Last week we brought you the history of the Beauty Counter and we're heading back to Selfridges again this week.

Selfridges are currently running The Beauty Project - a six week programme of 'pioneering talks, interactive debates and immersive beauty experiences' to help understand the public's definition of beauty.

Celebrities, designers, stylists, photographers and makeup artists are taking part and the collaboration that has caught our eye is Dior's contribution to The Beauty Project. Their Kingdom of Colour 2014 collection contains the Nail Artistry Box, exclusive to Selfridges and inspired by Christian Dior's famous superstitions.

In their own words:

"The House of Dior provides all the essentials for a graphic and arty manicure in a single box set:

Swarovski Elements crystal rhinestones bring a touch of fantasy for glittery and sophisticated nail art.

Star and shamrock transfers decorate nails with the mark of a "lucky charm", homage to Christian Dior's superstitious side.

A metallic lacquer can be applied as a backdrop or layered with the Dior transfer patterns.

The Gel Coat provides spectacular shape and shine as the finishing touch to these couture looks."

The two stencil sets included in the kit are said to be lucky charms, loved by Monsieur Christian Dior.

Dior's superstitions are said to have increased with age - a few of our favourites include:

  1. He never began one of this fashion shows without first consulting his tarot card reader, Madame Delahaye.
  2. In every collection he launched, he included a coat named after his birth place, Grandville.
  3. In every show at least one of his models had to wear his favorite flower, Lily of the Valley.
  4. His favourite number was 8 - his atelier included 8 floors and 8 workshops
  5. He carried lucky charms in his pockets at all times and was always on the look out for portents.

Dior teamed with Anatole Rainey to create the box.

Dior's newly appointed International Nail Designer is a  mancurist who has worked on the nails of Kate Moss, Gwenyth Paltrow and Brad Pitt, as well as designing nail looks for companies like Prada, Saint Laurent and Mulberry.

Retailing at 46 pounds (around $90 NZ) the Dior Nail Artistry Box contains - Dior Vernis in Chrome, A glossy gel top coat, 2 sets of nail stencils, Swarovski crystals and a cute pair of Dior tweezers.

We're quite in love with the bejewelled feature nail look created with with the set, but let's turn it over to you.

Do design pedigree and prestige automatically make a product desirable to you?  Are nail stencils fashion forward, or a flash back to your school days?  Would you brand your nails with a designer's monogram?  And would you pay almost $100 so you could?  What do you think of the Dior Nail Artistry Box?

Definitely would pay big money to use a designers monogram - the sparkly finger looks nice for a special evening - think I would just stick to the plain silver! Definitely wouldnt pay $100 for a nail polish - outrageous

I couldn't justifying paying that much! Personally, the only kind of nail art I can tolerate is done with nail polish. I find textured things on my nails really just get in the way more than anything!

With my nails I just prefer something simple. The most outrageous I go for is an accent nail that's a different colour. The idea of this is interesting but the price as well as the time taken to do this would not, in my opinion.

Ohh I wish this was in the vault!! I totally want a set. I love everything to do with nails, and so this would fit in nicely at my house. I wouldn't use the initials on the stencils but live the cute clovers and stars. Would love a few more crystals in the kit :) But otherwise i think it looks like a great gift.

I love the colour and the crystals but the price is a little excessive. And I'm not a fan of the monogram. As much as I love the idea behind this I think I'd rather just buy a cheaper silver polish - CND does a gorgeous "Silver Chrome" shellac polish that looks very similar, at a much better price!

I think the bejewelled feature could look quite cool, on occassion and down played a bit i.e. not the entire nail, but maybe one or two diamantes.... As for the monograms, no sir-ee!!

6th May, 2014

I think the jeweled nail looks really pretty, but I personally wouldn't want the stencils. I would never pay $100 for a nail set though!!

6th May, 2014

I've never owned a set of nail stencils but if I did get a set of stencils it wouldn't be a designers overpriced monogram. I do like the look of a feature nail although I'm not good enough at nail art to do it on myself. If someone gave me the set I'd happily use it but definitely wouldn't spend almost $100 to own a set and that shade of metallic silver doesn't suit my skin tone. I do think the shamrocks might've been a hit on St. Paddy's day especially if there was a green polish to go with it, but I don't know anyone who would spend that much a nail polish set for a St. Paddy's day look. I think if I would spend that much on polishes and nail care I would get some good quality manicure tools and base and nail strengthening stuff and a bunch of pretty colors and stencils rather than this one overpriced set.

Those are gorgeous. I can't do anything to my nails due to work but at least I can still look.

5th May, 2014

Love the look but would have to have a very special event before I would consider spending that sort of money.

5th May, 2014

I love my nail art as much as the next person but no way would I pay that kind of money..

5th May, 2014

I actually would spend $90 on this...I'm probably the only one, but as a nail tech, I live and breath nail polish, kits, and accessories. I would actually love to own this kit for my own personal use. And I probably would brand my nails too lol, I've done Chanel and Louis Vuitton on client's nails before.

5th May, 2014

I think this looks fabulous I'd love to have a play with it, I'm not to sure on the monograms unless that actually meant something to you lol, the box looks so classy and would be awesome to keep everything looking great not sure if I'd be keen on spending big bucks thou I'm such an Opi fan that I'm not too sure how Dior polish compares :)

5th May, 2014

YES!! I love this!!! I am a nail polish obsessive. I love stencils, they make a manicure look so interesting. Swarovski's on your nails? YES please! I probably wouldn't use the monogram stencils though as it only says CD. No-one will know why you have CD on your nails as they won't click what it stands for

5th May, 2014

I personally would not pay for this, especially when you can go elsewhere and get coloured metallic stickers of all the designers monograms for no more than $4

exactly!

No point in spending top dollar when something else could look just as good for less. I like the crystals too but I better I could find something cheaper at the two dollar or craft store for nail art.

Well that makes sense if someone will pay you to do that mani on them. The clover would probably be popular around St. Paddy's day. But yeah $90 is quite steep.

Yeah I remember a time like that when I wasn't allowed to paint or grow them long due to my job. What sucked was that was during my teens when I was really into having beautiful long, painted nails.
