The BEST Way To Care For Powder Products!

The MVP of the cosmetic world has got to be powder products. Not only do they help to add colour and dimension to our face, not to mention set our base and stop it from falling off our face, they're also the longest lasting product, with the expiry date of most powder products sitting at around the eighteen month to two year mark. What stops powder products from going bad for so long? Simply that, unlike their creamier cosmetic friends, they don't contain a whole lot of water - or any water at all - which means they're less likely to grow a bunch of greebies. However, that doesn't mean they're infallible. If we want to keep them as good as possible for as long as possible there's a few things we can do.

The biggie? Keep your powder cosmetics out of your bathroom. Humidity will turn powder products into a hot mess, making them cakey and introducing water which, when combined with a warm and moist environment, can see bacteria multiply quickly.

Another simple tip, and one that feels oh so obvious, is to keep the compacts they come in closed when they're not in use. Again, this will work to stop any nasties infiltrating.

Ever seen a strange looking film bloom upon your powder products? That's called hardpan, and it's caused by the oils on your skin transferring to your powder products. The best way to avoid hardpan is to do your best to keep oils from touching the powder product. So, if you like to use your fingers when applying powder products, wash your hands before going in. If you prefer to use a brush for your eyeshadow, blush, bronzer and highlighter, then make sure you're either regularly washing your brush, or using a fresh brush before applying.

Lastly, if you're travelling it's a good idea to pop a cotton ball in between the makeup and mirror of your compact. That way if the product gets bounced around, the cotton ball can absorb the juddering and stop it from breaking into a million unputbacktogetherable pieces.

So, do tell... Are you careful with your powder products? Do you do your best to take good care of them? And, if not, will you start showing them so love now? Get chatting below!

I do keep my make up in the bathroom, that will have to change now, thanks Kellie, great tip. I do keep the lids closed, and the cotton ball, what a great idea!

Great idea to put cotton wool inside the compact when travelling! I’ve had a favourite face powder shatter and it is just devastating.

I'm good at following this advice, but I need to throw my powder products out and get new ones, just because they've been open for ages.

Gosh, I didn't really think of powders having an expiration date at all. I figure if they still look and smell and work okay... but I guess greeblies aren't always visible! I hate to think how old some of the products are. Thanks for the nudge. And the tip about the cotton ball. Brilliant.

I’ve had a few shadow compacts (especially the ones that have like 4 shades together in one pan) smash up taking away on holiday or off to an event such a shame..will definitely try that cotton ball trick.

The cotton ball tip ! that sounds fantastic. Nothing worse than your favourite eye shadow blusher or highlight shattering
