If eyes are the windows to the soul then eye makeup must be the window dressings.  And just as the right curtains, swag, treatments, blinds or pleating can pull a room together, the right eye makeup can pull your whole look together.

And just like interior design, makeup can be defined by the decade - so let's take a look back through the years and check out some statement eye looks.

1920s - Louise Brookes

Think soot.  The eye makeup of the 20s was dark, grainy and smudged.  Often just one product, a kohl, was used to smudge around the whole eye.

1930s - Marlene Dietrich

Paired with crazy-lady thin eyebrows were thin flicks of eyeliner.  Eyeshadow in blues to violets (for blondes) or browns to deep purples (for brunettes) was applied from the lashline to eyebrow.

1940s - Lauren Bacall

With wartime came a more neutral look.  Eyebrows were groomed to their natural shape and natural browns and light beiges and greys were the go to look.  Mascara and eyeliner were used lightly on the upper lids only.

1950s - Natalie Wood

With the era of glamour came the original brow game and smokey eye.  Brows were thick and bold and lashes were thick and long.  Eyeshadows were shimmery and tones of grey were the most popular.

1960s - Brigitte Bardot

The 60s weren't just about free love - people began experimenting with blending different colours in their eye looks.  Eyes were boldly lined top and bottom.

1970s - Donna Summer

Every day was a disco in the 70s.  Eyeliner and mascara were natural browns.  The key to 70s eye makeup was in the pearlescent and bright eyeshadow worn all around the eye.  Light eye pencils were used on the inner lash lines.

1980s - Debbie Harry

Anything went in the 80s - as long as it didn't go together that is.  Think clashing colours - oranges, pinks, greens, blues.  Teamed with heavy mascara and eyeliner, it was a look for the bold.

1990s -Winona Ryder

The nineties is a difficult decade to pin down.  But surely amidst the neutral shades, the standout look has to be the grunge look.  Think smokey brown eyes, nude lips and dark, thin browns.  Heroin chic if you will.

2000s - Angelina Jolie

What were you doing back in the millenium?  Probably practising perfect winged eyeliner!  The cat's eye saw huge popularity and was easily adapted by all styles. From classic and sophisticated to edgy and gothic, the key to noughties eye looks is eyeliner.

I do smokey mostly but I also do 20s, 50s, 2000s and the rock chick. Today I think smokey and winged both have a place.

Ooooh so much variation. Fun! 80s is a pretty hilarious one, gotta love it. They'll all come round again no doubt.....!

I love the 50's glamour - eyes, lips and lashes!!!

This era at the moment is a difficult one to pin down I think, so many people experimenting! Maybe just that? Experimental - so many different looks and people are experimenting with different shapes, pictures, shades and graphics

I think the heavier brows will definitely be the definitive look for the current era. I think eyeliner and smoky eyes are the trends that will be remembered down track. My signature eye look is probably the 1940's and 1950's due to my natural brow shape - no plucking required for me :)

I'm the cat eye! Big bold brows and large flicks! Betty page is my style icon!!

I think the eye look that defines right now is a modern smokey eye with a pop of bright colour and winged liner. My signature eye look is a orange, red, matte brown/ bronzey smokey eye. I believe my signature eye look belongs in the 1940's / 1920's.

Love smokey eyes ... just have to learn how to do it right haha

I've been seeing a lot of natural coloured eyeshadows as well as black smokey eyes. I love both but have currently been sporting the natural colours with a bit of shimmer in it.

I like natural smokey eyes, and often don't bother with eye liner unless I'm going out.

Natalie Wood is my favourite style just wish I could look the same -I think people are more open to a style that suits them so often there is a mix that just suits the individual.-Why not !

It seems like anything goes nowadays, but a lot of looks are quite subtle.

Personally I loved the 80s looks - big make up, big hair, and big clothing - it felt like affluence and abundance and had lots of glamour and colour!

I went to a party on the weekend dressed as a glum punk rock chick circa late 70's early 80's, and had such fun doing my make up! The thick bright matte pink streak of blusher down the cheek contour, green and blue exaggerated eye out to a peak beyond my eyebrow, glossy orange lip, masses of mascara and coloured eyebrows haha!! I realised how much pigment's were bolder back then, and that matte powders were more in. Now I'm hankering for a yellow matte eyeshadow! Wasn't my best look however, wish I had a day job where a 20's or 90's grunge eye was acceptable.

Probably the 1940s is where my look ends up. I wear fairly neutral eyeshadow for every day, beige and grey and my brows are pretty natural looking and I don't line my lower waterline. I have really small monolids so when I wear eyeliner it's not thick and often just on my upper waterline. It don't where eyeliner on my lower waterline much and when I do I won't line more than two thirds of the way in. However when I do wear mascara I will wear on both the upper and lower lashes. I'm probably one of the few women who haven't mastered the winged liner look.

I love eyes!!!! I also love changing the colour and style of my eye makeup, I pretty much change it every day.

I think my signature eye look is probably as mash up of the 2000s and maybe the 80s?? Not sure really it's just whatever mood I'm in really :)

I would definitely love to try the new gel eyebrow makeup that's out though, my brows are a bit thin on it and could do with some plumping, that would help my eyes out no end!!!

17th March, 2015

At the moment I'm trying to master a smoky eye. I tend to use purples because they are my fave colour but also try and use Browns and dark colours to get a true smoky eye. I think trens change quickly now largely because of the Internet and fast flow of information so wouldn't be able to pin down a look for the decade.
