Adult Braces - Would you? Could you?

Artcle by BR Merilyn

My name is Merilyn and I was an Adult braces wearer.

I'd always hated my teeth. As a teenager, and then continuing the trend as an adult.  Frankly, I’d always thought it was a bit unfair. Why couldn’t it have been my hair I hated? My clothes? At least I could change those quite easily.

To be fair, looking back, they probably weren’t the worse set of teeth on the block, although they were to me!  I had a noticeable overbite due to some overenthusiastic thumb sucking as a child, and a couple of prominent “fangy” looking eye teeth, which, had I been born a decade or so later would have had me as a shoe in for a member of the Twilight cast.

Nowadays – (I’m now in my 40’s), you see more kids at High School with braces than without. And frankly no one bats an eyelid anymore when they meet adults with braces.

Back in the day however, braces were a novelty, an anti- fashion item that instantly branded the wearer as a geek, a loser – think Katy Perry in her  “last Friday night video. I remember my Mother asking me when I was aged about 7, after a visit to the dental nurse if I “wanted to get braces”. Of course my answer was “no”! Who in their right mind would want to set themselves up for an object of ridicule? “Oh no”, I proclaimed, "no braces for me!"

So just as an aside to all you Mothers out there…. When your child is 7 they generally have no idea of the bigger picture, (and) and sometimes (a lot of the time) you just need to say “you’re doing this” for their own good.

By the time I reached my mid 30’s I’d not grown to like them any better, I had however learnt how to smile with my mouth closed a lot of the time.  I’d seen other Adults around with a full mouth of metal braces and whilst I was full of admiration for them, I was at the time in a very senior position at work and I just didn’t feel that I could go down that track.  And then….

 Technology found Orthodontics!

A new way of teeth straightening became available. It’s called Invisalign.  Essentially instead of permanent fixed braces, the straightening is done with a series of clear aligners. which are custom made for you.  The Orthodontist does a mould of your teeth and then plans your program out based on the results that they want.  You then receive 20-30 of these clear aligners, which go on both your top and bottom teeth   Each set is slightly different and you need to change them every couple of weeks.

You need to have some ceramic small dots or “anchors’ put on some of your teeth to help with the process, and you can’t (or you’re not supposed to) eat or drink with them in so that can be a bit of a mission. However, on the upside, they’re almost completely invisible!  I generally found that people only noticed I was wearing them when I told them, that’s how clear they are.

18 months later, I was left with the smile I’d always wanted.  Even now 4 years later, I still see my smile in photos and shake my head that those gorgeous teeth are mine, it’s kind of like a person that has lost a lot of weight and still can’t believe it’s them in the mirror.

Invisalign may not be everyone, and some conditions will still need to be treated in the traditional way, but a consultation with an Orthodontist would be able to clarify what will be best for you. .  Cost wise I think  vs the traditional method Invisalign comes out pretty similar, and depending on the work you need and the length of your treatment it will cost between $8,000 - $10,000, and if that’s got you gasping, don't panic, most Dentists will let you pay it in monthly installments.

So if you are like me and hate your teeth I’d strongly encourage you to look at getting them straightened, at ANY age.  For me it was a real life changer, and I’d spend the money again in a heartbeat.

So how about it? Would you? Could you?

I had braces in my teenage years for three years and afterwards I needed to wear a metal retainer behind my bottom teeth, which is permanently on, and a plastic retainer which I wear at night, which looks exactly like the Invisalign, like a plastic mouth guard. Invisalign sounds good as you can actually take it off, so it would be easier to brush and floss your teeth ad also eat, as when I had braces it restricted the foods I could eat.

I have always wanted to get bottom braces as my bottom front teeth have all grown on top off each other other but sadly don't have money to fix it

I'm 28 and I've needed and wanted braces for about 20 years, my parents could never afford them when I was young and I have enough body image issues as it is without adding a metal mouth to the issue. My teeth these days are still crooked and I'm saving for my daughters teeth just in case hers go the same way, do while I'd love to get some for myself, I'll never be able to afford it after saving and paying for my childs. It's nice in theory to get my teeth fixed but in reality it's just a cost I'm not willing to undergo when week to week is such a struggle as it is.

I had braces on my bottom teeth - at the time my top teeth were fine. When the braces came off the bottom and I could stop wearing the retainer as much two of them basically fell over. They look terrible. Luckily no one sees them. But my top teeth aren't flash now either, mega fangs. I was offered free braces for the top because of what happened to the bottom, but I just couldn't go through it again. Invisalign sounds good, but the price not so much :)

My teeth aren't perfect, but they're not too bad.I used to hate them when I was a bit younger, but now I think that they're unique and I'm not really too bothered.so I don't think I would ever do this. I think it's great that it is an option for people who don't want a whole lot of metal in their mouth and if it makes you feel better about yourself, I would definitely say to go for it.

I'm 52 and finished my invisalign treatment in Nov2012. I had 24 months of the top aligner and 16 months with the bottom aligner. The treatment was for overbite and overjet. The good news is that my teeth now are straight for the first time in life and I feel so much more confident. It was hard as you cannot eat with the aligners (so weight loss of 6 kgs) and also very hard on my lower gums. I have definite recession on all lower teeth now which depresses me. The cost was ok but here are hidden extras. You spend money on the final retainer ($700) plus all the cleaning treatments for the aligners. Also with every new aligner expect a headache for 1-2 days while that teeth moves. But would I do it again, yes and no. it certainly wasn't easy making all the appt's when you work, and I hate people lookin in my mouth.

A friend of mine uses Invisalign, her teeth look amazing now, it has me thinking about getting them done also as my parents couldn't afford to pay for me to have braces back in the day.

Oh my god I would love Invisalign! I used to work for a dental manufacturer and went to a few dental trade shows where these were highly recommended. Unfortunately I couldn't afford them then or now for that matter. But I have seen the results and they are brilliant!

I had traditional braces when I was 13, and I'm glad I had them done. I would possibly consider adult ones if I hadn't have had those. The clear option sounds a lot nicer then the old metal ones!

If i wasn't happy with my teeth i would.

I have nice small, straight white teeth . . . thanks to my parent's health insurance when I was fifteen! Of course, I hated having braces as a kid, they hurt. And they looked pretty industrial. Now though, I take it totally for granted that I don't need to feel self-conscious about my smile. One daughter has had traditional braces with wonderful results, and the second daughter is a 'brace-face' now, but their seems to be much less suffering these days. I think this Invisalign system looks great, I wonder if they are any more comfortable than traditional appliances?

17th March, 2014

If I could afford to, yes

17th March, 2014

Well done Merilyn for sharing your story, I have always thought about braces for my bottom teeth (they are a mess) but thought oh well too late now... I might need to pop in to my dentist to have a chat now :) thank you xx

17th March, 2014

OMG yes definitely. I was supposed to get braces when I was young buy my wonderful parents couldn't afford to get me them at the time. I'm now an adult and still need braces. If I could afford it, I would totally do it, I mean you have only have one set of teeth, you may as well dazzle people with them :-)

17th March, 2014

My dentists always suggested I need braces but my parents don't see the point in them. Luckily my top teeth are reasonably straight which hides my very crooked and overcrowded bottom teeth. I may do this when I have disposable money, but that won't be for a while since I need a tooth implant and get wisdom teeth out!
