I’ve been using this since I got it which has been about a week now and I can say it a great wash to use, it left my face feeling clean and fresh, it had a minty fresh (cool) feel to my skin after and it smells nice too. The results aren’t immediate and I haven’t seen any improvement to the blackheads them self but the redness around them has reduced, it’s also helping eliminate the excess oils on my face. I did have a small break out but I am due for that time of the month but I’ve had no other irritation from it during other times I’ve washed my face with it. I also have really sensitive skin so I think it’s a pretty good wash for me since I can’t use much, that being said I can’t speak on behalf of all people with sensitive skin as everyone’s skin types are different. Overall I will keep using this however I will not be buying it as garnier tests on animals

I have used charcoal washes before. I was skeptical to try this because in the past I feel like they leave my face feeling stiff and dry. It was certainly the opposite with this product. The gel was light and runny yet still foamed up a lot so you dont have to use too much of it. Unfortunately my bottle broke in transit so the pump didnt work, unlikely this will be the case with yours if buying from a shop. I love the fresh smell and you can still smell it on your skin long after you use it. This makes me feel fresh and clean. As I have only used it for a week I am unsure on how much it helped with blackheads but I havent had one all week! My skin felt clean yet hydrated. I highly recommend this cleanser as an affordable option compared to some high end expensive charcoal scrubs on the market.
Tips: Rub your hands together to make it foam before applying to your face.
I have never used Garnier cleansers, other than their excellent micellar water. I have combination skin but one of my major skin concerns has always been the blackheads clogging my nose, centre of my forehead, and around my mouth.
The sleek black pump bottle was surprisingly cool to see when I opened the BR package. The black colour is appropriate because it clearly denotes the charcoal ingredient, and the targeted black head removal action.
What I didn't really like was seeing the jet-black colour of the gel wash itself. It did lather into a white foam, but something about the black colour made me unwilling to put it on my skin. Maybe this is just me being weird though.
I love a good lather, but this gel wash only had minimal foamy goodness. This is understandable considering it is actually a gel formula. I couldn't help but this it would be easier to just choose: is it a gel or a foaming face wash? Why is there a need for it to be both?
The immediate tingling sensation when it hit my face was very unsettling. I have never - NEVER - had a bad reaction to face wash before, so I was seriously surprised and alarmed to feel the prickly tingly-ness. It didn't leave me with any visible damage, so maybe it's meant to feel like this? I know with charcoal and mud masques I often get the same feeling, but only after the masque has been applied for a few minutes - not immediately!
Ultimately I wanted to do justice to this product review, so I continued using it despite my dismay. And after a week of use every evening, I can confirm that my blackheads have been cleansed out of my skin. My nose was the area I felt most self-conscious of, so I felt really good knowing this had been cleared up.
But would I use it again? Based on the weird black gel/foam formula and the feeling against my skin, no. A once-a-week charcoal or mud masque which is only applied on my problem areas will suffice for my personal beauty regime.
Tips: This would NOT be good for sensitive skin!
SO FAR this seems to be a winner! Realistically, I’ve only used it 3-4 times since receiving it... BUT It foams reeaaaaal good and has a peppermint cold feel to it which I’m guessing is the salicylic acid? It’s like brushing your teeth on your face= Clean clean clean! If you have dry skin, this will probably make it worse. If you have oily skin? This is your new husband. Super good size, and has a pump top which explains itself. But the actual product? It says it gets rid of black heads...but not sure if this is true. Can anything actually get rid of black heads other than proper treatment? It probably decreases sebum production which would result in fewer blackheads. I don’t know. All in all, it’s a good face wash and I rate it.
This product comes in a sleek back bottle with a pump. Which is good because I love me a pump.
The colour takes a bit of getting used to as it is a grey/black but then again it's charcoal so you know.
It comes out like a thin gel. It's great when you apply it as it makes your face feel really fresh as it has a hint of mint in it so it is great to use in the shower.
It cleaned my face really well and my breakouts and blackheads since i've started using it have definitely reduced.
Tips: If you suffer from blackheads give it a try.
Have used this for over a week now. It seems to work quite well - my skin is definitely clearing up and my blackheads have decreased in size a little. I only use this once at night time as I feel like it would be too drying for my skin type.
Would recommend if you have oily/combination skin and have blackheads you want to get rid of!
Tips: Use once a day to avoid stripping your skin of natural oils.
I was quite excited to get on this trial team, because even though I've had blackheads on my nose for years I never really bothered targeting them. I was a little worried that it would irritate my sensitive skin since this kind of product tends to be a bit harsh but luckily it's fine.
This comes in a convenient pump bottle which can be locked if you want to take it travelling. I find that one full pump is too much so only use half a pump each time. The product is a grey gel which turns foamy when I rub my hands together.
It's got quite a strong fragrance kind of like a bathroom cleaner smell. Normally I don't mind fragrance but this was too much for my liking. It does seem to clean my face thoroughly, leaving it feeling lighter and refreshed. I haven't noticed any changes to my blackheads but think I'll have to use it for a couple weeks before noticing any improvements. My face felt kind of cool afterwards, like this had a cooling effect. Not sure if this was my skin reacting to it or if this is actually cooling, but it's nice for the hotter months.
Overall a nice foamy cleanser that does it's job, the only thing I don't like is the smell but that's just personal preference.
I very spekical of any product that claims to reduce blackheads. I’ve tried countless products- low and high end. I’ve tried herbal remedies too. This gel wash comes in a black packaging which I think it’s great, definitely makes it easier to find in amongst the face creams that are all in white bottles. I lock that this gel wash can locked with a twist of the pump. Very handy to keep kids out of it! I proceeded with caution when I applied this gel wash. The charcoal gel is a very light black colour, almost grey and when rubbed together it turns white. The gel isn’t super light when applied but it’s also not very heavy and doesn’t feel like it’s restricting your face. I could feel the gel wash activate on my face and once washed off, my face felt smooth and lifted. After 8 hours I could see little pimples appearing around and on my nose but they disappeared the next day after I used this gel wash. I’ve got sensitive skin and I after using this product daily for about one week, I have not experienced any reactions. I have definitely noticed that my blackheads have reduced in size and some has disappeared completely.
Tips: Use daily for best results
I like how you can just turn the pump on the top to lock the pump, rather than pushing the pump all the way down and then turning it.
It comes out like a grey gel and turns into a white colour foam when you massage it into your skin. It smells exactly like the face scrub version and I feel like my face feels nice and clean afterwards.
I didn’t notice much of a change in the appearance of blackheads or blemishes after using it but there might be if I used it for longer
The Garnier Pure Active Charcoal Gel Wash comes in a nice bottle with a pump. My pump was slightly hard to use which is always awkward in the shower reaching up to shelf etc. Furthermore, products with pumps are never easy to just chuck in your toilet bag and take away due to leakage. The other option is to put some in a smaller pottle for trips away but some of us can't be bothered with that and it's often just more plastic.
I think the packaging is eye catching. The black bottle represents the charcoal product and makes the label really stand out. Not many products have black with facial products so it is a point of difference on the grocery shelf. Like other Garnier products, I like how they include a little bit of info of a small study they have already done on the product. It not only makes the product seem more thoroughly tested, but also ensures that it will likely benefit the consumers skin too.
On application the product is like a clear gel and very smooth and luxurious to apply. It foams up after about 10-15 seconds of massaging which is good as it ensures I'm actually giving my face a decent wash instead of rushing. When rinsing off your skin feels incredibly soft, like it has been exfoliated, however, it almost feels like it leaves a small residue on the skin....which leads me to my next negative point.
Unfortunately, something about this product has caused my skin to break out (I also appreciate my breakout could be completely unrelated to this product). I have even gotten whiteheads around my nose where I only ever had blackheads. I think it has actually improved the size and number of blackheads....but if it leads to breakouts it is pointless. I have finally cleared my skin out over the last 3 months after years of mild acne by removing cow's milk from my diet. It could be a coincidence this product has made me skin have a small breakout. I will have a break from it and try again in a few weeks as if it wasn't for the breakout I really like everything else the Garnier Pure Active Charcoal Gel Wash has to offer.
Would I recommend this to friends? Yes, unless they have acne-prone skin in which I would recommend with caution (but I do appreciate so much more goes into acne than just external products e.g. diet, hormones, genetics, stress etc.).
I would like to think this product wasn't the sole reason for my breakout, and will try again once my skin has calmed down.
