So here I am trawling the internet for no reason in particular, 12 tabs open, trying to wind down.  And I see the headline; "I'll never buy shampoo again, Baking Soda saved my hair."  Yeah, my mind isn't going to shut down anytime soon!

Often on the BR forum members swap recipes for face masks and share home remedies for a variety of beauty issues, from coconut oil for split ends (and about a squillion other things) to Listerine for your feet.  To be honest I never thought much of the work involved, I just kind of thought, oh yeah, that'd be handy if I ran out of x, y or z.  But to purposefully make what I can grab easily from the supermarket or beauty department?  This is a concept that's quite alien to me when I break it down.

You need to buy ingredients, mix ingredients, find something to store the ingredients in.  And then there's things like the smell - a lot of home remedies call for things like egg, beer, vinegar.  And never have I gravitated to a shampoo with 'eau de egg'.

So beauty DIY-ers, I want to know - is making your own 'beauty products' really quick and easy?  Does it work out cheaper, more economical or even easier than grabbing a bottle or tube from the store?  And do the results really compare?

Hmm, I am not really that great at making my own products, but every time I see an article about homemade remedies I must admit I feel really inspired. That often falls by the wayside though if I don't have the ingredients in my pantry! I have made a couple of bath treatments in the past - one time I was due for surgery and had a cold (they weren't going to operate if I was ill) so I was desperate to get better so I found a bath treatment using Epsom salts, baking soda and ginger. Wow - it worked beautifully, so I am an absolute convert as far as those are concerned! :)

I tried to egg-wash my hair once! It felt awful and I swear I nearly scrambled it in the hot water of the shower!

Nope. Never made any products and I don't think I plan to anytime soon. Just too busy doing other things.

I would love to try some simple recipes but I've never done anything like this before.

Yes from face scrubs, butter bars, soaps, bath products, scrubs, lip products, candles, creams and lotions. It's certainly sometimes easier just to grab a product at the store tho..

Some things are quick and easy, e.g coconut oil requires no mixing with other ingredients. However, other things do require more effort. I like to make scrubs and masks, and although I do like making my own products it is time consuming which is why I don't do it often. If I had more spare time I would do it regularly, as homemade products have a short shelf life so you can't really make big batches.

I love making sugar scrubs but I also like to upcycle half used 'dying' makeup. Oh and I've made bath bombs a couple times, that was so fun

I know its easy to make things like scrubs! But when it comes down to it I think its soo much easier to just buy. Would love to make my own if I had the time. Heard of some amazing diy coffee scrubs and egg white face masks!!

I totally will do it, just if I have the things I need at the time I will opt for the quickest version. But I still do olive oil for my hair when I need to and egg whites on my face when my peel ain't cutting it.

Wow listerine on feet? I will have to google that to see what that is for :) I have my moments where I make face or hair masks and they are pretty easy and straight forward, the thing i dislike about them is they are more smellier and more messier than what you buy from the shop already made. Yes its cheaper to make your own but I like to opt for the ready made version when I can :)

I make the odd thing, but usually only enough to use once, because it's too much of a faff to have to store and keep things that will likely go off fairly quickly! My favourite one to make is a 'chocolate' face-mask (I found the recipe on a few blogs), which has cocoa, honey and milk in it. It's really moisturising and smells (and tastes... not saying how I know that haha) really good. :)

Every Christmas I make citrus or vanilla oatmeal grown sugar body scrubs for friends and family! They all love then and all year I wish I had some for me! Maddness. Time to get the glass jars out..

I've never made my own products. I received a home made face scrub from a lovely BR lady which smelt divine and felt great on my skin

I don't mix things but I;ve used egg white face pack for around 40 years, and I wash my hair with white vinegar. Over the years Ive used witch hazel and rose water for skin toning, honey for hair conditioning and skin moisturising, oatmeal face packs, tumeric for removing peach fuzz, sugar and sea salt for skin exfolliants, epsom salts for bathing in..and probably heaps more I've forgotten about! I just like trying things...

At first I clicked that I didn't, but then I remembered my coffee scrub!

I used to make my own when I was younger - I don't know why it seemed easier then - maybe I just had more time!
