Perfect for priming eyes for shadow

I use the shade soft ochre as an eye primer under eye shadow daily. I find the colour a good match to my nc15 skin. This does not crease on me and I find it lasts all day looking the way it did when I first applied. This products only downfall is that it can sometimes appear uneven or patchy when applied.

Not bad...

The skin on my eyes can get really dry and using this product on dry skin is a definite no-no. It grabs and emphasise any dry patches on me. But when my skin behaves, it's a great base for eyeshadow or can be pretty just on it's own. It is a bit pricey, but if you don't leave the lid off (that will dry it out) it can last a while and be worth the investment.

Great eyeshadow base

I used to think these were the bees knees but over time more affordable/readily available alternatives have become available from other brands and I have stopped buying these. I actually get a very similar result with cheaper brands. However these are still a great product and they really lock-tight once applied and create a smooth canvas for powder eyeshadows. My faves are groundwork and painterly - the first as a base for darker looks and painterly for more natural looks with lighter shades. Overall a high performing cream shadow which does not crease on my very oily eyelids and they last all day.

Great for Prolonging Eyeshadow!

I purchased the shade painterly, and being extremely pale i found that it was darker than my skin tone and make my eyelids quite orange, but that was only the first few times i used it, now i hardly notice it, but i found that you have to set it somehow, with a face powder or an eyeshadow and the tacky-ness doesn't allow for easy blending, but once you've set it it AMAZING! my eyeshadow lasts all day! sometimes when I've been extremely lazy and didn't take my makeup off the night before (NAUGHTY) its still perfect! my only thing against this was the shades, i found soft ochre was too yellow for me and i have yellow undertones, but painterly was too dark, if anyone knows of another shade thats just a skin tone base suitable for my irish girl skin let me know!

Tips: set with an eyeshadow or powder for easy blending

MAC Paint Pot - Groundworks

A MAC sales associate recommended paint pots when I asked about eye shadow primers. I have oily and medium hooded eyes so I snapped it up though it is a little pricey. I have since moved onto less pricey and better primers but still use Groundworks as a cream eye shadow as the color payoff is good. As a primer - it is very much a 'goldilocks' product for me. Too little or too much and it creased within four hours. Just the right amount and it might last 6 but only in cool weather. As other reviewers have pointed out, the packaging is good, a nice little glass pot with a sturdy rubberized screw-off lid. There is plenty in there and I don't see me finishing it any time soon. I find that it works best applied with my fingers since it warms up a little and makes it easier to blend in on the lid.

Current staple

I have suuupper oily eyelids and nothing could ever 100% prevent my eyeshadow from creasing. After buying this Paint Pot I was disappointed to learn it alone couldn't withstand my oily lids, but after having it for a year I've now finally found the best way to use it!

I have to use the NARS Pro Prime eyeshadow base underneath the Paint Pot, but neither primer will do the job on its own, so as long as I use the two products in conjunction with each other my eyeshadow literally stays crease proof all day! Normally my shadows would crease within the hour, so it's a huge improvement!

I have the shade Layin' Low, which on my fair skin is a light warm brown shade. I went to the MAC store with the intention of getting Soft Ochre but the sales assistant assured me Layin' Low was lighter and I'd love it more? It certainly is not lighter! But it's a great shade to wear if you don't feel like wearing eyeshadow - it tricks the eye in to thinking you are! But it also doesn't really change the colour of eyeshadows if you want to wear eyeshadow over it. I've since been back to MAC and have realised Soft Ochre is too light for what I'm after so I want to try Groundwork next - I understand it's still a light brown, but is more of a cooler shade.

After a year of frequent use I'm still only about 1/4 of the way through my pot, and the formula is just as creamy as it was on day one. I use my finger to apply, as the application looks patchy whenever I try to use a brush. It loses points for not making my shadow crease proof on its own, but I love how it cancels out veins/discolouration on the lid and I think it's an awesome little investment, especially if you don't have oily lids!

Tips: If it doesn't work well alone - experiment with another primer!

Paint pod

I love using this as a base for my eyes before applying the eye shadow on. It makes the shadow sit in place and it also helps layer the eye shadow for more contrast if needed. I love using this when going out because it won't move my eye shadow and it will remain until the end of the night!!!

Great eyeshadow base

I used this all of the time for an eyeshadow base as I am prone to creasing. It worked really well and ensured the eyeshadow remained crease free for the day.

Perfect eyeshadow base

It's perfect as an eyeshadow base, I use Soft Ochre and it works well with my skin tone. I use it with my fingers, I don't think it works as well when I use a brush because the heat from my fingers can warm it up. It lasts all day. The only thing I don't like about them is they dry up really quickly and I find that I can't use it all up without it drying and cracking.

Tips: Apply with fingers!

Groundwork and Indianwood

I’ve had Groundwork and Indianwood for a few years now and the products are almost as good as the day I bought them. Despite using them a lot I find them hard to use up. They have great colour pay-off and therefore you don’t need much which is a bit of a bother if you’re trying to pan (I stopped holding my breath way back).

They come in clear glass jars which have a bit of weight so I tend to leave these at home because I’m not a fan of carrying around glass packaging. I love to wear these shades on their own but unfortunately this product doesn’t hold too well on my oily lids. It begins to break up and fade by the 4th hour (with or without primer) so I’m left looking a little weird. It works better for me when I use them as a base or an eyeliner.

The paint pots have a buttery texture and over time this can change if you don’t store them properly. I think I’ve done quite well at storing them with only the edges pulling away from the glass for Groundwork but the product is still fine. I just ensure the lid is on tight and store them inside my drawer out of the sunlight. I apply the product using a clean finger to help warm the product and then press it onto my lids which dries down to almost a powder finish but without losing any of the vibrancy of the colour.

Groundwork is a neutral ash taupe and I like to use this as a base for my smokey eyes. This shade would look amazing on a lot of skintones but especially those who are of a more olive complexion.

Indianwood is a warm metallic bronze which I use to intensify my eyemakeup or use as an eyeliner. I find that Indianwood is much smoother than Groundwork so it’s easier to blend.

The only con I have about this item is hygiene. Using my fingers is probably the kind of application I hate most because you just never know what nasties are lurking about especially because it’s going on your eyes. I generally make sure not to ‘double dip’ with the same finger. I pick up enough product for both eyes so that I don’t need to go back in for that makeup application.

I bought mine from the MAC store and I don’t regret it in the sense that I have definitely got my money’s worth and that I’m still using it today. I definitely won’t be repurchasing mainly because of the lack of longevity of the product on my oily lids; had they performed better alone I probably would have considered another two.
