I’ve always stayed clear of dandruff shampoo as I always thought it wouldn’t suit my thick curly hair. However I was sick of after one day having a very itchy and flakey scalp. After a couple of washes with this shampoo I noticed way less flaking and definitely not as itchy. I seem to be able to go a extra day so far before needing to wash my hair. It does have a slight scent to it, smells quite clean and refreshing, nothing too strong and doesn’t linger on your hair. Can’t wait to keep using it and see further results!

This shampoo. It has a thick, almost toothpaste look and feel to it, scent is super mild but nice, I need to shampoo my hair twice for it to feel like it's actually cleaning it(applies to any shampoo I use) After shampoo my hair feels very stripped and I just know if I put comb through it right now it will KNOT be good ( I'm clearly up too early haha ) . But I definitely know that it's clean. You will however need a conditioner after wards x
I have used this when I have dandruff and only when I have dandruff as once cleared up I return to my normal shampoo. Definitely works.
This is a great shampoo thats not too expensive. I found it hasn't gotten rid of the dandruff completely but cleans the scalp for a few more days compared to regular shampoo. It has a great scent which is quite fresh so leaves the hair smelling nice for the following days. The small bottle lasts a long time as it lathers really well with just a small amount used.
This shampoo is suitable for mild dandruff or to maintain your anti fungal routine. It's not suitable for moderate-severe seborrheic dermatitis which needs stronger products. This shampoo has 2 sulphates in it, so it's extremely foamy as a result and works pretty similar to a clarifying shampoo after just one wash. You need to follow up with a very good conditioner or it can cause your hair to become dry and brittle like it did to mine. The fragrance is quite strong and it also contains itchy Ms. The antifungal formulation changed in 2020. It used to contain 1% zinc pyrithione. It now contains the anti-fungal called 'piroctone olamine'. As someone who has long term seborrheic dermatitis and can only use anti-fungal shampoos, in my experience piroctone olamine does not work nearly as well as zinc pyrithione to maintain a clear scalp once the seborrheic dermatitis is properly treated.
Head and Shoulders is of course the OG in supermarket brand dandruff control. I’ve always had dandruff, and I know that H&S truly works to ease the irritation and flakiness.
This regime is much the same as all their other products. The active ingredient of pyrithione zinc works well. The smell is fresh and clean. It is affordable.
Personally I only used this on my scalp because it is quite drying on the ends.
Would I use it again? Probably. But if you can afford salon products such as my favourite Matrix Biolage anti-dandruff shampoo, then that will work on the scalp while also being gentle on the hair.
I was excited to receive the Head and Shoulders combo to review as I've struggled over the last few years with a breakout here and there of the dreaded white flakes! Given that I wear a black uniform five or six days a week it's always really noticeable when my scalp is flakey. I like the size of the shampoo and the fact that the shampoo lid faces up while the conditioner faces down makes them nice and easy to distinguish in the shower.
I managed to use the shampoo twice before my review was due and to be honest if I wasn't reviewing it I probably would have waited another day, maybe two before washing again. The shampoo itself startled me on first use, it's much thicker than a traditional shampoo, almost more like a conditioner texture. Having said that, it lathered nicely and was super easy to massage into my scalp. It's a pale blue sort of pearly texture and really does lather up. I was a little concerned that the amount of lather would take a whole to rinse out but it rinsed away quite nicely. I didn't really like the smell, it's subtle but definitely noticeable and I have much nicer smelling options I prefer over this smell! My hair felt slightly tangled after rinsing and I definitely wouldn't skip the conditioner stage. Although tangled my hair felt clean with no noticeable scalp tingling or anything weird to report!
Tips: Use the conditioner!
This product ticks all the boxes but, unfortunately, it wasn't suitable for me due to my use of hair colourant. My hair is blue and I take care to extend my colour as long as I can. So, watching the heavy swirls of blue wash down the drain when rinsing this out was disheartening. But, geez talk about squeaky clean! Straight after rinsing, it felt different. No crunchy, plastic feeling and it penetrated through my hair to the scalp which most shampoo can't do. The smell is non-offensive and if I didn't have to maintain a regime to keep my hair colour consistent, I would use this and will recommend this to any of my itchy, flaky scalp comrades. It works, from the first wash. Great price, Clean scalp, happy hair. You should definitely consider it on your next Supermarket run :)
Tips: Extend your shampoo past the edges of your hair and to your forehead and sides of face and your skin will feel clean and fresh too! Bonus!
Comes in traditional Head and Shoulders vaguely pharmaceutical looking bottle. The smell of this light bluey greeny shampoo is so much nicer than the usual tarry chemical smell of anti dandruff shampoos on the market and it lathers really well. The first time I used it I had a really itchy scalp later that day but I think I may have used to much and not rinsed enough. The second day I used less and no issues. I only got to use this twice before my review.so I haven’t noticed huge reduction in my white specs yet, but I will definitely continue use.
Tips: A little goes a long way folks!
The Head and Shoulders Clean & Balanced Shampoo comes in the traditional Head and Shoulders blue and white packaging. The product itself is a white colour and flows in a good consistency. It has an inoffensive fruity smell, not overpowering but fresh.
While I only had a short period of time to trial this product, I found it did eliminate my itchy scalp and minimise the dandruff.
It left my hair feeling soft and full of moisture, and did not appear tp strip any colour from my heavily colour treated hair.
I didn't have to use a lot of product, although I did (as I always do) two shampoos as I feel the first cuts through any greasiness and the second cleans. As a supermaket prodcut with price point accordingly, it would seem to be an affordable option that lasts.
Tips: You do not need to use a lot of product at a time to achieve clean hair.
