Did I get a dud?

I was really excited to try this as I hadn't tried an eyelid primer before and this one had good reviews. However when I went to use it for the first time I was disappointed. The tube had a very minimal amount of product in it. After swirling it around in the tube I managed to get some. I had the shade pearl, which I thought would give a nice sheen. Unfortunately it was very glittery and didn't seem to make my eyeshadow last longer or prevent it getting creased. Still wanting to try the other shades.

e.l.f Eyelid Primer

I decided to buy an eyelid primer to see if it helped my eyeshadows stand out more, last longer and have less fall out. And with this product only being $2 at Kmart, I couldn't lose.

On opening the eyelid primer, the first thing I was really disappointed to see is that there isn't really that much product in there. There is a wand for application in there that is like a lipgloss wand, but not the ton of product you see in a lipgloss.

To test if this product worked I've done one eye with eyelid primer and one without. The results were that the eye with the eyelid primer retained slightly more of the shadow over the day making that eye slightly more pigmented. Other than that I did not notice any significant differences.

I probably wouldn't bother buying this product again but might look at another primer. But I am still undecided.

Average

This is my first ever primer of any sort, and I really wanted to invest in an eyelid one since my lids get quite oily throughout the day and need something to keep the eyeshadow at bay.

This product is pretty average. I think it does a decent job at prolonging eyeshadow visibleness, but by the time you get home at night, it will definitely have dulled and faded (but this also could be contributed to my oily lids).

Another downside is the lack of actual formula in the tube. Literally not much inside, so for the normal retail price, I think it's a 50/50 on purchasing. If it's on sale, definitely get one for on the go.

Other than that, you probably might want to skip on this and find a more high quality primer, if it's within your price range.

Tips: let it set on your lids before applying your eyeshadow.

Excellent and cheap eyelid primer!

I bought this on a whim after seeing it was only one dollar, and it has amazed me with its quality. I have fairly oily eyelids and I'm used to my eyeshadow creasing and my eyeliner smudging everywhere. When I use this, it holds everything in place for hours and I don't have to worry about looking like a raccoon.

Tips: I use this over my foundation/concealer/etc and blend gently with my ring fingers. You don't need a huge amount, but it will stick to any dry patches so make sure that you moisturise properly.

Not recommended

$1 at Kmart the other week because a new formula is coming out, so I got two, gold and champagne. So my review is of the old formula.

I guess you get what you pay for, the lid of one broke as I tried to open it the first time-it split up the side but still totally usable as it's just the outer cap. The other one was fine.

They have a lip gloss type wand for application, I would prefer a little squeeze tube personally. There doesn't seem to be much product in the tube either.

The gold was too gold and shimmery for me to use as a primer- I don't usually cover my lid in such a vibrant gold colour. The champagne is a muted grey/mauve matte colour which is good as a base colour- a bit smokey, and also good on its own.

As a primer i didn't notice my eyeshadow staying on any better than without using it so I'd say it was a fail as a primer. I like the grey one colour wise so I'll probably keep using it and then keep an eye out for a nice shadow in a similar colour.

Hope the new formula is much improved on the old.

Shadow Lock Eyelid Primer

e.l.f Shadow Lock Eyelid Primer is available in 4 colours: Sheer, Champagne, Pearl & Golden. I wanted to try "Sheer" but the Kmart I went to was out of stock so I had to settle for "Pearl".

e.l.f. Shadow Lock Eyelid Primer provides a silky smooth foundation for your eye make-up and helps ordinary eye shadows to last longer and helps prevent them from creasing. The primer is packaged in a white plastic tube with silver writing and a black lid (similar in size to a slim tube of mascara) and has a colts-foot applicator.

I’ve found that for best results, the primer needs to be applied very thinly. To do this, remove the colts-foot applicator and either place a small dot of primer on each eyelid, or transfer some of the primer from the applicator and onto a finger before spreading the primer over the entire eye area (from lash line to eyebrow).

Personally, I prefer to place some of the primer on my ring finger, then gently rub my two ring fingers together to get a small amount on each before applying this to my eyelids. This ensures that a thin coat is applied and its easier to blend and quicker to dry. Allow the primer to dry completely before applying any eye shadow.

The lightweight creamy formula has a silicone-smooth feel with a soft, almost matte finish on the skin. "Pearl" comes out of the tube as a white primer with a slight shimmer but once it's blended and a light coloured eye shadow is applied over the entire area, the shimmer becomes much less noticeable.

Eye shadow definitely glides on a lot more smoothly than without a primer and eye shadow colours become more vibrant. I usually find that cheaper eye shadows collect in the crease of my (sometimes oily) eyelids but even these become longer-lasting, more intense and don't crease as much.

For a budget brand, this eye shadow primer works well and is definitely value for money.

Tips: When you think you've run out of primer, use a pair of tweezers to remove the plastic stopper around the rim of the tube. This will allow the applicator to reach in a little further and you’ll get even more product out!

Good for the price

This product is a great value for money but doesn't exactly tick all the boxes for me. It applies nicely, not took thick and cakey looking but I found when applying eyeshadow onto it, it was slightly more difficult than without the primer. This primer definitely made my eyeshadow last longer than it would have without the primer, but after a full day of wearing make up, it still did not prevent my eyeshadow from creasing.

Overall a good product and would buy again if on a budget.

Take it or leave it

I bought this of iHerb rather cheap, so I can't say I was overly disappointed in the product. This product was my introduction to eyelid primers.

It sat nicely under eyeshadow's and I did find my eye makeup didn't smudge quite as easily as it does without it. I am not a huge fan of the wand applicator - don't ask me why, I just found it kind of awkward and always ended up using my fingers to apply it easier.

Despite this, I can't say I would buy it again. Simply because, as this introduce me to eyelid primers, after this product I tried the Jordana equivalent - same price just a thicker, creamier product in a small tub that just seems to work on my skin better.

This is not a bad product, I just prefer another. It is a great product to try for the price.

Tips: For the price, it is definitely worth a go - especially if you haven't used an eyelid primer before.

Love it!

I have this in the white shade, and I use it everyday. I got it on sale for $3 at KMART and it was so worth it. It really does increase the longevity, but perhaps not for as long as I would like it to. If you want to invest in an eyeshadow primer but don't want to splash out this is the one for you

Tips: -wait for it to dry before applying
