Garnier Olia

It comes in quite a large box and has a few different bottles inside. I find it odd that the mixing bottle comes empty. The product was easy to mix once instructions had been read and the applicator bottle is a good shape and size for ease of use. The gloves were ok, they were an ok fit on my hands. It also had a generous amount of conditioning cream for after use

The product had a lovely scent unlike other hair dyes I have used. It was also quite easy to remove from my skin.

Overall the product was quite easy to use, and left my hair feeling in good condition.

Tips: choose your colour carefully

Garnier Olia

I was so pleased to be picked to trial Garnier Olia, as I really wanted to find a hair colour that didn't contain ammonia etc. I chose Intense Red, as I liked the shade it promised to be, and I thought, why not do something radical rather than safe..

I was very disappointed in the product unfortunately, and I really didn't want to have to write that... But I'll start with the positives. I thought the information on the website and it's interactive tools were fantastic. The packaging of the product is very eye catching and modern and sophisticated. The pack contains very good information and is user-friendly.

Inside the pack is everything you need to colour your hair and they also are packaged in unique, trendy packaging. If I could make a suggestion I would ask for a second pair of gloves - 1 to apply the colour, and another pair for when you rinse the colour out, I'll explain why soon.

The product is easy to use, it has a very slight scent, which is good, as it's not overpowering, and is much more pleasant than other products that can overwhelm with the smell of chemicals. I got some of the product on my skin (round my hairline and my ears) and it was easy to remove with a little shampoo on a tissue. The design of the application bottle makes it easy to hold in your hand as you apply.

But that is where my positives stop.. The colour developed well in my hair, I waited the suggested 30 mins and followed all the instructions to the letter, I ensured I had distributed the colour evenly and massaged it through at the end. I don't have many grey hairs, but do have some at my temples and a few at my part, so I made sure I coloured those well. I have coloured my hair previously, so I wasn't expecting the shade to change remarkably. Well... you couldn't tell I had coloured it at all... very disappointing. The product claims 100% grey coverage, this was not true.. they were still there. Apart from a bit of colour on top there was none at all anywhere else. In rinsing the product the colour just kept washing out, it never slowed down, there was colour everywhere in the shower and unfortunately all over my towel as well. Other products I have used I have rinsed with warm water until the water runs clear... this is all I did, but it never ran clear, there was just SO much colour..

My hands were dyed, my fingernails a mess... so I wasn't happy.

My supermarket retails the product at $16.99, which I personally wouldn't normally pay for hair colour anyway, but I certainly wouldn't pay it for this one, and I am unlikely to purchase it again.

Tips: Have a second pair of gloves for rinsing your hair

Loved it!

When this arrived I was super excited! No ammonia meant no burning nostrils and yucky after dye smell in my hair!

The packaging looks great - it has that high end look but for a fraction of the price. I really liked the shape of the application bottle because it is something different to the normal at home dye bottles. I found it easy to hold and the product came out of it with no trouble at all. I hated the gloves though! I have little hands to they were far too big on me. I think latex ones would work better and I actually ended up swapping for some half way through the application process. I thought the push out hole on the box was a great idea - I didn't have to worry about damaging my bench tops with excess dye from the bottle =)

The dye itself smelt great! It was like using a nice smelling conditioner in my hair, not a dye. I would probably buy this for that reason alone! And when I went to wipe off some stray dye from my forehead (opps!), it came off with just a wipe - no scrubbing required which was a total bonus! The conditioner is fab too! Such a lovely scent and there is plenty for a few uses.

The coverage was really good in my hair. I don't have any greys yet (touch wood!) so I can't comment on that particular claim but my hair feels so soft and is super shiny since I dyed it. I would absolutely use this product again!

Disappointing result

Being an at-home colour queen, I was really excited to be able to test drive this new Garnier product. My natural colour is 90% grey, so a hair dye that promises to cover the grey is of utmost importance to me. I usually dye my hair every 4-6 weeks to keep the grey under control, and because I dye it a dark brown the grey regrowth is really obvious. For the trial, I opted to try the Dark Beige Blonde, expecting the actual colour of my hair to be a light golden brown (as per the colour chart on the box). Instead, after using the Garnier Olia, the colour of my hair hasn't changed from the dark brown, and the coverage of grey was really disappointing. The grey roots were still visible when I washed the dye out! For this reason alone, I would not use this product again.

What I did like about the product: 1. No strong smell - the smell of the dye while applying was subtle and pleasant. 2. The formulation - it was creamy and thick. 3. It did leave my hair feeling softer and smoother than usual after dying.

What I didn't like: 1. The bottle - found the shape of the bottle difficult to control, especially once I had dye on the gloves, it made the bottle quite slippery. 2. The lack of grey coverage.

Thanks BR for the opportunity to trial this product, however it's now back to my old faithful, Garnier Nutrisse!

Tips: The instruction leaflet advises leaving the product in your hair for 30 minutes development time, but I would suggest it needs to stay in longer, perhaps 40 minutes.

Love it ~

When I first got the box, I was really surprised at how big it was compared to other hair colouring product packaging. The design for the packaging was well thought-out.

I had to re-bleach my roots before using this as my natural hair colour is black. However, since I asked a friend to do it for me she evened up dying my ends as well as my root and my hair became very dry and I was scared to try this product over it. This did a very good job at toning my hair, the colours were very even and it was very easy to apply. I have shoulder length hair and there was still about half the bottle of product left over when I was done. The colour developed fast for me, around 10-15 minutes or so. I really like how the conditioner or "hair treatment" came in a tube so you can actually re-use it, unlike other ones that come in packages. It also helps make your hair soft after the colouring. After blow-drying you can see the vibrancy of the colour, so shiny!

The only thing I didn't like about this was the mixing bottle. It got hard to hold onto it to squeeze the product out because it gets slippery.

Faded very fast after a few days and turns yellowy. However, purple shampoo does a good job at getting rid of the yellow tones.

Overall, I'm very happy with this dye. I would use it again, price is very reasonable since all other box dyes are around the same price.

Tips: Squeeze onto your hands first then apply the product into your hair for easier application.

frosty chestnut

I found this product was easy to use, the instrucents were clear. The bottle you blended the hair dye in was a great shape, good size for your hands. It had along tip which made it easy to put the syr through your hair. I found the colour didnt quite look like i thought it would. I had stripped my hair colour so it was a light colour, the red didnt really show through alot. In the light it gets a shimmer of red. Loved the conditioner you use afterwards, hair felt great. Have used these dyes before and had good results.

4.15 Iced Chocolate

I like to think of myself as some what of a "DIY colour technician" having been dying my hair myself for a good 10 or so years at home myself. Over the past 1 1/2 years though I found myself shying away from drugstore/supermarket dyes in favour of salon dyes which gave me the ability to choose my developer strength and better control the amount of dye I required so trying out Garnia Olia was both exciting and a little bit nerve-wracking! To add to it I was saying goodbye to purple & blue tresses and hello to a more neutral chocolate brown. I have to admit I didn't have the highest expectations of this product to begin with so it was pleasantly surprising to find I actually really liked it and would happily use it again! It didn't have the typical chemical smell/veil that usually accompanies hair dyes, it applied smoothly but I have to admit that I mixed it in a tinting bowl and applied it with a tinting brush which is just personal preference as I feel it ensures better coverage. I feel like the fact the application bottle is empty and requires you to add the developer and colour is a bit of unnecessary packaging, however, on the flip-side it's great if you only are touching up your hair, I feel it enables you to mix up half of the product and keep the rest for next time which most box dyes don't really allow. After rinsing the dye and applying the supplied conditioner my hair was really shiny, smelt pleasant and didn't maintain a terrible freshly dyed smell plus in the two weeks since dying my locks, I've been impressed with how well the colour has lasted and how shiny my hair has remained.

Tips: I always recommend investing in a tinting bowl and brush. You are able to mix your dye to a smooth consistency easily and it helps with smooth, even application! Also turn the shower down a tad when it comes to washing your hair, your dye job will last a bit longer.

Not much color appearance.

I have natural dark hair and the color couldnt show up. I left it on for nearly an hour and after wash i have a very very light smoky brown. Im not surprised because it happens to me with most other hair dye products, unless i leave it on for 2-3hours. I want to do a normal review so i left it on as suggested time but next time i will leave it longer.

Garnier Olia Dark Blonde

I was excited to trial this product as I have seen it at the supermarket and was attracted to the packaging and liked that it was ammonia free however I tend to stick with brands that I have used before so had not tried it until now. Dark blonde is the shade that I usually colour my hair and Garnier Olia dark blonde came out the colour that I was expecting. I also liked that there was no harsh smell like many other hair dyes.

I found the box stand idea to be fiddly and in the end I just put the mix up container on the basin bench and I disliked that you had to combine the two colour mixes in a separate container (the home dyes I have used in the past you add one mix to the other) so I felt like this was an extra unneeded step which took more time. Although the applicator container looked really nice I found it hard to grip and it had a sharp part on the nozzle which made it more difficult to apply although the sharp part could have been down to bad luck when I snapped off the seal. I also found the gloves to be on the smaller size, great if you have small hands but if you have big hands like me not ideal.

The colour was quite runny but I did find that it went on quite well (other than the container issues) but if you had long hair you would defiantly need two packets as I have just below shoulder length fine hair and used all of the product up. It didn't cover a couple of grey hairs that I have but to be fair they are quite stubborn and the last hair dye also missed them.

The conditioner was ok. I used quite a bit of it, more than what they suggested but felt like my hair needed the extra. I liked how they provide enough conditioner for a few uses.

For the price I wouldn't use this product again but maybe I would be tempted if it was on sale. Overall it did an ok job, it coloured my hair the shade that I was after but I found it to be more difficult to mix and use than other hair dyes that I have used in the past.

Tips: If you have long or thick hair use two boxes. Don't worry about using the box stand, much more useful to use the box for the empty containers and gloves when you are done with them.

No harsh chemical smell

I trialed this product in the Soft Black shade (slightly darker than my natural hair colour). I dye my hair mainly to cover up greys (or as I like to call 'very very light blonde' hairs) and to make my hair more vibrant and shiny.

Since the hair dye is ammonia free there was no harsh smell, but a nice floral scent instead. This was a big plus for me. The dye was also easy to use, and very gentle (no burning or itching). The colour was perfect and it also made my hair look really healthy and covered up all the grey. A bonus was the gloves - much smaller (and therefore easier to use) than other brands.

However, I wasn't a fan of the bottle - it was very hard to hold (especially once I had dye on my gloves) and I even dropped it at one stage (luckily onto a towel on the floor). It was also very runny and dripped quite a bit. It also took a lot of rinsing to get all the product out (water is run clear), but I didn't have any brown marks on my towel afterwards.

I feel like the colour has faded quicker than ammonia based dyes, but I guess that is the cost of not using harsh chemicals.

Tips: If you have short hair, don't be tempted to use all the mixture as it is quite runny and will drip everywhere.
