I have a theory: When it comes to mascara, those who wear it fall into one of two camps:
1) Those who wear it on their top and bottom lashes.
2) Those who only wear it on their top lashes and prefer to leave their lower lashes bare.
My second theory? The latter camp goes the bare lower lash route because applying mascara to that area can be nothing short of a nightmare. (Fifty points to the first person who can guess which camp I fall into.)
The thing is, I am genuinely miffed as to how people apply mascara to their lower lashes. Whenever I look at pictures of people wearing it, I see long, fluttery, gentle but bold looking lower lashes that work to emphasise the eyes and are nothing short of gorgeous looking, but when I apply it, it's nothing short of a hot mess. And trust me when I say I've tried all the tips and tricks, which include:
* Using a disposable mascara wand that's small and skinny and designed for the exact purpose of coating your lower lashes.
* Not going straight in with a loaded mascara brush, instead coating my upper lashes and then using the remnants to coat my lower lashes.
* Tilting my head down in order to keep my lashes and therefore the mascara away from my under eye area.
* Applying the mascara using the very tip of the wand.
* Holding the brush vertically and pulling the product down.
* Holding the brush horitzontally and wiggling it back and forth before pulling the wand down.
All the tips are well and good in theory, but every time I give any of the above a go I end up with lashes that look like tarantula legs and an undereye area that would look better suited on a raccoon. (Two more handy tips: before going in with mascara on your lower lashes, take a tissue and hold it under your eye area to avoid black splodges. If you forego a tissue and get a splodge of mascara on your skin, let it dry then twizzle it away with a cottonbud.)
Clearly, I have the knowledge, I have the technology, but I do not have the skill. So, for me, after much trying and failing, it's a no - I do not wear mascara on my lower lashes. Even though I yearn to.
