Tried and true

I used to religiously use the 'Cappuccino' Shade of this but recently have switched to the 'Espresso' shade, which is a dark brown.

As a starter...my hair is entirely grey, and I have been dyeing it (myself most of the time, at salons occasionally) since I was about 14. I'm 34 so over the years I've experimented with a LOT of dyes and colours, but this one is very consistent and well priced for good results.

In my (annoying) hair the colour lasts 2-3 weeks but this is usual for me as my hair grows SUPER fast. The roots are the only place that my grey shows.

The packaging for Garnier Nutrisse dyes is a distinctive bright green, with accurate depictions of the final colour on the model on the front, and on the colour panels.

The box contains the dye cream, the mixer fluid, a wee bottle of conditioner (so much better than the one use sachets other brands use!), a decent pair of gloves and easy-to-follow instructions.

While there is the inevitable chemical scent to this dye it's definitely not as bad as some I've used, and the natural oils seem to nullify that a little.

The dye works in the specified time frame, but I leave it on half an hour because I always do (oops haha). It washes out cleanly and leaves reasonably well conditioned hair behind even without the conditioner.

The conditioner though is well worth it. It's a generous size (I use mine for a few days after dying) and super strength, helping your hair to recover fast from the dye. I *wish* they sold the conditioner separately so I could use it all the time, actually!

The end colour is deep and vibrant, with a lovely gloss to it. It really picks my greys out and covers them perfectly, without looking fake or obvious.

While RRP is around $15 it's often on special for closer to $10, and well worth a try.

Tips: Massage it into your scalp if you're covering greys. Beware as it can feel a little itchy after until you've shampooed a couple times, but you get much better coverage at the roots that way.

The colour is good but I can't recommend it

I used this product last night and had to use two boxes because my hair is long. It was a special offer for a 1/3 off full price which was good value.

I couldn’t find the cappuccino colour I wanted though so opted for the next darkest brown.

I do like the colour and it did cover my thick and springy grey hairs well but really the negative outweighed the positive by far.

On the plus side: The packaging is designed to be easy to use and the colour is fine. That's as much as I can say about that.

On the negative side: The most obnoxious thing is the really intense chemical odour which I didn’t expect from a dark colouring product. It smelled like ammonia from a wet nappy and is as strong as bleach concoction you would use to lighten your hair. It’s really not nice and hangs around after it dries.

Note to self: don’t do this at night before bed again unless you want to choke in your sleep lol.

The gloves are flimsy and split apart while I used them and the product stripped the clear nail varnish off of my nails while i rinsed it out and applied the conditioner!

The conditioner isn’t that great either for that matter, especially when you consider I used the two small plastic bottles of it and still needed more. I had to apply a little of another nourishing conditioner product on the ends of my hair after it had dried. That is also bearing in mind I had my hair cut last week so it wasn’t in need of any split ends trimming off.

My first thought was “what ingredients does this have?” Well, I checked it out. I don’t know if other hair colouring has this amount of chemicals in it, but really is this necessary?

Tips: It may be better suited to shorter hair and I wouldn't recommend it if you have allergies to chemicals, the smell is knockout strong and these are the ingredients:

Ingredients:

Nutrisse Colorant: Aqua/Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Deceth-3, Laureth-12, Ammonium Hydroxide, Oleth-30, Lauric Acid, Hexadimethrine Chloride, Glycol Distearate, Polyquaternium-2, Ethanolamine, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, P-Phenylenediamine, Ci 77891/Titanium Dioxide, 2,4-Diaminophenoxyethanol Hcl, M-Aminophenol, Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Metabisulfite, Dimethicone, Pentasodium Pentetate, N,N-Bis(2-Hydroxyethyl)-P-Phenylenediamine Sulfate, Parfum/Fragrance, Carbomer, Resorcinol, Vitis Vinifera Seed Oil/Grape Seed Oil. Um no, never again.

Did a good job

I purchased this when it was on sale at The Warehouse for just under $10. I thought that the colour was easy to apply and I got enough product to cover all my hair (my hair is shoulder length so if your hair is longer than that I would recommend using 2 bottles). I found the smells to be quite strong for a brown hair colour, it did have a bleach smell to it. The colour came up really nice and natural looking and was similar to the match on the box. I love the conditioner that comes with it, it smells amazing and made my hair so soft and silky. You didn't need to use much conditioner for this to happen so the little tube actually lasted me quite a few washes. I found that the colour did fade faster than other products I have used but for the price I think that it is still great value.

Great Colour

Was really easy to apply and kept the colour the same as when had done at the hairdressers. Didnt have a harsh smell or burn my scalp. Was really pleased with Nutrisse and will be using from now on.

Old trusty

I don't like the idea of using hair dyes with ammonium in it, but this really is one of the best hair dyes. For me, the benefits end up outweighing the ammonium/chemical smell.

The benefits being: - Gorgeous bright colours (I have used Espresso and more recently Crimson Promise) - Leaves hair feeling very shiny and soft - Very easy to apply - not too runny (non drip) and a easy to hold bottle - Covers all greys - Gentle on my scalp - Good price (often on sale) - Nourishing Conditioner is thick and leaves hair feeling lovely and soft.

The espresso colour was long lasting (8 weeks +) but with the crimson promise the red hue faded after 3 weeks, but it still has a nice warm brown colour afterwards.

I have tried many other hair dyes, but I always end up coming back to this one.

Always turns out darker

I have been dying my hair for 5 years and have found that the browns always turn out a lot darker than shown on the package.

Tips: Always buy 1-2 shades lighter than you want to go :) & dont keep in longer than suggested

Garnier Nutrisse

I have used this hair colour over the years. It smells lovely and the oils make your hair shiney and soft just as the manufacturers claim. The problem I have found with this product is it doesnt cover my greys consistantly. Its an okay coverage but sometimes i find sparklies still there after ive put a colour through.

Great hair dye

I does an amazing job colouring my hair. However, it always takes longer to dye my hair, achieve the colour on my hair. Never mind! It is perfect for me. It does not damage my hair, the smell is not too intense. It does not fade away. The conditioner is a big help, contains anti-drying oils that moisturise the hair, keeps it shiny and nourished.

Garnier Nutrisse Permanent Hair Colour.

I use different hair colours every 4 weeks as I purchase on price as I need to cover my greys and my hair grows fast. I purchased this product fron the warehouse when they had a special and only paid $7 which attracted me to try. I purchased 2 as I like to add a little red into med brown to get the colour I used to be. I used half the brown and a third of chestnut. The smell of this product is no worse or better than all the others I have tried. This was easy to apply and thick enough so it did not drip during the curing time. The conditioner is lovely and the smell of that is really pleasant and leaves your hair really soft and shiney.( Why can't you purchase this conditioner on it's own ). The result was really good ,the coverage really even and I was well satisified with the colour.Like most colours their is a fade factor but I have learnt to use gentle shapoos as this can also affect the colour and always condition my hair with each shampoo.Would I buy this again -Yes definately however I would look for it on special and buy several next time.

Tips: Do not use abrasive shampoos -dandruff shampoos etc as this can strip the colour.

Not Really A Fan

Im not really a fan of this hair dye at all. I've tried it a few times but It does not work on my hair that well.

It comes with detailed instructions which make application very easy. The gloves are quite good.

I apply Vaseline around my hairline, neck and face to avoid staining of my skin.

You need to use 2 packs of dye if you have longer than shoulder length hair or thick hair otherwise it wont cover all your hair.

The last few times I have used this it didn't really change my colour and when it did it only lasted for a few weeks.

I don't like the smell at all, Its very strong and potent.

I wont be using this again as it made my hair feel like straw after rinsing it out.
