How much would you spend on a discontinued nail polish?

Ladies, it may be time to raid your cupboards and drawers and hunt out those old bottles of nail polish because you may be sitting on a gold mine!

Lemmings as they like to be called or more commonly known as nail polish-obsessives are spending incredible amounts of money on nail polishes that are either discontinued or rare.

A bottle of discontinued nail polish can reach staggering prices on eBay with one bottle of the Holy Grail nail polish, Essie's Starry Night, a navy polish with silver glitter, recently being sold on eBay for $250.  Other shades such as Clarins' 230 polish, lovingly nicknamed 'Unicorn Pee' because of its burgundy to green, to gold and orange iridescent colour, which was discontinued in 2008, has been reaching prices of up to $157 new or $99 slightly used.

You would think with these crazy prices and intense interest that the cosmetic companies would be rushing to re-release these polishes or at least do a limited run, but one spokesperson for Clarins has told MailOnline that a re-run of 'Unicorn Pee' is not on the books.

Crazy? What do you think?

Wow this is simply amazing that people would pay that much for nail polish and i think the most i have paid for a discontinued product for $50 for an Urban Decay Theodore palette but to me that is a normal price for one of there products plus my cousin got it for me before she came back from America.

I have quite a few which I have had for years, can't bear to throw them out just in case! Not too sure if I have any in demand ones though and don't think I would pay so much for a used one, but never say never!

Goodness! I would never spend that much on a nail polish not even a perfume. Something else will always come along that I can fall in love with.....I think we place a bit too much value in material things these days - dont get me wrong a like a good splurge just like the next person but this is maddness!

HOLY MOLY! If only I started buying high end nail polishes ages ago, I would spend a lot for my favourite perfume but I don't know about nail polish.

I could never pay that much for nail polish! Especially because there are so many pretty colours coming out all the time anyway that I'm sure another brand would have something similar anyway. Unicorn pee cracks me up though!

Unicorn pee sounds amazing (never thought I would say that :/) but I could not justify spending that sort of money on just one bottle, however any rare bottles in my kit = $$$ lol

I would worry that I would spend all that money (Ok...I would NEVER spend that much!) and it would go gluggy or gross just after I got it!

In the days when I had a more than a few colors I didn't own any expensive well known brands of polish just some non-name brands and the quality wasn't good. Just a few months ago I bought a nice pricey bottle of non-toxic nail polish but it isn't about to be discontinued so I don't think I'm sitting on a gold mine. The two polishes in the picture are gorgeous colors shame they were discontinued. I would pick a different name for the Clarins one if the was a re-run.

Wow, thats a lot of money for old nailpolish. I have quite a few in my cupboard. Maybe thats the way to earn my millions, not Lotto..

Wow, its amazing how much people will pay to get a discontinued product. I usually just look for an alternative and if I can't find one, then I guess it was meant to be and another product will come around at a later date that I will fall in love with. This happens to me all the time lol.

Wow, I am not sure there is any nail polish colour I would pay $250 for, I guess if someone loves a colour that much....

Giddy aunt! My stunning ability for buying a polish, using it once and then moving onto the next colour that catches my eye might just end up paying off!! Awesome article :)

wow thats really interesting, i must go through all my nail polishes now because i have sooooo many that iv had since i was at high school. I have always been a hard core nail polish fan. hmmmmm i might be rich hahaha :P

Wow!! don't think i could pay that much for a nail polish, although i possibly would for my favourite perfume or eyeshadow :) will have to look in my stash now and see if i have any hidden gems :)

Wouldn't it be great to have it, just to be able to answer when people ask what you're wearing, "Oh its Unicorn Pee." hehe
