OPI Shatter Review

The effect of this polish looks really cool, especially on a contrasting under coat. But I foun it such a hassle to apply, the undercoat has to be really dry before you can apply the shatter or the under coat will crack. I did not like the bumpy feeling and have to also apply a few top coats aswell.

Tips: It looks awesome once its done right, allow time for coats to dry inbetween layers.

Pretty in the bottle....

So I was given an OPI shatter by the Katy Perry line I think? It's called Gold Shatter. Firstly, just like with all OPI nail polish, the packaging is great, and the brush is really good too. However, for me, that's where all the pros end. The formula didn't apply easily, and it's just hard to use in general. The texture was bumpy and grainy, kind of like a glitter polish, and because the one I have seems like gold glitter in the bottle anyway, you couldn't really see the standout shatter effect. It just looked like badly applied glitter on top of a base coat. At around $25, I would say to give this OPI range a miss. Don't get me wrong - I have other OPI nail polish that I absolutely love, but this range just didn't do it for me.

OPI Shatter - Don't go there

I bought this a long time ago when it first came out as I was all about trying the latest nail trends at the time. I got this in navy, and silver. Why I got those colours specifically I have no idea. I still have the Silver one but I think it is about to go in the rubbish once I have finished writing this review as I don't see me ever wearing it again. Such a shame considering how expensive OPI nail polish can be.

As with usual OPI nail polishes the packaging is lovely. The brush itself is quite flat which I find great to apply nail polish as you can get the polish across the whole nail quite quickly and easily. I love with the shatters it has a plastic cover on the lid showing the crackled effect so I know it is the shatter polish from the top rather than my usual silver polish.

This product can be quite difficult to apply as you need to get one even coat on. You only have one chance as it begins to crackle as soon as it is on the nail and starts drying. This can be quite difficult but due to the crackle effect it can hide a lot of mistakes as it is supposed to look somewhat messy. I don't like my nail not feeling smooth as I think it makes me feel like my nails are messy rather than elegant/classy. This also hides cracks at the tips of your nails for a while too due to the multiple colours/textures going on. I find the Silver one looks particularly good over a black polish.

I feel like this was a fad that I am glad is no longer popular (was it actually ever?). But can still be fun for a night out or special occasion.

p.s. I had to rate it highly on 'did it do what it said it would' because it does, i just won't use it again or tell anyone else to buy it.

Shudder

Shatter Nail Polish, from what i remember this was a phase in the nail world maybe 2-3 years ago, which is still lingering around, although not as popular as it once was.

No surprises that i jumped on this bandwagon, and purchased the OPI shatter in both black and silver because those were the colors i thought would be most versatile.

They way these nail polishes work is you paint your nails as normal with your colour coats, and then place a reasonably thin layer of shatter on top, and while you wait for it to dry, it literally shatters before your eyes.

Like all OPI's this shatter range comes in the same weighted clear bottles, with the OPI logo imprinted on the front. The handle is plastic and black, and the brush is applies nail polish smoothly and evenly, but the brush is nothing special.

I found the formula on this nail polish to be good on one level, but no so good on the other. It was good because the colour was pigmented, and so you only needed to use one coat, which is good because you can only use one coat for the shatter effect. The formula let me down because i find the nail polishes a bit thicker than the regular OPI. This means at times, the coat was way to thick to create a good shatter, and it also meant these nail polishes dried up really fast. I think they dried up in around 6 months, which i think is ridiculous.

Overall, a nice idea to create a new nail look, but small imperfections, and a change in trends, as well as personal preferences ensure i wont be repurchasing this product again.

Not so shattering

I purchased these as I heard so much hype about the OPI shatter! Unfortunately they are too over rated!

I have small nails and I think I only got 2 lots of shatter per hand. I was dissapointed. OPI has such a great reputation but I found these polish's usless. would love for them to improve the formula

opi shatter

OPI's Shatter nail polish is foolproof to apply and the look is exactly as advertized, which doesn't happen very often! I loved Black Shatter so much I went back and bought several other colors. I had so much fun experimenting and I got loads of compliments! Why the low rating then? Well, within about 2 months they all dried out! completely useless! I was so disappointed and had to throw them out. I suppose I would buy again if I was planning to use it all in a short period of time.

This product works perfectly until it doesn't work at all.

OPI Shatter

I dont really like shatter so im not sure if that effects my opinion of this product but I found it hard to use. It went kind of chalky looking when dry and pooled in areas more then others. I have black, so a tricky colour to use but for me it just didnt work! I paid $8 at The Warehouse so not full price but still I wont use it again. The bottle like all OPI is a nice design and very sturdy.

Tips: Try blowing on them, to help it set a bit better.

Okay..

I have it in black and it takes some practise to get it right. You need to make sure you have enough polish on the brush to cover the entire nail in 3 brush strokes because it dries really fast and will start cracking almost immediately. If you need to go back and dip into the bottle halfway through painting a single nail it would've already dried and you will muck up the nail as half of it will be a thin coat and another half a thick coat. This becomes a problem when you've used up most of the bottle and need to really reach around to get polish on the brush.

The consistency of this nailpolish is a bit thin/watery/runny for my liking and what annoyed me at the start was I either did not have enough polish on my brush (which left me with a streaky light grey finish which kind-of shattered but looked poorly done) or too much polish on my brush (leaving a thick messy look which wouldn't even shatter).

After a few months the polish started to become gloopy on the brush and I just stopped using it.

Tips: You need to make sure to have enough polish on the brush- not too much as it wont shatter and not too little because you can only do a single coat of this, otherwise you'll be painting over the shatter and it will just end up looking messy.

Not pretty

It simply does not do it's job, I tried multiple times but the shatter just did not work on my nails, it looks thick and messy and unattractive.

Meh - good for a feature finger

I brought this just after it got released and thought it was the coolest thing ever! It got me addicted to painting my nails again, it worked great the first few times but it quickly became thick and lumpy.

Once it changed its consistency it didn't apply well or 'shatter' as well as it did on day one. I would understand this happening over time but more like a few months into the product not the first few weeks. I enjoyed it whilst it lasted and I did re-purchase another one in a silver shade which I often used as a feature finger design but the same thing happened and I ended up tossing it.

Overall it was fun to play with but at the price I would recommend waiting for it to go on sale or if they happen to have a mini size go for that instead. I wont be repurchasing.
