The Power of Nail Polish

If you thought lipstick would be the most popular cosmetic product, up until last year you'd have been right.  For the first time ever, a girl's best friend has been replaced.  The nail industry has overtaken lipstick sales.

When you think about it, both the lips and tips industries offer quite similar things.  It's easy to find lipsticks and nail polishes to fit into any budget.  There's a shade and finish out there for everyone.  Both are quick and easy pick me ups.  And both products are easy to collect.  Look at me - I bite my nails and prefer lipgloss, but I still have 40 nail polishes and 51 lipsticks.

But why has the nail industry boomed so dramatically in the last year?  It probably has something to do with the number of nail bars popping up - even in small towns you can now get your nails done, whether they be falsies or your own.

And we all know the beauty industry is recession proof right?  Even in the dreariest of times, people will pay to look good and feel better. In the UK nail bars are opeing more stores than any other industry - where huge supermarkets are closing stores, chain nail bars are thriving.  And it's a pattern you can see the world over, including here in New Zealand.

But it's not just nail services that are boosting the nail business.  New technologies in nail polish, from at home gel kits, to new oxygenated polishes are keeping the consumers happy.  And of course, the internet is literally bursting with nail art tutorials and how tos.  And how about the, some may say shameless, pop culture tie ins?  From OPIs 50 Shades of Grey collection to Victoria Beckham's new line for Nails Inc, there's no doubtig the power of celebrity endorsement or fandom.  (I'm still hoping the Modern Family range of Nicole by OPI will make it to our shores!) Even 3D printing has had an impact on the nail business - did you know you can design and print your own nail wraps?!

Now we're pretty confident lipstick makers don't need to be shaking in their boots - as if we'd ever turn our backs on a good lippy, but is it a sign that women are now leading with their hands? Is a well presented hand now as important as a well perfected face?

What do you spend more money on?  Your lips or your tips? Do you regularly get your nails done, and are they more important to you than the perfect pout?  If you had to choose just one product for the rest of your life, what would it be?  Lipstick or Nail Polish?

I remember a friend from back at school age ( a few years back LOL) who used to always experiment with nail decorating as she had 4 mannequin hands to practice on. This was before the wraps were a big thing here and she use to put sellotape on the nails to add decorations to nails then cut to shape. She always felt that was no good when she had broke a nail and wanted long nails so she then put a couple of pieces of liteweight cardboard(its strong but really thin) on double sided tape then covered it over the top with sellotape. She then cut it out to match the artificial nails and then stuck it onto her nails and painted and decorated it. They looked really good and it was not something you could tell the difference between without touching it and there was a different finish. So I grew up experimenting with nail colours and style of nail reflecting what we were doing or our moods and even when I went through a nail biting stage when my friend was overseas , when she came back I stopped and we went back to our fun. It was a great catchup girls day of facials and manicures and lots of laughs and every so often a few drinks with alot of fun reminiscing and sharing of great stories... Thanks for reminding me and taking this trip down memory lane..

Lips for me! I very rarely wear nailpolish actually - I have a couple of small bottles of organic nailpolish at home (bought in a bulk lot of makeup) and I have only tried 1 colour but on my toes!! I don't really like wearing it on my fingernails as it looks terrible when it comes off, I can't be bothered with touchups and even putting it on is a hassle, as soon as I have done it, I need to pee or something and am wearing something with a zip or get it all over my clothes hahaha.

If I had to choose 1 product it would definitely be lippy!!!

Nails. I'd never pay for my nails to be done voluntarily but I must always have polished nails. I've never been one for a standout lip, as long as my face is done and my mascaras on thats all i need. So I do my nails always.

I have a huge collection of nail polishes - about 120 bottles compared to 2 lipsticks and a gloss stick lol I love trying different things with nail polishes and so dabble in nail art.

I can't wear polish at work so I definately spend more on lippy these days.

Nail polish definitely ... I love doing nail art on myself as well as others.

Tips for me! I have about 80 nail polishes! I love painting my nails :)

Nail polish wins for me! I always paint my own nails every week. I colour coordinate with my clothes. I've never had false nails as mine are strong.

I love both lippy and nail polish. My nails go through phases of being amazingly awesome and then one will break then it's all down hill from there. When they are looking good I will use a bright vibrant colour but when they are not so great I will use a nice subtle shade.

Up until last year it was nail polish, but the tables have turned since I've been exploring the brights for lips this season...or maybe it's that I just can't find the time to keep my nails looking lovely. I have heaps of nail polish, and all sorts of colours, and I have to say that when a lady has manicured and polished nails it screams elegance to me!

I definitely spend more on lippy's than nail products. My nails are really weak and nail polish chips off really quickly so I get annoyed and don't bother too much. I have near on 50 lippy's now and I can't stop myself buying them either haha!

I definitely spend more money on lippy. Here's why - If I love a lippy color I'm more willing to splurge, lippy is quick and easy and I'm more likely to apply it more often than nail polish, nail polishes are difficult to pan off and dry out so when it comes to a purchasing a color I go for cheaper ones (I'll splurge on a nail treatments and top and base coats though). I think the main reason why nail polish has seen a surge is because nail colors are really cheap and cheaper than most lipsticks, so you can collect them more easily but costs do add up.

I'm definitely a nails girl. Though I do love lippy also. I don't paint my nails as much as I would like to but that's because I have to literally do nothing for about 2 hours after so I don't bugger them & I don't get the time for that very often. I'd really like to get acrylics again but I cannot afford it the moment. I've been playing with small amount of nail art as I love it.

I must admit I only get my nails done if I've been gifted a beauty voucher and last year I happened to be gifted 3 so that was really nice. However I do really get into my polishes more then lipsticks. I can't remember when I last brought a Lippie and can't really put it on properly as I have a crocked top lip. I do however wear lip balm. Back to polishes. I'm into just painting my nails and my daughter who's 5 has been my inspiration for keeping up with polishing as she loves nail colours. I feel more satisfied with a pot of nail polish then a Lippie. You can lots of wear out of a pot of polish and they're easy to do a no brainer and can be pretty cheap for a really nice paint. This year I haven't been able to nail nude I just found the neon pastels so now and love them on my toes and tips. It makes me feel feminine and slightly dressed without going over board. People comment as I don't do anything new but I have started the mix up which I've seen lately that is having 1 nail different colour to the rest of the nails. Simple I know but some people I know wouldn't had tried or seen this. Especially in a neon pastel lol. Nails win over Lippie. My pout is important but I ignore it for my nails.

I loooove having my nails painted... I have never been to a nail bar or had someone else do my nails... I prefer to keep the money and do it myself. I've been told have long nail beds and I love growing my nails long so they would be ideal for nail art! I would looove to print my own nail wraps too!
