

These sound awesome! I normally can pick just by reading but sometimes I'll do the old sniff test to make sure, especially if it's a brand I haven't used before.

The name helps me pick out which ones to sniff. If one is labeled "lavender" and the other is labeled "coconut" or "mango" the latter will be sniffed to see if it's a scent I like. If I'm in sniffing mode I might sniff the lavender one but only out of curiosity. Another reason why you need to sniff is one brand's coconut scent or mango scent might smell different to another brand that really made you like the scent in the first place.

I definately have to do the sniff test. I am very fussy with smells. I have actually never seen these before. They all sound devine though!

I've heard of these and I have bought one but not for myself - I bought it for my darling friend for Christmas. Coinky dink I'm almost out of shower gel too! Usually when I choose a gel I read the names and sniff away. I cant help it!

I do believe in a sniff test though I also like to read what's on the bottle. I reckon I'd like calm best then bliss. But they all sound nice. Often with something like a body wash, if I can't smell it first I'll buy the one that sounds best then if I like the product I'll just try all the scents in the range.

i am all about the scent! I dont really have a preference for scents- one day it will be something fresh, the next it will be something rich and luxurious smelling. Today, I'm feeling like Bliss would be right up my ally!

A sniff test is a must. I have done in store before. Im almost out of Body Wash too. This would be perfect for me at the moment.

I'm an absolute scent person in everything. I love smelling different products and trying new scents. I definitely need to give the product a sniff first as smell is up there with one of the most important things to me. These all sound so good, but my favourite one to try out would probably be the adore rosehip oil one as I love the smell of Jasmine and that it is formulated for repairing skin.

Oh it's got to be the scent. Doesn't matter how gorgeous the ingredients are, if the smell doesn't work for me , it's 'byebye'..I am a suckered for soaps and shower gels so have already purchased this in the 'adore' scent. It smells amazing. I can't wait to try it. Looking forward to what other people think.

I may have to subject 'calm' to the sniff test. Honey sounds great
