Do You Wear Mascara On Your Lower Lashes?

I have a theory: When it comes to mascara, those who wear it fall into one of two camps:

1) Those who wear it on their top and bottom lashes.

2) Those who only wear it on their top lashes and prefer to leave their lower lashes bare.

My second theory? The latter camp goes the bare lower lash route because applying mascara to that area can be nothing short of a nightmare. (Fifty points to the first person who can guess which camp I fall into.)

The thing is, I am genuinely miffed as to how people apply mascara to their lower lashes. Whenever I look at pictures of people wearing it, I see long, fluttery, gentle but bold looking lower lashes that work to emphasise the eyes and are nothing short of gorgeous looking, but when I apply it, it's nothing short of a hot mess. And trust me when I say I've tried all the tips and tricks, which include:

* Using a disposable mascara wand that's small and skinny and designed for the exact purpose of coating your lower lashes.

* Not going straight in with a loaded mascara brush, instead coating my upper lashes and then using the remnants to coat my lower lashes.

* Tilting my head down in order to keep my lashes and therefore the mascara away from my under eye area.

* Applying the mascara using the very tip of the wand.

* Holding the brush vertically and pulling the product down.

* Holding the brush horitzontally and wiggling it back and forth before pulling the wand down.

All the tips are well and good in theory, but every time I give any of the above a go I end up with lashes that look like tarantula legs and an undereye area that would look better suited on a raccoon. (Two more handy tips: before going in with mascara on your lower lashes, take a tissue and hold it under your eye area to avoid black splodges. If you forego a tissue and get a splodge of mascara on your skin, let it dry then twizzle it away with a cottonbud.)

Clearly, I have the knowledge, I have the technology, but I do not have the skill. So, for me, after much trying and failing, it's a no - I do not wear mascara on my lower lashes. Even though I yearn to.

What abouty you, my beauties? Which camp do you fall into Do you wear mascara on your lower lashes? Yes or no? And, if so, what are your tips and tricks for getting it to apply in a fail-free way? Hit up our poll and get chatting below!

I do bottom but only very lightly I think I just feel like it’s only half a job if I don’t finish it lol

Have always worn on lower lashes but often just a light coating during the day and a bit more heavier for the evening. The trick is to just gently wiggle the brush and use a smaller one so it reaches into the corners.

Love lower lash mascara. Opens my eyes up, mascara is always my go to.

Yes I do, and the main reason is that ever since mask mandates were brought in, I've wanted to make sure my eyes are emphasized. I was working in front-line customer service, so wearing a mask a lot. I have now changed jobs, but continue with the lower-lash mascara out of habit, and of course masks are now not needed in many places.

I do my top lashes first, and gently pull at my lower lashes after applying to remove any excess product, and that works well.

50/50 depends on the look I'm going for.

depends how dramatic the look is im going for

No, mascara on the lower lashes always smudges and it looks super messy

8th September, 2022

No, I am not a fan of mascara on the bottom lashes. I always find mascara gets into all the fine lines under my eyes and it is so hard to get completely cleaned off.

Top lashes only as I have never found a mascara that doesn't give me smudgy panda eyes!

Would love to but l am putting eye drops in on a fairly regular basis so it would get a bit messy for me Thanks

I just prefer the top for daytime but if I do a full on eye look I do both

5th September, 2022

Gosh no, I hate how it looks on my lower lashes and so I just leave it. I get a lot of mascara transfer anyway, and I don't want to make it look even worse.

5th September, 2022

I do both 1 and 2 depending on the day and look. I find having an old mascara brush (clean) to help give better separation. The latest trend where they tweeze the lower lashes with mascara can look good but would look funny on me since I'm not a spring chicken anymore lol.

I love this article. Certainly gave me a chuckle. I am sure you just interviewed me and I quote "I end up with lashes that look like tarantula legs and an undereye area that would look better suited on a raccoon."
