Delicious scent

First off, I need to let you know that I don't wash my dry hair too often, so I was only able to use it once in the trial period. I'm making a mental note to come back and update this review once I've used it a few more times, as one of the things I LOVED about this product was the multi-tasking nature of the product.

While I put my name down to try a hair mask, I was pleased to find on the tub it gave information on how to use it as a conditioner, a hair mask, or as a leave-in treatment. I'm trying to streamline my beauty products, so this was a big plus in my book.

I don't think I've ever done a hair mask before, so this was how I tried the product. As a bonus, it only said to leave it in for one minute. I left it in for much longer, but it was good to know I didn't need to have a super lengthy shower - or worse, two showers - to get the benefits of the product.

The tub is a nice big sturdy thing with plenty of product that is easy to scoop out - much better than those conditioner containers that leave you struggling to get the last of the product out, then in a quandary as to how to wash it properly for recycling.

The product smelt delicious. I'm not a fan of overly strong fragrances, so I was nervous about that, but this one smelt good, which made it a pleasure to rub into my hair.

The big question - did I notice a difference in my hair? To be honest, I didn't. Maybe this is because I'm a wash-and-go type girl, never spending long drying and styling my hair, or maybe I was expecting too much, but I didn't notice a difference to when I used straight conditioner. This may be because my hair wasn't too dry at the time, so I'll be interested to see how I go tonight, when I'm going to use it again having just coloured my hair.

At this point, while it's a decent conditioning product, with a lovely smell and great packaging, it's not a must-have. Watch this space for an update when I've got through more of the tub!

Tips: You can skip the conditioner and use this on it's own if you want to save some $$ while getting the benefits!

My hair is so soft and silky smooth!

Well, this is most definitely my new hair care must have! I love love love this product! It smells lovely, is nice and thick and the packaging is nicely designed. It's an easy screw top pottle so it's easy to use even when your hands are wet from the shower.

I'm so excited that the mainstream brands are starting to get on the natural and environmentally friendly bandwagon. This formulation is just as good, if not better, than Garnier's other, not so pure, formulations.

I tried the product is all of the three ways listed on the back: - as a conditioner (I really like this, it felt like a really rich conditioner and left my hair feeling smooth and silky) - as a mask (I got the same result from using this as a mask as I did using it as a conditioner, so given the extra time involved in using a mask, I'm not as convinced by this one) - a leave in (this is my favourite - I used this instead of my usual argan oil hair product and this is so so so much better! My usually frizzy hair became lovely waves. Someone asked me if my hair naturally did that and they were shocked when I told them it did. Also, a little goes a long way).

All in all, I love this product and I'd definitely 100% recommend to anyone.

Tips: Use a small amount as a leave in and your hair will feel soft and silky and any frizz will disappear

Still frizzy

I love how Garnier seems committed to using natural ingredients and recyclable packing but I’m afraid I can’t love this product.

It’s a huge tub of warm nutty smelling goodness but it’s done nothing really to help my fluffy and frizzy flyaways. I have long thin hair and I was expecting more of a dense cream than this is. The tub says you can use it wet and dry which is a bonus so you don’t need two products and it can even be used as a mask. I tried all three ways but still the same lack lustre result. New supermarket hair buys for me tend to be more miss than hit, I should go back to Elvive oil-in-cream which never fails.

So what to do now with this big tub? My eleven year old with curly locks will probably have to use this tub up. Shame as it’s very economical for the size and would have enjoyed using it over probably a good year judging by the size.

The best

I really love this mask and purchased in different flavors. This one smells truly amazing. I love that you can use this as a conditioner and leave in treatment. Both ways t works great for me and my airs feel super soft and easy to brush.

Garnier Macadamia

I decided to try this as I enjoyed trialling the banana mask. This is equally conditioning and leaves your hair feeling soft. The scent has a nutty smell to it almost exotic but isn't overpowering. Wash and condition your hair first thus allowing the conditioner to work leaving your hair soft and bouncy.

You can use this three ways as a leave in, a mask or a quick conditioner but I find doing my hair first in the shower is adequate.

Tips: Buy while on special and try others in the range.

So soft

I don’t usually buy Garnier hair products but after seeing it recommended on here and in need of a new mask, I was keen to give the range a go. Even more so when I saw it on special at Countdown for $6! For such a huge tub, what a bargain. I decided to try the Macadamia version first as the description on the tub seemed best suited to my hair type. It can be used a few different ways but so far I have only used it as a mask, left in for an hour. I try to use once a week or at least once a fortnight and I adore the results. My hair is left feeling super soft, feeling and looking nourished, shiny and with less frizz and flyaways. Basically everything I want and expect from a mask but at a bargain price. Oh and it smells amazing! Can’t wait to try the other variations and also keen to try just as a daily conditioner. ..

Yummy!

My first reaction when I "met" this product is that it is huge tub. It is in a ice cream like tub, which plays on the whole food thing. It is a really eye catching design. It definitely brightens up the shelf in my shower. I always use a hair masks a conditioner. My hair is super dry and coarse so anything that promises to smooth and moisturise unruly hair...I'm in! I use a hair mask as a conditioner all the time. It seems like a more nourishing effective way to condition my hair. I have no issues with products weighing my hair down since it is so fluffy and coarse. As you would expect of a mask, this mask is very thick and creamy. It makes it easy to apply a thick coating to my freshly shampood hair. It has a subtle fragrance. Which is a bit different to what I would expect from Garnier Fructis. I have always thought Garnier Fruictis had strong sweet fruity fragrances. This mask seem like a more grown up hair product. I left it on my hair for 5 mins, and rinsed it out. I was really impressed with the results. My hair felt softer and less frizzy. It left a really nice subtle fragrance in my hair. I have a feeling the condition of my hair will continue to improve after every use. I look forward to using this product on a regular basis. And I would definitely repurchase again....although that wont be for a while.....since the tub is so big!

Macadamia Hair Food

The product smells very nice upon opening. The scent reminds me of shea butter products. It had a nice thick ’n‘ creamy consistency, i think perfect for a hair mask.

I enjoyed using it both as a 1) hair mask and 2) a conditioner as it both left me with light and soft hair for three days, together with a nice lingering fragrance that wasn’t too strong for me. My fine black hair after drying felt soft, very light and hence, straight and easy to comb.

I enjoyed trialling it out as a hair mask, as It’s not something i often use. I feel the next time i use it, i should try it leave it in longer and see what happens.

The second time; in which i used it as a conditioner, i realised the smell wasn’t as strong and nutty as the first time. But maybe because i got so use to the smell already? Or that i didn’t use enough this time?

The product was easy to apply. It glides on easily onto wet hair. Didn’t feel too heavy nor slimy for me which makes it easy and quick to wash off, without the feeling of having to rinse again.

However, i wasn’t too fond of using it as a leave-in hair treatment, as the consistency i feel was too thick and heavy for a leave-in. I think i used too much than I should have.

There wasn’t any applicators that came with the product, nor any instructions on how much to apply, which means I had to dig into it with my hands a few times trying to guess an appropriate amount for the first time i used it, and trying not to wet the inside of the container at the same time.

Overall, I prefer to use it as a mask or conditioner. It would have been better if it gave my dry hair a little bit more hydration though... as it didn’t end up as smooth as i would have expected It to. However, im willing to try out other fragrances of hair food in this line in the future.

Tips: Store it in a dry place.

Use very little if using as a leave-in. Can brush it in using a comb for more even application.

A versatile, economical haircare product

I’ve tested out Garnier Fructis Macadamia Hair Food quite thoroughly on my hair now and used it in the three different ways suggested - as a conditioner, a hair mask and a leave-in treatment. I’ll go into more detail a bit later on in this review about these three uses.

Clearly, with three haircare uses, this product is versatile and economical. You get quite a lot of it, in a decent-sized tub. The tub looks like a big pottle of frozen yoghurt or ice cream! What a novel way to package a hair ‘food’ product! It looks good enough to eat and has a kind of yoghurt-like texture to it too (don’t worry, no haircare product was eaten for the purpose of this review!). The actual smell of it though didn’t blow me away. It’s pleasant enough – it smells a bit like caramel or something sweet enough to eat – but perhaps it’s just not the kind of smell I want to plaster all over my hair. But I didn’t hate the smell as it’s not offensive or overpowering. But a big tick for me is that it’s mostly natural, with no parabens/artificial colours etc. Lovely, natural ingredients make up 98% of it, including macadamia seed oil, coconut oil, almond oil, etc.

Now for the three ways you can use this product:

1) LEAVE-IN TREATMENT: I tried using this as a leave-in on dry hair a couple of times, but it just felt too heavy in my hair and I wanted to rinse it out straight away - not ‘leave it in’ at all! It felt too concentrated as a leave-in. The other thing I found was that I couldn’t really rub it in evenly on to dry hair: it was hard to apply and ended up in my hair in patches, which felt heavy and greasy.

2) HAIR MASK: this was a better option for me as I found it easier to apply to wet hair. Using it as a mask also suited me better because I could rinse it out after applying it (you only need to leave it in for one minute).

3) CONDITIONER: WOW! My hair loves this stuff when I just use it as a simple conditioner! It leaves my hair feeling silkier and more hydrated. This is my favourite way to use this product and I’ll continue to use it as a conditioner.

All things considered, this Smoothing Macadamia Hair Food gets four kisses from me. I didn’t like using it as a leave-in treatment. However, it does a decent job as a mask or conditioner. And you know it must be gentle and kind on your hair when it contains so many gorgeous natural ingredients.

It’s fair to say that, in the past, I’ve not been that complimentary of Garnier products, as is obvious in a previous review I’ve done on this site. But clearly I need to try out a few more Garnier products as I reckon they’re on to a good thing with this Hair Food! I’m keen to try out some of the other ‘flavours’ in this range now. I’ll just have to hold back on the temptation to eat any of them!!

Tips: You don’t need to use a lot of this, it’s quite a concentrated product so a little seems to go a long way.

It's good!

I wasn't too sure what to expect of this product and I can't say I am too familiar with the brand but first impressions were pretty good.

The container is HUGE, like double what I usually get in a hair mask tub. It can be a little bulky to open in the shower and I can imagine water would get in pretty easily (I have a bath shower so I can just walk out of the water to open the tub).

I wasn't a fan of the smell. The combination of perfume-y fragrance mixed with macadamia doesn't do it for me but I can see how it could be enjoyable for others. My hair doesn't smell like that afterwards so I'm fine with it.

I used this product with my usual hair routine and swapped out the mask for this one. It worked really well and my hair was visibly less frizzy which is a pretty big deal for me. I don't typically have dry hair but it certainly did feel hydrating. It didn't make my hair as soft as my usual mask. The one problem with this mask is that it made my scalp itchy. This is not unusual for me but if you have a sensitive scalp, I would recommend trying a sample first if you can since you get so much product in the tub and it would be a shame to see it go to waste. It would have been nice to see a bit more vibrancy in my hair colour but that is not the intention of this product.

I also tried this product as a conditioner which means applying to the ends of my hair. It worked well but it didn't feel like anything special and again, my current conditioner makes my hair feel softer.

I was super skeptical about using this as a leave-in treatment as the packaging suggests but I did it for the sake of the review. Surprisingly, I liked it. It was a good way to reduce my frizziness without having the product on my scalp.

Overall, the best results from this product came from using it as a mask. It was a shame it makes my scalp itchy but using the product in conjunction with my coconut oil mixture works for me to reduce the itching that I typically get from most hair cleaning products (I add a couple of drops of the made-up mixture to my shampoo or mask - 9mL fractionated coconut oil and a couple drops each of tee tree and rosemary essential oils). I will continue to use this product, but I am doubtful I would purchase it when it runs out only because I love my regular mask.

Tips: To save some money on conditioners and masks, you can alternate using conditioner and shampoo. So, one hair wash use conditioner and for the next wash use mask and so on.
