I make no bones about being a summer baby. I love the "less is less" approach that summer brings to clothing, makeup, and life in general. That being said, when the frosty days roll in, I feel a tingle of excitement about breaking out my "more is more" makeup. Think richer primers, fuller coverage foundation, and lush, rich pigmented eyeshadows, lipsticks, nail polishes and more...
So, what are some great ways to change up our makeup during the chilly months? How can we take the dull days of winter and embrace them? Check these beauties out...
Primer
Between the drier air, the wind, and the set-to-scorch heatpump, your skin can take a right battering during the colder months, which is why adding extra hydration is key to keeping it in tip top condition. Adding in layers of moisturising skincare is a great idea, as is tagging in a more hydrating primer. I've recently discoverd the Estée Lauder Futurist Aqua Brilliance Watery Glow Primer - and I'm in love. New holy grail. It's moisturising, yet light on the skin, gives a gorgeous glow, and helps make foundation look fab. Speaking of foundation...
Foundation
If you're looking to go glam during the colder months, then you can't go past a medium to full-coverage foundation to create a flawless base for the rest of your face. Not sure which foundation's for you? From Estée Lauder's Double Wear to Nars' Sheer Glow, our amazing Beauty Review community can point you in the right direction with their fab foundation reviews.
Blush
Love that glowing winter flush, but don't fancy going for a brisk walk in a park to achieve it? Fake it with a rosy blush!
Tend to stick to peachy, apricot colours during the warmer months? Winter's a great time to break out of your colour rut and try a new shade - from mauves, to plums, to deep pinks, or even a lovely lilac.
Eyeshadow
In a fit of whimsy, one bright and sunny summer's day, I decided to apply a smoky eye. I blended and layered and buffed the colour in, then washed it off. It looked overdone, and simply wrong for me to be wearing such a heavy look on such a glorious day. Since then, I have been craving the colder months, because I love playing with eyeshadows and creating the illusion of bigger, wider eyes. And while I'm meant to be low-buying eyeshadow palettes (because I would need another hundred pairs of eyes to make a dent in my current collection), Natio Celebrate, with its beautiful neutrals and hints of plum, is luring me in...
Lipstick
While you can vamp it up anytime of the year, something about the depths of winter lends itself to richly pigmented lippies in lush shades of plum, ruby red and chocolate brown, and Maybelline's SuperStay Vinyl Ink liquid lipstick range offers beautiful shades to enrich those darker days. Ditto... nail polishes.
Nail polish
During summer you can not separate me from a candy apple red, pretty pastel green or tangerine orange shade of nail polish. But in winter, I'm all about jewel tones on my tips. Favourite shade this winter? "Bahama Mama" from Essie. Simply stunning.
