Behind the Brand - Skinfood

4 February, 2014 - 10:59pm by - First Lady | 8 Comments

Skinfood is proud of its New Zealand roots.  They're a company that create beauty products that harness the raw, authentic goodness of nature.  Like a well-balanced diet, they've designed a range of products that will delight your skin's tastebuds and what's better is you'll never be told off for overindulging.

We caught up with Alex Badger to find out more!

Tell us a bit about yourself

I would describe myself as driven, energetic and approachable. I love a good book, a cup of coffee (latte), travelling, great company and a good challenge.

What is your background?  How long have you been in the Beauty Industry?

I have been in the beauty industry for one year now. It has been a refreshing and exciting change from my previous five years spent in the liquor industry and I have really enjoyed learning the ropes and meeting other people from within the industry.

How did the idea to launch your own Brand come about?

Skinfood was developed over ten years ago in response to consumer demands for more natural skin care products especially one without parabens. Accessibility and affordable quality where key drivers during the product and brand development which has been further refined over time. Since then the range has expanded and is now available in most supermarkets nationwide

What is the philosophy behind your brand?  What does it stand for?

The essence of Skinfood is natural, New Zealand made, goodness. Nature makes complex systems seems simple and in all its abundance it effortlessly creates balance – what better source to draw from.

To many people, you would have their dream job, what is the best thing about working for such a gorgeous beauty brand?

I love working for a dynamic and authentic brand that stands for affordable quality. I think the best thing is talking to people who genuinely love our products as much as I do.

What is your best selling product?

The best-selling product in the Skinfood range is our Cleans All, closely followed by Nourishing Moisturiser (together they offer a complete face care routine).

Skinfood’s Body Butter is an on-going favourite – and throughout the summer months, Skinfood fans love our Tanning Moisturiser.

What is it about this product that makes it so popular?

Skinfood offers premium quality, yet affordable skincare inspired by nature, and made with the finest food and natural-based ingredients.

It leaves skin feeling light, clean and fresh without removing needed moisture, smells divine and is suitable for a wide range of skin types.

What’s your favourite product from your range?

I love our Body Butter. It is a rich, luxurious, all over body cream that smells of citrus and mango.

I’m also a big fan of our four new Skinfood Body Bars – Mud & Honey, Nourishing, Cleansing and Exfoliating.

The all-new Skinfood Body Bars are formulated with natural ingredients to leave your skin feeling nourished, cleansed and revitalised.

What advice would you give to someone reading this who would like to do what you’ve done?

Work hard, be passionate and use initiative. Choose an industry/product/career that you love

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced?

The biggest challenge I have faced in my role at Skinfood has been transitioning the brand from its evolution stage into new look packaging and branding. I’ve called it a revolution and a refresh but it has given the brand and company new energy and opportunities and has been well worth it.

What does a normal day for you consist of?

I usually try and do some form of exercise (gym or walk) in the morning before work. I arrive at the office around 8.30am and clear through my emails before starting on the days projects. This could include anything from new product development, advertising campaigns, sales meetings or attending meetings and events.

How do you relax?

I love catching up with friends over a glass of wine or heading away to the beach on weekends.

Can you give us a hint about what is next for Skinfood?

Skinfood has a big year planned for 2014 - There will be new products, new look marketing campaigns alongside international exposure – we can’t wait!

I'm really liking these Behind the Brand segments!! Ka Pai Beauty Review!!! Skinfood is a brand I always see at the supermarket but never do I have the confidence to veer away from what I know... perhaps next week I will!

I really like their cleanser and body butter. Affordable and made from good quality ingredients that you can FEEL. And they smell nice too. I have sensitive skin, but this stuff works really well on it and doesn't irritate.

Love the Skinfood range. I bought the light moisturiser a month ago and it keeps my oily skin hydrated nicely with minimal breakouts. Need to try that Mud Mask!

Skinfood's Nourishing Moisturiser is just lovely. I use this all the time....it is fantastic under make up and also acts as a primer making my foundation go on really smoothly and with a perfect finish. I love it! I also love that the ingredients are all natural and that it is affordable.

I haven't used any of their products but I've read rave reviews about their mud masque.

I love the nourishing moisturiser, super thick but not too heavy. Really good for those with dry skin like myself.
