Maybelline Brow Satin

I found the Maybelline Brow Satin to work okay - it recommends outlining with the pencil and 'colouring in' with the powder fill but I didn't find this technique worked too well for me as the powder filler was too thick and made my eyebrows look too chunky and not as defined as I like them. The lead on the pencil part broke quite easily so I ended up wasting a bit and overall the combo only lasted barely a quarter of the time a normal pencil would last. I wouldn't buy this again for these reasons. On the other hand the colour was nice and idea itself quite cool - the sponge end did work quite well for blending the insides of brows near nose but thats about it.

Disappointed

I had really high hopes for this product but I found that the pigmentation and colour pay off just wasn't there. I found that I had to press quite hard to get the product to show up in my eyebrows and then once I added the powder I found that it made my eyebrows look quite intense and very dense looking. The only area of my brows where I felt like it worked was on my tails to make them even but that was about it. I probably won't use this product again just due to the fact it didn't achieve my desired brow style as easily as other products I already own.

A Brow Disappointment

I had been really looking forward to trying out the Maybelline Brow Satin in Medium Brown after searching for a good brow product for months. Unfortunately I was very disappointed by this product - it just didn't work well for my brows at all!

The idea is a good one - a double-ended product with a very thin pencil at one end and a powder applied using small sponge at the other. Unfortunately, I found the pencil far too thin and hard to create natural-looking brows easily, and I found the powder very difficult to disperse using the sponge at the other end. The overall looks I was left with after trying this product were always harsh, artificial, and unnatural looking! The colours was perfect for my skin tone and hair colour - but I found it was just far too difficult to achieve the look I wanted.

My search for the perfect brow product continues!

Average, try something else.

Having used this up a few months ago, I figured I should get around to writing a review. I brought this as maybelline usually have quite decent brow products for the price. I quite liked this "Brow Satin" product, the product itself was nice to use and was a great size to give a natural - yet flawless brow, was easy to build up, without overdoing it. I found you didn't get much product and it was a nice colour match. I can't say I used what was meant to be the big sale feature and point of difference with this product - the sponge tip at the end. It is a solid sponge that smudges your eyebrow product in. It would help make my brows look fuller, but easily made my brows look to thick and ridiculous. Wouldn't purchase this again, but happy to have tried it.

Not for me

When BR offered to send me brow products I was all over it like... Cara Delevigne on brows. Although I feel far too old to be saying brows on fleek I still like to search for that product to bring me closer to perfection. Or at least closer to being OK. My brows although having nice shape are quite light in colour so I like to have something that adds a bit of colour and hold to my brows. I can't claim the success of the shape of my brows to myself though as I'm far too lazy and get them waxed every 5 - 6 weeks. I snapped this product up in the shade dark blonde, which I really like.

This brow product is so different from anything else that I have tried. At one end is a retractable gel type pencil (not as creamy as the Brow Precise) and at the other a wee sponge with powder on it. The powder is in the lid so each time you put the lid on more product gets dispensed onto the sponge. To be honest I had to go onto Youtube to figure out how to use it. Maybelline have some great videos on there with how to use it. So the idea is that you first use the pencil part to lightly fill in your brows then put the powder on top and it sticks to the penciled in parts. I found it weird to have a brow pencil without a spoolie included, but a pencil only has two ends I suppose!

I found this a bit strange to use but it did create a nice natural look. The pencil is nice and small so makes for easy application of small strokes. My one big problem with this product was I got a wee bit of fall out with the powder end and as it was so pigmented that even if I tiny bit dropped onto your face it is quite hard to flick off without ending up with a line of colour across my face (especially when I do my brows after doing the rest of my face makeup). I also found that the sponge didn't make for a particularly accurate way of applying the powder either. It meant I had to clean up a wee bit around the edges. I did like it though and I think it makes for a easy and natural looking way of filling in your brows if you had sparse parts. For me though I found the two steps too much work just to add colour as I felt they still weren't set in place. I would much rather use just a creamy pencil, or a brow powder by itself.

Interesting product to try out, but it won't be one that gets added to my everyday routine. I do think this could be great for those that are filling in some more sparse parts though.

Very true, and they are quite affordable too which is an added bonus! I didn't even think about how my brow 'type' would affect my review. We are quite opposite in that sense too, you have lighter brows, I have darker etc etc

It's quite cool though that there is something for everyone in these products. You are right though, I think this isn't one for thinner browed ladies. Maybe there wasn't enough pencil product on my little brows to hold the product.

Interesting Review. I didnt experience any fall out, and maybe because my brows are quite thick the sponge seemed to be a great size for them

Maybelline brow pencil with powder

This is a very slick little pencil that comes with enclosed lids at both ends - one end has a sponge tip with brow powder inside the cap and the other end has a propelling pencil that you can rotate. I like the way the powder end requires you to unscrew it to reveal a sponge tip which is dipped in the powder the sits inside the lid. The pencil end rotates and the lid clicks nicely in place. I found the pencil very effective for lightly shaping and outlining my eye brows but I found the powder tip a bit tricky. I like my eye brows to look natural and it was hard to get the right amount of powder without making my brows look overdone. So I didn’t really use the powder but used the pencil to ‘feather’ my brows. Like the other brow pencils I have tried, it smudges if you wipe your brows at the gym so you need to reapply. I found also that it didn’t last the day and did need to be reapplied to maintain the colour and shape. Pricewise I feel it is value for money and would use again even though I don’t use the powder as the pencil is a reasonably good product for outlining and creating shape and if you use it to ‘feather’ the gaps, it works okay.

Tips: Use the pencil and use light feather strokes to fill gaps.

On the fence

I've been using this pencil every day for over a week now, and I'm still undecided as to whether I like it...

At first glance this looks like any other wind up brow pencil or eyeliner, but on the other end it has a sponge applicator that dabs into a small pot of powder concealed in the lid. It's a very clever design.

The pencil end worked fine; it was quite a soft light pencil, which is great if you don't want harsh lines, but I found it was almost too soft and I had to use quite a lot of product before I could see any change at all. The product wore down quite quickly as well and I feel as though this would probably run out after a month or two, which is not very long compared to the products I would normally use. However, I am usually a wax and powder girl, so I enjoyed having the precision of a fine pencil nib. It's also great that it winds up, so you don't have to worry about sharpening.

The powder end was a very good idea in theory; it can set the pencil lines you have drawn and fill in any gaps, however I found that it was hard to get very much powder on the sponge.

I feel like this is a good time to say that that the pencil didn't come with any packaging or detailed instructions, just a picture of which order o use which end, so I searched YouTube and found an official Mabelline video showing how to use this product. The sponge end it in a point (imagine a very tiny half beauty blender) and the video said to use the edge of the sponge on the main part of your brow, and the point on the thin ends... again good in theory, but I found that it was only the tip that held enough product to apply to my eyebrows. When it worked, I was happy with the results, but when it didn't, I found I was simply smudging around the pen and making gaps more visible, rather then covering them up.

I was using the shade 'Dark Blonde' as I have gone from dark brown to blonde over the last 6 months, and have so far continued to use dark brown eyebrow colour. My eyebrows are a natural brown colour, but sparse enough that I thought a different coloured product could change the appearance, but I didn't actually notice too much of a difference with the dark blonde, slightly more 'subtle' but still gives a brown finish.

The longevity of the product was great, I didn't experience any smudging throughout the day and they looked as good as they did first thing in the morning when I went to wash my face at night.

A negative is that I would have to apply something else over the top to hold my eyebrows in place (like applying a small amount of hair spray) which I don't have to do with my wax and powder.

Overall this product hasn't won me over or totally put me off. I think this is a product I would throw in my handbag as a back up if I didn't have time to do my eyebrows in the morning.

Tips: Check YouTube for tips on how to use, because it has quite a unique design and I think it would take a bit of practice to get this to work well for you.

An eyebrow kit in a pencil!

I was super exited to be asked to trial this. It is literally an eyebrow kit in pencil form. On one end is a wind up gel pencil to outline your brows and the other end is a fill in powder. This seems like perfection has finally been invented for people on the run. The eyebrow kits I have used take time and preciseness. This cuts all that in half and make it far less effortless.

There is a clear lid on the gel pencil end and a brown screw top lid at the powder end. This keeps them protected from breaking or gathering dust and dirt. I chose the darkest brown that was available because it allows me to achieve the bold brows I like.

The gel pencil is very thin which allows me to get a sharp and precise line. It winds up which means that I don't have to continuously sharpen. That's a big tick already. The pencil is quite waxy feeling but it means that I only have to press lightly to get a good line. The powder is a whole other level. It's like a pump action applicator with a sponge smudger tip. You press in and out the applicator to allow the powder to come to the surface. This is where it got tricky for me and resulted in the three stars. It's very hard to apply and to get even. It doesn't look very natural nor bold. It looks just like powder in my sparse brows. It was very awkward to keep the powder at the tip constantly with having to pump it up and down. It wasn't easy to apply that side at all.

Once I got my brows to the place I wanted them I gave them a run for its money. I wore my brows done in this to town for the day and found that on a gusty day, if I don't put a staying powder on the powder blows out leaving me with a line and faint fill in. Lucky for me I took it with me to reapply should the need arise.

Verdict: I love the idea of this pencil and the gel pencil. The only thing I don't like is the powder applicator and the fact that it doesn't stay put in wind, even with a setting powder. I would buy it just to use the pencil if not anything else. Worth the money? For the pencil on it's own definitely! I love this to line my brows with.

Tips: Use light strokes and build up. It's very intense colouring and can look overdone if used too heavy handed.

Maybelline Brow Satin - Review

I found this on special when I needed a new brow pencil, and it's actually quite impressive for a 'drugstore' brand!

When I use this I use it to outline my brows and the Chi Chi Brow Pomade to fill them in. The powder end is not very useful (for me at least) as it's quite messy to use but the pencil end is perfect as it goes on easily, nice formula not too hard or easy to blend, and lasts all day easily.

Because it is a twist up pencil you never need to sharpen it, which is great for me however I do find if you drop it the pencil breaks and can fall out easily.

One thing I don't like is the range of colours, although it works for me some people just need a different sort of colour. This isn't too much of an issue as this product is 'drugstore', but I thought I'd still mention that.

I will for sure be buying this again, it's really easy to use and definitely a dupe for some more expensive brow pencils I've tried in the past.

Tips: Use a spoolie brush to blend it out for a really natural look!

Maybelline Brow Satin

First brow pencil I purchased, and bought it again two times after. Relatively easy to use, although it did take a couple tries until I was happy with how it looked. At times it looks over-dramatic with the colour I used (dark brown) as it is very pigmented. The package said to use the pencil end to outline the brows and the powder end to fill it in. This did not work for me as the outline stood out more which made it look like I did not fill in my brows. Therefore I use the pencil to both outline and fill and then lightly dab on the powder, which works well for me. The pencil goes on smoothly but it breaks off easily which is unfortunate. Overall, a reasonably good product.

Tips: Use a spoolie and don't press hard :)
