I was skeptical about doing my own ombre from home, previous experiences turned disaster with hair lightening from home....yellow/orange hair, hair felt like straw etc...but there was no way I could afford the hairdressers so I gave it a go.
I was absolutely stoked with how it turned out. I received numerous comments on how good my hair looked, no one could believe I did it myself at home. It was a natural blonde with no horrible brassy/yellow tones. And to top it all off my hair felt absolutely amazing! I would recommend this to anyone wanting the ombre look but not able to afford the hairdressers! I have just under the shoulder length hair and there was enough to do all of my ends plus a few streaks at the front and a couple each side. My hair was light brown colour to start off with and it came up a nice natural blonde. =)
I lighten my hair. I had a bit of regrowth showing, so I thought I would try this ombre pack. I wanted to put some highlights around my face, and try to blend my lightened ends into my regrowth without lightening all of my hair.
The dye comes in a white and silver box, with pictures on the front and on the side of the results you can expect after lightening your hair. As part of the Colorista range, this is designed to lighten your hair in preparation for adding one of L’Oreal’s washout colours.
The pack comes with an Activating Powder, Developer Cream, Lightening Cream, Colour Conditioning Shampoo, and a DIY brush. The brush is what sets this pack apart from other hair colour kits. After you have combined the lightening products, you then coat the bristles of the brush, before combining the colour onto your hair. I found this to be a very good method for applying colour to my hair. It gave a very even dispersal of colour onto the strands of my hair and allowed me to coat the hair thoroughly. The smell of the dye was strong, but not overpowering.
However, the colour result was not what I wanted at all. I left the lightener on for the recommended time, and the end result was very patchy, yellowish, and almost orange in places. My hair did not look good! There was no nice blending of colours. Instead there was a stark contrast between my regrowth, and the newly lightened strands. The dye washed out well, but my hair was very dry afterwards. The final step was to apply the conditioning shampoo, which was very rich, and went a long way towards restoring moisture to my hair.
Altogether, I found this ombre hair pack disappointing. The formula seems to be straight bleach, of which there are better, cheaper options available if you just want to lighten your hair. The comb was nice, so I will keep it and use it in future colourings. I don’t recommend this product.
