Changing your hair colour with the season? Tips for radical hair colour changes!

Article by BR Georgiana

Unless you have just split with your guy (not to worry, there is plenty of fish in the sea!) or started a brand new job, you might want a radical hair colour change just to celebrate a change in season. But, before taking such a big step, please take the time to read the following tips. They might come in handy.

Is choosing a new shade more difficult than you imagined?
You know you want a dramatic change, but you are still not sure if to go lighter or darker. The safe thing to do is opt for a lighter shade because, if you don’t really like the result, you can change it easier than you would a darker colour, in which case you might also need a little bleaching.

Make sure your expectations are not too big
You are probably obsessed with the stare-worthy hair colour of a Victoria’s Secret model or an A-lister. The good news is lucious locks happen to us all, at least once in life. The bad news is each woman’s hair is different (think texture, natural colour, previous chemical hair treatments), so chances you get the exact same jaw-dropping shade as a picture are fifty-fifty.

You can first take a test to understand how a certain colour looks on you. Dye one fine strand of nape hair and check the result. If you’d like to see that colour every day in the mirror, just go for it!

Always (repeated 3 times) choose a new colour based on your skin tone
Your new hair colour must complement your skin tone 100% otherwise it will look completely wrong.

Remember there are 3 skin tones: cool (red, pink or bluish undertones), warm (golden, peach or yellowish undertones) and neutral (a mix of the two). Once you have established your skin tone, choosing the ideal hair colour will be an easy task.

Cool tones look amazing with anything from ash and platinum blonde to chestnut (with reddish accents), dark brown and even black. Warm tones are flattered by yummy shades of honey, strawberry and caramel blonde or chocolate brown. If your skin has neutral tones (well, aren’t you a lucky one?) you will look amazing with almost any colour!

Don’t try to change your colour drastically in one go…
…especially if you are performing the colouring session at home, on your own. It's better to take baby steps (especially when lightening hair) and make change your hair colour two tones at a time.

If you really can’t wait for the colour you want, then make an appointment with a hair pro. They can really do miracled you're probably going to need at least a trim anyway!

When going for a dramatic change, you'll be wanting a perfect, fresh and vibrant shade - this can’t be achieved without sacrificing a bit of length. The tips of your hair always have a different colour than the roots (for example they might be holding on to some old colour).  If you want perfection allow your stylist to chop and trim. Don’t worry, it always grows back!

Hoping you found these tips useful, I am looking forward to your own little secrets regarding drastic hair colour changes! Care to share?

I'm thinking of putting purple foils in my hair this winter. Though I must confess I can't decide if my skin tone is cool or neutral.

Oh the horrors of colour in the hands of someone way too young. I have had one or two unfortunate results in my day. I have learned (with age) to leave this to the experts

I have never been that brave to fully change my hair color, thanks heaps for the tips, I shall remember them when I eventually do go all out and adventurous.

I hadn't noticed this until now but I always tend to change my hair colour with each half year, so two seasons. Actually occasionally every season. I'm thinking a nice chocolate brown would be nice for me this winter.

I always consult with my hairdresser when deciding what to do colour-wise... it is very important to have a good relationship with them and for them to know what works well for you.

Great timing for this article! I cut about 12cm off my hair recently so now it's a asymmetrical bob but now I'm thinking of going even shorter and much much lighter. Thank you for more motivation :-) x

Argh…I can totally relate to the difficulties of going lighter when you have opted for a dark hair colour. I decided in my early twenties that I would dye my hair black (it's naturally light brown/blonde). I have a cool skin tone so it actually really suited me and I kept it this way for about 5 years. But when I decided it was time for a change and I wanted to return to something more 'natural' - it was such a nightmare! Stripping, bleaching and many 'in between' colors later I am now back to a brown-blonde ombre and loving it. I would definitely recommend thinking twice about going dark, especially if it's a bit of a whim - great advice BR!

I haven't ever dyed my hair, except have put red, brown and maroon henna in it. But that more of a tint which didn't show up much in my black brown hair. I don't have the funds to dye my hair regularly so I don't. Luckily my hair color suits me and it my hair is fairly healthy. I have had a sister who dyed her hair a number of times and it was applied wrong and left her with an orange halo at her roots and the dye also ruined her hair. Luckily her hair grows fast so it wasn't damaged for too long. One tip that I do recommend is to leave your hair unwashed for at least a day before dyeing as the natural hair oils mix with the pigment and help it to stick better.

Yay! I love my dramatic change and am having heaps of fun with it. This is some great advice though :)

I'm with you RachelM. Costs so much money with greys coming through. I have long, dark hair as well! Not brave enough to change drastically.

Wow what an awesome article. I've always wondered whether I was choosing the right colours based on my skin tone and yay, I've been doing it right all this time. Phew. Need to go and re-do my hair as my grey hairs are coming through. The joys of having grey hair at 31, grrrr.

Im all for drastic hair changes, macadamia hair masque has helped me change my hair colour safely, Black is always my go to colour or brights but at the moment ive been medium brown for a while, I have the urge to go black in the colder months to come :)
